But if you want the easiest least pain method of using MSOffice, then spend a
bit of money and buy Codeweavers Office. It is a version of Wine optimised
for Office applications with a very nice installer, and support if you have
 problems.

The version of Wine that comes included with Mdk 9.0 runs only a
crippled version of MS Word - you may not find it adequate. Probably
Codeweavers paid software is much better.

I should also have added that OpenOffice will read and write Word documents
perfectly well. Why use Word at all?

Dunno if it works with wine, should though from what I've heard.

Trillian is supported by the latest version of the Codeweavers Crossover
plugin. The Codeweavers installer will set it up for you. It works real
good...

If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of Linux altenatives
to Messenger. The one that comes to mind is EveryBuddy,
which I used to use very successfully. But that was a while
ago, so YMMV.

Re: [newbie] How to use WINE?

2001-03-19 Thread AndyMonks
this took me a while to figure out. at the moment wine is not at version 1.
so it still can't do much. version 1 will have an x interface. but if you
still want to use it:

wine is only a command line program. open a x termanal, and type:

wine /mnt/windows/windows/regedit.exe

this will run regedit. where the second part is the loctaion.
go to www.winehq.com to see a database of programs that will run.

type (without the quotes) wine "package name" at a command prompt. Make
sure you are in the directory in which the package is located.
