  Have you tried

  ln -s /dev/ttySHSF0 /dev/modem

then use /dev/modem in kppp, this is what I do in similar circumstances.

The modem is linked to /dev/modem - so when you're in KPPP (or whatever)
you can just set the device as that - and then test it. I've got
basically the same modem, but refuse to use KPPP anymore - I use WVDIAL
(which someone pointed out is on the CD set somewhere) - it works
without a hitch, and you have direct access to edit the main
configuration file by hand if you so desire (/etc/wvdial.conf) - so
there's nothing hidden or mysterious about it's settings and setup.

Re: [newbie] Install modem in Mandrake

If your modem is a winmodem it won't work. Is your modem on COM1, 2 or 3
or 4? Find out the comport and link it to /dev/modem by typing
'ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem. ttyS0=COM1, ttyS1=COM2 etc. the best way of
testing is use kppp and select the proper comport (ttyS0 etc.) and trying
to dial, if it dials it works.

As fo the sound card. I had to compile support for my SB16 in the kernel
with 'make xconfig' in /usr/src/linux.
