[newbie] kapm-idled
Hello i just finished configuring a new desktop machine and a samba, print, nfs, server, gateway (weeew). On the desktop machine (athlon 1333 ddrram etc.) running Mandrake 8.1 with kde 2.2.2 and a kernell 2.4.13, i suddenly realised the a prozess called kapm-idled uses between 15 and 40% of my cpu allthetime! What can i do about it does that have something to do with apm ? I dissabled that in drakxservices but still kapm-idled continues lurking through my system. Give me a hint im damn tired that was like 10 hours configs i got behind=). Thanx Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi Don't worry about it -- it's a process that keeps track of idle CPU time. Ok thanks now i got it (pheew) now i can go to sleep and dream of penguins =). Good concept actually nice work linus! Not quite its actually the kernels advanced power management process. What normally happens when your machine is idle, has nothing to do, it will execute a special no-op instruction which, as the name suggests does nothing at all except to keep the machine ticking over. Now what the kapm-idle process does is it runs whenever the machine is idle and replaces these no-ops with a special instruction to cause the processor to shutdown some parts to conserve power, and also as a side effect reduce heat output. Cool huh! I'm using Mandrake 8.1 with 2.4.13-12mdk All recent kernels have this option. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Just noticed this myself, taking up 40% cpu and caused the desktop to be very slow. I was running a gnome program just before. I had to log out and log back in. Re: [newbie] kapm-idled
i don't think you need to worry, the moment you run something else kapm-idled just 'gives way' and releases cpu cycles, i don't know it's for exactly but i've read that it just uses up 'spare' cycles, i guess it is to do with power managment and being idle bascule On Friday 26 October 2001 4:06 pm, you wrote: How do I kill it? It uses 50%+ of cpu (or that what top and kpm say) I read i have to recompile the kernel but, is there any easier way? I also add append=apm=off to /etc/lilo.conf, but now i have to manually shutdown the system... eerr that`s not the idea. Thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] kapm-idled?
It's been done to death loads of times. The overall result is don't worry about it, it's an idle task which soaks up unused cycles for accounting purposes. It's not really using ANY of your processor cycles. Look at the output from 'top' in a console. Check out the CPU utilisation figures at the top of the display. See? However, as soon as I move the mouse or do any real work and stop, the CPU usage is flat for a bit then kapm-idle kicks in. we have answered this so many times, you know we should come up with a better answer, something with a little humour, kinda like the unsub fee for folks trying to unsub on list. Re: [newbie] kapm-idled?
it is a measurement of the IDLED (as in not running, sitting still) CPU for the reading of AdvancedPowerMangagment. and is not an illusion, it is required for Mandrake8.0+ On Saturday 22 September 2001 01:19, you wrote: On Fri, 21 Sep 2001, s wrote: On Friday 21 September 2001 10:46 pm, Manuel Drake wrote: What the heck is this and why is it always sucking so much of my CPU? [newbie] kapm-idled - what is it why does it chew up my CPU?
I just upgraded from Mandrake 7.1 to 8.0 a few days ago. I notice that when the system is otherwise idle a process calling itself kapm-idled runs, consuming 75-80% of the CPU. Top shows its size as 0. What is it? Thanks, -- Skip Montanaro ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (847)971-7098

Thanks, It isn't chewing up your CPU--it measures idle cycles for some other routines that try to calculate Load and such. Probably we will modify the top and other measurement programs so you cannot see it. Again those are the TOTAL IDLE CYCLES being shown. Civileme
[newbie] kapm-idled, 8.0, can't rebuild kernel, locking up.
what is this kapm-idled thing and why can I not kill it? Why can I not disable it? Why is it absolutely there against my will? It takes up between 50 and 100% of my cpu on all monitoring progs making them USELESS and eventually causes my system to lock and crash. I uninstalled ALL kde packages since I don't particularly like kde and still there is kapm-idled mocking me. How can I make this go away? Oh yea, the system kernel panicks off of ANY newly built kernel and in most cases is actually unable to complete rebuilding a kernel. So don't tell me all I need to do is uncheck a box in make xconfig and recompile. I've read the kernel devel mailing lists and the mandrake expert lists in regards to this. "Just rebuild your kernel" is not an option on a system that is incapable of rebuilding a kernel if you use any of the default install options. I'm really pissed off about 8.0 right now. It's a lot faster then 7.2 when it works but hardly anything that I do with linux works in 8.0. I did an expert install and installed everything (20 gig HD the whole disk got installed) and I still had to hunt down extra packages just so I could rebuild RPMs. WTF is that? Then the kapm-idled thing starts up and my system starts locking up. ug. Why did all the install options go away? Does it have to be only "Expert" or "I'm an idiot" options? "I'm an idiot" won't even let me name a partition anything but what is in the drop down box. WTF is that? Why is the "Expert" install basically the normal install from 7.2? Anyway, if anyone can help with my questions I appreciate it and if anyone actually read this whole email I congratulate you on your perseverence. Sorry to bitch so much but I traded a functioning mandrake 7.2 for a worthless 8.0 today and I'm pissed off about it. I've been working on this for almost 12 hours now. Abe = Jesus saves.
