Wael:
You have a winmodem. If you are unfamiliar with the term, winmodems are not
real modems, but rely on software drivers. They are intended to work with
Windows, but people have developed ways to make them run under Linux. The
best source of information is:
http://linmodems.org
You may also find useful information in the newbie archives, as this is a
common question.

BTW, the newer versions of Mandrake are able to recognize and configure _some_
winmodems automagically, so you should consider installing 9.1 (or 9.2).

Re: [newbie] Modem Install Hassles

Mark Shaw wrote:
There aren't any jumpers of any kind on the card.

I think I've almost got this working. What I did was to
move the card from PCI slot 4 to slot 2, and reset the BIOS
to allow it to choose the IRQ. (The PnP-aware OS switch in
my BIOS is, and has always been, set to no.)

Interestingly enough, the BIOS chose IRQ10 for the modem,
which is what I had it last manually set to when it was in
slot 4. But now the OS sees it, and I can actually dial a
 number with kppp!

But then I get an error telling me that the ppp daemon shut
down prematurely, or something like that (it was late).
I'm further down the road, though. I'll just have to poke
at it some more, I hope

 Thanks!

 Mark Shaw

Markcheck and see if the option 'noauth' is in your
/etc/ppp/options file. If not, add it on it's own line and
see if that helps your problem.

[newbie] Modem Install Hassles

2001-05-05 Thread lee

Hi Mark,

I just went down the road you're on,here's what I did. I have a zoom isa
modem. Of course you have disabled pnp in the bios, and I know you have the
jumpers on the card set to non-pnp as well. I put the modem on com 3( as set
by the jumpers on the modem). I have reserved irq 5 for the modem.
Now you can use minicom to initialize the modem. The big thing for me was to
make sure pnp is disabled on the modem as well. Check your install cd for the
modem if you need further directions.
Hope this helps a bit, if not fire back a response and we'll go from there.
Good luck and hava nice wknd :)

How did you check before purchasing? A couple of others on the list have
claimed that this is a "confirmed" winmodem. I hope you're right and they're
wrong.
Anyway, you can give this a try:
The modem can probably be configured using kppp (assuming you're using
KDE). It's on the menu. You'll need to know which COM port it's on. If it's
on COM2, for example, choose ttyS1; COM1, choose ttyS0. Then query the modem
to see if it's being recognized.
If you're not using KDE and do not have kppp, I'm not sure. Perhpas someone
else will jump in.

Re: [newbie] modem install

1999-11-16 Thread M Thompson

Take it back and get a USR fax/modem that's not labeled "PCI" or "winmodem."
Sorry to be so blunt, by I would rather let my CPU do other things than
run my modem.

I love my 3COM/USR V.Everything 56K Internal modem. It took me 5 minutes to
install it and make it work with LINUX. The 3COM manual has 1 page devoted
to LINUX. I followed the instructions, intalled the modem, and loaded KPPP
under LINUX. It worked first time...I just set KPPP to use /dev/ttsy1
(ttsy1 since I set the jumper on the modem to COM2). The V.Everything works
great with Win95OSR2, NT4, and LINUX.

Check out http://www.pricewatch.com or http://www.shopper.com for the best
prices out there.

If your patient, which I'm not, you could check out http://www.linmodems.org
and see if there is any progress on this topic.

The vast majority of PCI 56k modems are "WinModems" and as
such are unuseable under Linux. If you want to be
absolutely sure that your 56k modem will work under Linux,
take that one back and purchase an external modem that
hooks into a serial port.

Then, if it's listed as "OK" please come back and ask us
again. At this point, I'm still saying EVERY *PCI* modem is
a WinModem (I know...there are a couple exceptions to the
rule, but I'm just using the old "rule of thumb.")

Even if your modem is NOT listed, it does not mean it's not
a WinModem. Does the box state "Works in Windows 95 98"?
Or does it say something more like "works in DOS and
Windows" ???

It's true that USR doesn't exist as a separate company since they were
absorbed by 3Com, however, they still sell modems under the USR Brand name.
All external modems are serial modems. Their ISA internal modems are not
Winmodems unless labled such. I believe them may make ONE PCI modem that is
not a Winmodem, but am not sure on that one.

I have a USR 56k modem that is not a winmodem and works fine under Linux. It
is not a PCI card. You have to read the box VERY CAREFULLY and make sure
that the modem inside it is not a winmodem. The other thing is that the
non-winmodems usually cost more.
