Re: [newbie] monitor setting problem. Helphelphelp

On Sun, 20 Jun 1999, Steve translated thoughts to electrons:
 Hola Jose,
le agradezco mucho por su respuesta. Cambie el "setting" (how do you
say setting in Spanish?) al 1024, etc., y asi corregi el problema.
By the way, I sometimes get that affect very mildly when my
refrigerator is powered up. It is about 20 feet from my computer.

Q'onda Compadre...
The Fridge and the monitor both generate static electricity... if you dont like
this side effect (usually only happens when the Fridge starts, and then it
slowly fades), get one of those monitor screens (designed to protect you eyes)
that also have like a small cable with a pin.
Attach this pin to something fairly large and metal (like your computers outer
casing) and the static electricity will dissipate safely and easily.

I have one more question: I was messing around with the desktop and I
pushed some icon and GNOME icons overlaid the KDE icons on my desktop.
GNOME did not replace KDE but rather is sitting there with KDE. Along
the top task bar are buttons labled "gnc", "gnc2" hasta "gnc8"
Any suggestions how I can remedy this?

Sorry... cant help you here. : (

1999-06-19 Thread Anonymous

On Sat, 19 Jun 1999, Steve translated thoughts to electrons:

On the Mandrake 6.0 gui, the desktop ripples. Waves seem to be moving
from the upper righthand corner to the lower left hand corner. I don't
see the same thing on this monitor screen when I switch over to Win95.
 Have I set something wrong?
This is a Sony Multiscan 200ES, 17". Vertical scan range is 50-120Hz,
 horizontal scan range is 30-70khz.
Maximum resolution is 1280x1024@60hz or 1024x768@85hz/
In Xconfigurator, I found a Sony CDT 200es and picked that. Later,
after the waves started, I went back to Xconfigurator and selected the
 custom option. I entered
 the values given above.
What should I do? Any ideas?

This is a visual effect called 'moire', and is well known (and hated) by us at
the publishing industry. It is caused by a misaligning of the dot arrays on the
scanned picture (your background), and the dot array in your monitor.

If your background is a scanned image, this is almost impossible to correct,
try to get another image scan.

But if this is with all of the image, my suggestion would be that you try to
use a slightly worse value to your monitor, like 1024x768 at 60hz and tell us
what happens. Usually the difference is very hard to notice on a standard
machine that uses standard graphics works (ie. good enough for web-quality
graphics and standard printing jobs, although maybe not good enough for
profesional publishing-industry work)
