Re: [newbie] new sound card suggestions ??

1999-08-24 Thread Martin White

Glad to hear the instructions were of help !!

A BIG word of warning though - consider carefully if the kernel upgrade will
actually give you anything extra that you REALLY need or fix any problems
that you REALLY need fixing. I recently learnt my first painful lesson in
the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' way of thinking.

I upgraded to the 2.2.9-27mdk kernel - simply because i thought it would be
nice to try the latest (that was when it was the latest from Mandrake !!).
All of a sudden my SBLive stopped working. So i went back down to my
previous kernel (and yes i did remember to do all the stuff with LILO), and
it still didn't work. To cut a very long stroy short, i had to do a complete
re-install to get things back to a working state.

As i mentioned in another post yesterday, my kernel upgrade was a pointless
excercise - no extra functionality, simply security fixes. My box is only
ever connected to my laptop - never anything like the net as i don't have a
modem in it. I beleive i don't pose much of a security threat to myself, so
all i did was cause myself a lot of work !!

Just my thoughts.
Martin.

I don't really agree with this. The SBLive is a blinding card, and it just
depends on your requirements. I mainly (still) use Windows for gaming, which
lets face it is the only place where I personally need the SBLive's
capabilities (i refer to the SBLive Value when i talk about the SBLive too).
Lets be fair here, the cards aren't ready for Windows without obtaining the
whole host of upgrades from creative either !!

The sound card works admirably under Linux, installs easily (despite plenty
of emails asking for help - the solution is dead easy), and allows me to get
system sounds under X, play my CD's, listen to MP3s, and use the Mixer.

OK, so what is the dead easy solution

OK, so I've picked up a PCI512. Pulled the plug and installed the card (why do
these things come with covers anyway?) had three minutes and tried a quick and
dirty sndconfig from linux 1. Well it couldn't find the card so i tried a
couple of SB examples and nuttin' honey. Now the modem doesn't work (connects
but won't access any site - arghhh). I recall someone posting a couple of files
that needed to be edited but i don't recall which or what to edit. Any help ??
Don't really feel like reinstalling this just because i can't fix it with a
simple edit. Also still looking for some help with update / install of the
 proper SB files.

Think PCI512 = Live!

With this in mind, Creative isn't being very supportive of Linux for their
Live! series of sound cards.

Their ISA sound cards plus the PCI64/PCI128 should work okay in Linux.

IF the card is deemed to be an SBLive or SBLive Value, then i can help out,
and will send further details on request. If it is under the category 'Sound

absolutely no experience of these cards whatsoever. I did a little hunting

My install is still on kernel 2.2.9-19mdk, so the directories in the

If you've done that, i'll assume you know enough to just follow the
following...

http://www/whitem.demon.co.uk/sblive.htm

The file referred to from Creative's site is 'emu10k1-0.3b.tar.gz'.

The instructions were in response to a previous post when the latest version
of the driver came out. So far no-one has told me anything to the contrary,
so i assume they work (i have given the URL out quite a few times now).

If they don't, can someone tell me why and i'll try and correct the

they do!!). Obviously if resources are conflicting with modems and stuff,
that might be a different matter altogether. Give it a go and let me know

The PCI16 is a rebadged Ensonique (from what I saw when we were selling
them). To me it seems as though Creative bought Ensonique as they were
falling behind in the PCI sound card race, needed to get one released.

I have the SB Live! (full, not value). The only small problem I have is
that the Creative modules only support 2.2.5 2.2.10 AFAIR. I have
checked the Linux-Mandrake site, but they do not have 2.2.10 listed as
an upgrade kernel version. I have copy of the full 2.2.10 kernel source
curtsey of PC Plus. Can I use this to upgrade/replace the version
supplied with Linux-Mandrake PowerPack? I used to run RH6 (for two
weeks) had my SB Live! running under that, so I know it works. Any
guidance on upgrading to kernel version 2.2.10? I know that there is a
2.2.11 version now available, but I need 2.2.10
