I have done exactly what you mention already actually. Its very strange, I can install redhat 5.2 fine, but I can't install Mandrake 7.0, it cannot find available partitions. redhat finds them find ??? The install hangs when it comes to the partitioning sectiona nd says that "it can find no available partitions", I know this is false, I have 1 GB partition with nothing on it. You could fdisk the partition and leave it as free space.
