[newbie] rpmdrake not working
Hi! I'm having trouble with rpmdrake, when I try to urpmi packages, the program hangs and when I try and install packages from graphical interface it seems to take forever, although they do eventually install. Can anyone explain the reason for this slowness? And tell me what I need to do to correct it. Please cc me a copy of email reply to my home address.. thanks in advance Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

It's just general slowness of public mirror servers, for which there is no cure; Mandrake 9.0 and Red Hat 8.0 being issued within a week of one another has led to machines all round the world being reduced to iron filings as the CD images download ... slowly ;) An enhancement I'll suggest for 9.1 is that you can specify a server- specific timeout (if the server doesn't respond within N seconds, go on to the next server to get details from) as this timeout is, evidently, hardwired. To see what actually happens without the GUI hiding the details use the command line (as root): urpmi.update -a (to update all package lists from all servers); urpmi.update server (to update the package list from server server); urpmi --auto-select (to update all packages which are updateable). Re: [newbie] rpmdrake not working
I have two machines. The home server (AMD-K6-2/450) runc 8.2 currently without any problem. Installing 9.0 RPMDRAKE spends infinit time with nothing, just blocking the CD ROM. On the other machine PIII/TUALATIM, 1GHz slightly better but still slow and nearly unusable. - Original Message - From: Derek Jennings [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 12:23 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] rpmdrake not working On Thursday 03 Oct 2002 10:58 am, Dale Morris wrote: Hi! Please cc me a copy of email reply to my home address.. thanks in advance You do not say if you are using 8.2 or 9.0 ? I think the new rpmdrake in 9.0 is a backwards step. It is less useful and less robust than the old one. However the good news is that the command line urpmi command seems to be better than in 8.2, and I am finding software installation from the command line to be quite easy. You also get more information than with the GUI. For example your delays are almost certainly due to a slow mirror you are using. You would see that in the command line because you get to see the log in dialogue, as well as download progress. For a short guide in using urpmi at the command line check out http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=3460mod e=order=0thold=0 One thing missing from the new rpmdrake is a way of listing files in a package. You can do this at the command line with urpmf package For a fast mirror try ftp://ftp.rediris.es/pub/linux/distributions/ etc It is a Spanish mirror and gives lightning fast responses so do not let anyone know about it. When you consider that 9.0 is only recently released and that RH 8.0 was released on Tues. you are lucky that you can connect to a sever at all. Dl speeds on all servers, at least for the next couple of days will be slow but should return to normal there after. Charles Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
