I can enthusiastically recommend the Epson 1200U, a USB scanner that
works well with SANE and gives great scans. This scanner is
easy to get working in Linux. As a general rule, Epsons are known for
being easy to set up in Linux. You should still check the SANE page to
make sure you have a model that is known to work.

Dear Kal,

Thank you for your info. I will check into HP's also. I thought I would only
go with Epson however I may change my mind. Thanks.

Well Marcia, I don't know about scanners, but I own a HP 930c printer.
It performs fine, is (relatively) silent and prints beautyful photos on
photopaper. I use the CUPS printing system in LM 8.1. Another reason to
choose a HP-printer is that Hewlett-Packard supports linux and supply
their own drivers for linux, free to download (in case you don't want to
use CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)).

Hi Marcia,

You may want to check out the SANE site, http://www.mostang.com/sane/ to

 Dear All,

I am planning to buy a scanner and a printer within the next few
 days and I
want to make sure that I get a low-priced, easy to setup with LM8.1, and
non-USB, scanner and printer. I am planning on an Epson printer
 or HP. Does
anyone know what non-USB HP color printer works well with LM 8.1
 and makes
 beautiful photographs?

Does anyone know what scanners that are not USB work well with
 LM8.1? I see
alot of Mustek in the stores where I am at. Which models if any
 are good with
 Linux?

Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you,

 Marcia

Most decent SCSI scanners will do. I have a simple Mustek scanner and
that performs great (once i have the color settings figured out.)

Paul,
How did you get yours to work. Sane is installed, but I have yet to
get it going. It does not recognize it as a device, and I am having
trouble. Can you shed some light? Thanks

In fact there was very little to it.
1. Make sure your scanner is turned on when booting, so the scsi card
reports the scanner when it is initialized.
2. run xscanimage. That is what did all the work for me. It detected a
scanner, asked me if I own a Mustek scanner, I said yes, and then
xscanimage told me to scan away.

That's all I did, so far all I can tell you. Hope this helps a little

[newbie] Scanners

I need to get a new scanner, one that will work with my Linux.
Any of y'all have an HP 3200 up and running with Linux. It wasn't listed on the
Sane site, but it's the right price and easily available for me.

Or, any recommendations from someone using a scanner under $200?

THANKS!

I think you should use a regular user account on your linux to be running on
the internet and stuff for good reason's as I'm sure others would agree with
 me...

Oh, I agree, but if you insist on browsing/emailing as 'root`, at least
change the identity under "mail and newsgroups" in Nutscrape preferences
or similar in whatever email client you're using,
so it won't make it SO obvious.

[newbie] Scanners

I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner. I don't know how to configure
it in Linux. Star Office says it need SANE in order to work. How do I
implement SANE? Or will this Scanner even work with Mandrake-Linux 6.0?
Its a parallel port scanner.

I have the same scanner and last time I was at the SANE site, they
 didn't support this.
 Unless I missed something, I don't think it's there.

Scanning is the ONLY thing I need Win95 for anymore.

Everything else, I do in Linux, better and faster!

 Alan

I found the sane site and you are right its not listed. Thanks for the
response. Hopefully there will come some drivers for the scanner, or I
will just have to get one that is compatible I guess.

Mandrake includes Mandrake-SOHO (Small Office Home Office) package
which includes SANE 1.0 (scanning plugin for Gimp)

...and If you check the SANE site, Mustek scanners are supported:
