Hi Ricardo,

First of all, welcome to webcam hell. I'm kidding - but the biggest problem
you will have is with hardware. Mandrake has a compatability page listing
various hardware.

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3

Then, if you decide to go with gnome meeting, you will need to install
video4linux at the backend.

The webcam I have is not compatible and I couldn't be bothered getting another
so I fell at the first hurdle - but I imagine if you get a compatible camera
you'll be fine.

Hi,

I have a Logitech quickcam pro. I spent a fair bit of time and effort trying
to get it to work on Mandrake 10.0, and failed miserably...
Mandrake 10.1 auto detected it, installed Gnome meeting, and it all just
happened!

Checking the Hardware compatibility list sounds like a good idea...

[newbie] webcam recommendations needed

2003-10-07 Thread Damian Gatabria

Hi.

Yesterday i started working at a small business that
is interested in using PC's with webcams as security
cameras .. you know, to monitor customers, that kind
of thing.

The idea is that the PC should be running Linux. I
have zero experience with webcams, and from
what i've read, performance and resolution can be real
problems as drivers vary in quality.

So, is there any brand or model that could be useful
for this (resolution should be good enough to
make it possible to recognize a face standing at about
3 or 4 meters from the camera) under Linux?

Thanks

Damian

Hi Damian - I'm using a Logitech Pro 3000 (Quickcam) that works pretty good
under Linux/Mandrake.

I'm not sure if its still made though.

I'll send you a snapshot taken with it using Camstream - its not 9 - 12 feet,
(more like 3) but it should give you an idea of the quality.

I am using the el-cheapo camera that came with the HP-pavilion
and it works fine a better camera say in the 30 to 50 $4 range should be
awesome.

Logitech 3000 Pro or 4000 Pro works easily with the built in pwc
module. Picture quality is very nice.

Lots of helpful information here:
http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/

The above site covers Philips plus the various other cams that use the
pwc module.

[newbie] Webcam won't connect to remote host.

2002-12-13 Thread Brian Trainor
Hello again, and thanks go out to Nikunj for the help yesterday.

So, I got the whole thing installed now, and now I get all new fun. I'm
trying to get webcam to connect to a remote host via SSH and I believe I have
the config set up right, but it gives me a broken pipe error every time I try
to connect. Here's what I get when I flag the config for debug mode:
excess crap deleted
ssh config [ftp]:
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]@namegoeshere.com:/directory/stuff
   what.jpg = image.jpg
webcam 2002-12-13 23:27:20
ssh: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Name or service not known
Broken pipe

For even more fun, I decided to try this in FTP mode, here are my results:

[ftp] ftp
[ftp] pass
[ftp] pass
[ftp] Passive mode off.
[ftp] ftp
[ftp] close
[ftp] close
[ftp] Not connected.
ftp: lost connection
[ftp] ftp
[ftp] open ftp.namegoeshere.com
[ftp] open ftp.namegoeshere.com
[ftp] Connected to ftp.namegoeshere.com
[ftp] 220 ProFTPD FTP Server ready
[ftp] 500 AUTH not understood.
[ftp] 500 AUTH not understood.
[ftp] KERBEROS_V4 rejected as an authentication type
[ftp] ftp
ftp: connect failed, sleeping 5 sec

Basically just scrolls that. with increments of sleep time going up each time.
When I try to connect via SSH or FTP from the command line I don't have any
problems. What did I screw up this time?
TIA
Brian

I don't know how this fits into the picture, but I had a similar
experience with webcam. There was a time when it would ftp with no
problem. Then for no apparent reason it began doing what you describe
above. Ultimately what I did was have webcam save the images to a local
file, and I had cron run a script that would upload the file using
ncftp. Why this was necessary I never figured out, but it worked quite
well.

Nowadays I use camstream to capture and upload my webcam shots, and I am
very happy with it.

Well, if it has the Cpia chipset or a clone of the OLD logitech
quickcam, it is supported by the kernel and there are many progs. You
might also try the v4l2 people, as they might be working on it if its not
one those chipsets. I tried searching for the webcam, but can't seem to be
able to get info on it. Can you send more specs on it? I will be happy to
give you all the different links for the webcam projects and programs if
you want.

By the way ICUII is video camera utility and application that you can
