Well, I really just wanted to get into the BIOS to poke around, and this
whole thing just went crazy, I can't believe how many responses I got to
this thread! But I now have one pain in the ass Win98 box to send off to
mother of wife of brother-in-law, and one identical box (compaq
deskcrud, P200, 192 MB RAM) with Mandrake 9.1 to hack to bits. Maybe
it'll end up as my web/mail/file/print server if it behaves...

I never did get it to do a network install of MDK...who knows what the
hell that was about.

I still think CG's recommendation for the compaq is most realistic!

  You're screwed.

I resemble that remark!

Apparently, even you do get into the BIOS, from what I've read, there's
 not much to do anyway.

Whadda ya mean? Setting the boot order isn't enough for you?

 Good ole Compaq.

It'll make a good test machine, though. If it'll work on this piece of
 shite, it'll work on anything!

Yeah, i'll never get one of these again. (this wasn't free, but was cheap)
It worked (as good as anything else) with windows, but it seems these things were
designed specifically for windows...

Now that was helpful Joe!

Try using the F10 or F12 key when you see a blinking cursor, probably in the upper
right-nad corner.
It will only flash for about 3 to 4 seconds maximum so you have to be fast! On older
systems Compaq
used to use different hotkeys to enter the BIOS.
