RE: [newbie] package downloads need conversion?

Just so
you know, I dont believe that the DHCPD is what you need if you are trying to
configure it as a client. Dhcpd is the daemon which provides the service to
others. If you are not trying to make a dhcp server, I wouldnt recommend that
you install this package. If you go into linuxconf network settings
defaults, and remove EVERYTHING (ip settings, gateways, dns, etc.) except the driver
for your network card, and then choose the option of DHCP or (automatically
configure) this should work it is mandatory that there be absolutely no ips
of any kind entered for the eth0 device give that a whirl I say!

Subject: [newbie] package
downloads need conversion?

Hi
everybody,

I'm
trying to get my Mandrake 8.0 system online and need to install dhcpcd or pump
as a dhcp client. Can I download these packages on a Windows box and
install them straight on my Linux box or do I have to convert them into a Linux
compatible format?

Any
advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Matthias

Can't you just install them from the software manager since they're (should
be) on the download disks? Or ( I find this easier) run through the install
again selecting upgrade installing (add packages? I don't remember) only
the packages (the dhcpd, pump, whatever) you need, then let it configure the
network when you get to that step? Or have you tried that and it didn't work?

Don't know, but that should work.

just
run rpmdrake and tick the search box.. enter dhcp and you will find all you want
and more..

then
just edit your settings to suit...

but if
you download them as rpm's in windows, and transfer them to a linux accessable
partition, then yes. you can install them.
