What are you running, KDE? Enlightenment? Each one has different places to
disable the virtual desktop settings. As far as the monitor goes, run
Xconfigurator from a terminal and you should be able to set things up there.
Make sure you manually pick your resolution and color settings though. I
have it done it lately but I know it always defaulted to something that I
didn't want. Hope this helps.

Subject: [newbie] virtual desktop and riva128 probs
Hello,
I got a PIII-500, 96M RAM, and a RIVA128. First off, how do I get rid of
the
virtual desktop option? You know, when you can have windows that overlap
the
edge of your screen. I remember an option when I installed it in the Xwin
configuration part, but I can't find it in any of the configuration
options
now. Will I have to reload just to get rid of it?.blarg...
Secondly, I am having problems with switching resolutions. I'm set right
now
at 32 bit color, 640x480, with the monitor set to whatever the closest one
is. This setup works fine for now, but eats up desktop space. I've tried
switching the monitor settings but it doesn't matter, no dice. Also, how
'bout changing the refresh rate?I can tell mine needs to be bumped up,
but can't figure out how
Thanks in advance,
Mario
