Re: [newbie] share the DSL more

The notebook has an NIC connected to DSL internet ( no DSL modem just an Rj45 running from the NIC to the wall , with an internal IP 10.x.x.x then connects to the internet through the ISP's router in the building) I want to be able to do the following: 1- I want the notebook to be running Linux all the time, the PC running win ( most of the time ) 2- Connect the PC and the notebook through a LAN, so I can see files both ways ( see win files from linux and vice versa ) . 3- Use the printer from both machines. 4- access the internet from both machines. Now, I have read some articles here and there ( IP masquerading, setting up Linux/Win LANs, SAMBA... ) yet I'm not sure which I need to do first, which I dont need to do at all , and ofcourse after reading a typical HOWTO I ended up more confused than before I read it !!! can anybody who feels like helping, give me an outline of what shall I do here ?? ANY suggestion will be most appreciated. -- Hanan - Hanan AL-Shargi Hi, you didn't say which version you are running, 8.1 or 8.0 or other. Anyway, in 8.1 when using wizdrake it always needs to have the network set up first. So you need both computers running on the network and able to surf the internet or what ever. Then set up Samba and with that you should be able to use printers and share files. I use komba2 to do that anymore but it isn't necessary to have running. It is like linneighborhood or windows explorer. HTH -- Dennis M. registered linux user # 180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://wwwmandrakestorecom

Re:[newbie] share the DSL more
Gerald, do you mean this: run both machins in linux set up a lan between them, then switch both to win and do the same. okay then what happens after that ? i mean when i switch one of them back to linux will they be able to see each other form that point ? or there is something else to set. ? - Hanan AL-Shargi Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? That is another way to look at it, byt yes, I think you have it correct.
