g, sorry, i didn't have your e-mail address and i had lost the other thread
when i formatted / and reinstalled. kmail all got lost, even though i tried
to back it up on a windows partition. oh well, back in business now!

it's a philips cd-rw drive, model CDD4801/81, it's manufacture date is listed
as april 2000, that's physically on the drive, checked today. also found out
today that it's meant as an OEM drive for a prebuilt, like a dell or gateway
or whatever. of course, i'm not on a prebuilt, i've spent about as much as i
would've on a prebuilt and got something that'd kick a prebuilt's you know
what (well, once i get the soundblaster LIVE 5.1 card my friend is sending
me, freebies are great!)
the major issuesi can load a music CD in, go to KsCD and play it and have
full control over it. my guess would be that's because the sound is
outputting straight to the sound card (because i remembered to hook the cable
up for that) and there's minimal control that needs to be done from the
user end at that point, but that's just a guess.
a CD burn was attempted, but it aborted on track 4 of 13. it could be a bad
track, not everything was fully written, but it did not complete and the disc
reads as if there's nothing on it. upon loading a data CD though, when i try
to access it either with the icon on the desktop or through kwikdisc, the
computer goes into kernal panic and locks up. i have not tried again through
a command line since i formatted and reinstalled, but it was doing the same
thing when i was trying before (and i can't remember the exact commands i was
using, sorry).

now, when i open a terminal and run
cd /mnt
dir
i get
'cdrom floppy scd0 win_c win_c2 win_d win_e win_f win_g'
throw mdk9.1 install disc 3 into the drive
cd cdrom
dir
all i get is [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdrom]$
so then i try
cd scd0
and it tells me there's no such file or directory. so i 'cd /mnt' and 'dir'
again, then 'cd scd0' followed by 'dir' and all i get is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
scd0]$
THENi noticed this stuff while wandering around the directories
/dev/cdroms there's a hard disc icon named 'cdrom0'. right click properties
and it says points to ../scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd but that would point
it towards the primary ide channel, not the secondary, and the cd drive is on
the secondary channel..am i right saying it's trying to point to the primary
ide channel? that's a random stab in the dark for me, but that's a guess.
at least i'm trying to think!
in my bios, Ultra DMA mode is disabled for the cd-rw drive. i don't know if
my cd-rw drive supports UDMA, i have choices from 0-4 and disabled. that's
another guess for me...might be worthless info, i dunno.
ok, i think i've covered all basesi think...if there's more info needed,
lemme
