RE: [newbie] Ripping with Man. 8.2 ?

2002-06-18 Thread Barran, Richard

hello, i'm relatively new to linux but have been ripping awhile with
 windows.

i was wondering what programs (?) etc i would need to start
 doing this on
mandrake 8.2. i installed the workstation with multimedia. i
 would like
something that uses some sort of look-up if possible, rips as
 quickly as
possible, and encode at high compression 200+ kb/s. thanks

Hi,

LM8.2 comes with Grip. It's a GUI program designed for ripping audio CDs
into .WAVs, then encoding these into MP3s or OGGs.
However :-) it's not complete on its own. You'll also need a MP3 encoder.
Lame works ok, I got my copy from the Penguin Liberation Front website
http://plf.zarb.org/rpm2html/Sound.html. There are other encoders there too,
try them out and decide which one you like the most.

Grip will lookup track names for you, and has no limitation on encoding
bitrates.

On the downside, it doesn't seem to like reading from IDE CD-writers :-(
although I got it to work in the end. Somehow.

snip longest sig I've ever seen!

That's funny, cause I find that Grip doesn't like my dvd drive and I
have to use my IDE CD-Writer to rip from.

mmm, interesting.

 John...

If all else fails, the command line should work

cdparanoia -vB 1- /path/to-where-you-want-the/wav (s)

Both my burner and cdrom drives are IDE, I've never had any
problems.
