Re: [newbie] USR/3Com Sportster 005686-03 56k

I made a tiny change in the modem settings ... changed
it from 57600 to 38000 or therabouts ... and got
online.

I was happy to be surfing until I realized the
persistent symtom was there ... as with the internal
PCI hardware modem ... first session online for hour
and 20 ... then got message "operation times out
attemtpting to contact ..." second session, 45 minutes
then no surfing ... can disconnect reconnect just
fine, but it is not optimal obviously. Actually very
annoying, unacceptable, yada yada ..

Tried it with the 2nd of 3rd systems, so I know it's
not a system problem; it's clearly linuxmandrake (was
happening with redhat too) and this motherboard/modem
... The modem works fine under windows according to
the modem vendor, but on a different system (don't
know why I bothered with that test) The system vendor
claims that the PCI modem did not work on windows, but
another modem did work (who knows what these guys
really found out, I can't really watch over their
shoulders ... and they don't want to be responsible
for any of this).

I do wonder whether mandrake 9.1 will fix this problem
(also I was using the "core" mandrake 9.0, not the
boxed or cd version)

Have you double checked your user name and password settings in your
dialup connection? Perhaps a o instead of a 0 or a 1 instead of a i or l
upper case letter wher a lower case letter should be used, some ISPs are case
sensitive on login.
It sounds like everything is working fine up until the username and
password varification.
