[Newbie]Fatal error "no screens found" (video card SIS5513 ?)

Have recently installed redhat 7.2 overwriting Windows95 on my old home

Install went ok, however when running startx get the "no screens found"
fatal
server error. Have run Xconfigurator without success.

Attached are the xfree86 log and dmesg files.

Is my video card not supported ?

Any help would be gratefully received,

Could you go to the log /var/log/XFree86.0.log and post it as well as the XF86Config
(resp
XF86Config-4 if X is mixed up) which the log tells you it is using
by the way check the specs of your monitor just in case you are getting too high a
refresh rate...

[Newbie]XFree86-4.2.1

2002-10-27 Thread Brian Moore
	I have XFree86 4.2.1 installed in Red Hat 8.0.
I have a Hitachi CM751 monitor and Riva TNT2 M64 video card which will
support resolution of 1152 x 864 at a refresh of 100Hz.
This was easily achieved in every version of XFree86 prior to 4.1, but
4.2.1 will only allow a refresh of 85Hz.

I have installed the latest nVidia driver ( nVidia -1.0-3123 ), but still I
can find no way to increase the refresh rate. At 85Hz the screen is
narrowed, so I need to increase to 100Hz.
Could anyone please provide a sample XF86Config which shows how to add a
mode line to the config file and force the refresh up.
	Thanks, Brian.

[Newbie]Xinerama -- ATI Radeon 7500. Why not?

2002-10-27 Thread Adam Luter
Well my new ATI card seems to work great (I had had problems with the
first one I received not doing higher than 800x600 properly).

I managed to get my hands on a Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 17HX (analog
CRT, 17") display. That, with my CTX 17", I would like to have dual
head support.

However, my current attempts have only led the primary output to
display. The ATI card has one analog and one digital port, and I have
put a digital->analog convertor on the latter.

Regardless of which monitor I put as primary, the secondary one will
not display through X. I do not think is even -trying-. Looking at
the logs there are some hints that it knows I -want- to have two
displays, but no indication of -why- it doesn't go all the way and
give me just that.

I also noted that the display comes up on the primary without any
traces that there might be a second display there (such as the mouse
going off into some void on a side of the screen).

I'm running Debian (sid), with the pre-release 4.2 server packages.
I've searched and tried several variations on what others thought (and
even said) worked for the ATI card. But all of them do the exact same
thing (except for those suggesting to put 'Option "agpmode" 4', which
doesn't work at all).

Attached is my configuration file and my server log. You all helped
tremendously before in diagnoising my hardware failure -- I would
double in your debt for any help with this new problem.

Thank you very much (in advance),
  Adam Luter (Gryn)

p.s. my ATI card is a ATI 7500 64mb AGP DDR card.

[Newbie]Re: Easy newbie question: can't start xserver

2002-10-27 Thread Mike Burba
Newbies,

Fixed these issues, and here's how:
1. Problem one was that the driver didn't work for my video card. So rather than use
the s3 driver, I changed to "vesa". I'm such a newbie, I don't understand what I did,
but the driver change worked...

2. Problem two is that the mouse wouldn't work. That's because I had my mouse
configuration in the XF86Config all messed up. It was fixed when I ran the mouseconfig
utility. Very nice, asks you the type of mouse, and creates the correct entry in
XF86Config. One thing that I had to fix, though, was that it will ask you if your
mouse
is USB or PS/2. I have a USB connection into a KVM switch which goes to a PS/2
connection in my Linux box. What matters is the connection of your *box*. Found this
info in the README.mouse that is part of the distibution. Here's what my mouse looked
like after I fixed the above:

[Newbie]Disable Port 32000+

2002-10-27 Thread A.Melon
How does one disable tcp access on ports at or about 32768?
When I start X with startx, this port doesn't seem to be used,
and the -nolisten tcp option makes sure that port 6000 isn't
used either. However, when I use xdm, the -nolisten tcp option
still turns off port 6000, but a netstat -ap shows that xsm is
listening on port 32768 (or 32769, or something similar). I
have DisplayManager.requestPort 0 in xdm-config, but it doesn't
seem to work. I can't find anything in the xdm or xsm
documentation that speaks to this - everything I have found
suggests that -nolisten tcp ought to turn off remote access,
and it does turn off port 6000, but not port 32768. I don't
really want these ports turned on until I fully understand the
security implications.

[Newbie]Port 32768

2002-10-27 Thread A.Melon
How can tcp port 32768 be disabled? When using startx,
the -nolisten tcp option seems to disallow all tcp
access, but when using xdm, it only disallows port 6000.
I haven't been able to shut down port 32768, and haven't
found any documentation that describes how to do it.

Thanks.

[Newbie]Disable Port 32768

2002-10-27 Thread A.Melon
How can I turn off tcp port 32768? (Or other nearby ports?)
I am using -nolisten tcp, this seems to turn off port 6000.
When I start X with startx, everything is OK. When I use
xdm, however, port 6000 is disabled, but 32768 is open.
A netstat -ap indicates that it is the xsm process listening,
but I can't find anything in the xsm documentation that
tells how to turn it off.

[Newbie]X hangs after being loaded

2002-10-27 Thread Frederik
Greetings everyone,

I have installed a fresh Slackware with Xfree 4.1.0.
When starting X, the computer just hangs, only a hard reset
revives it.I can reach the desktop, but nothing more.I have tried
installing 4.2.0, but have recieved the same result.I googled and
searched the list archives, but have not found a similar issue.
I do not have an unusual setup, and it has worked before with the very
same distro and the same installation config, so I am suspecting a
config problem. If anyone can think of a config file/BIOS
setting/whatever that I might be missing, I would deeply appreciate
it.Even the tiniest tidbit of indormation is welcome, as I cannot think
of anything anymore.

TIA
Frederik

[Newbie](no subject)

2002-10-27 Thread Diego Delavega
How do you disable port 32768? The -nolisten tcp option
works with port 6000, but if X is started with xdm, it
doesn't shut odd port 32768. This problem doesn't seem
to occur with startx, just xdm. netstat -ap shows that
the process xsm is listening, but nothing in the xsm
documentation that I can find tells how to turn this off.

Title: X on MAC OSX

I am trying to get X started on my powerbook G4. I have installed Xfree86. The directory’s look
Right. I set the path required.

I have tried setting DISPLAY to the machine name but it does not work.

This looks like you didn't install any font packages. but AFAIK you need
the fixed fonts as minimum. Try "apt-get install xfonts-base
xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi". That should install them. Even if you use
xfs for fonts you need the font-files.

this looks like you don't have any mouse configured? Don't you have one?
Then using X will be a pity, but try the Option "AllowMouseOpenFail"

Re: [Newbie]Fatal error "no screens found" (video card SIS5513 ?)

2002-10-27 Thread C. Brewer
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

It appears it's not picking up your card for whatever reason, I'm not sure.
The actual error is no devices detected, towards the bottom before the no
screens found. Try this under the device section:

BusId "PCI:0:20:0"

If that fails to work you might run lspci -v and look for your chip id, and
add it as follows:

ChipId "0x5159"

Substitute the "0x5159" for your chip id number. Beyond that I'm at a loss.
