Thanks, I'll try that, and in fact, my mobo is also a Gigabyte.

Sometimes, on some MB's, you have to go into /etc/rc.d/init.d and edit the
file
 halt.

Go to the line (close to the bottom) that says:

 HALTARGS=-i -d -p

 and make it:

 HALTARGS=-i -d

Thats what I had to do on a Gigabyte MB I used to use... Hope this helps!
;-)

PS Oh-this won't make it shut down completely, but it will stop at a point
where you will know to just turn your machine off, without doing any harm.

rather than upgrading or reinstalling, could I not just switch to another
version of XFree86 in the control center and see if that helps?

From the info you have provided I can see nothing that should be causing
your system to freeze.
Because it is not also occurring in Windows is a good indication that the
problem is not 'bad' hardware, though it could still be hardware
related--processor speed, RAM, shared IRQs.

If installing as an upgrade does not solve the problem, install again
except choose X-3.3.6 with accel.

Once all obvious causes/solutions have been eliminated it then becomes the
tedious process of trial and error.

[newbie] problems with 8.2

2002-04-03 Per discussione Blood Slap

I've been using Mandrake 8.1 for a while now, and
just upgraded to 8.2. The installation went fine, but the first few times
I tried logging on to KDE or Gnome, they would either freeze (forcing me to
Crtl+Alt+Backspace), stop loading at the blue desktop, or freeze my entire
machine forcing me to reset. I've tried booting to "Old Linux" in Lilo,
but I have the same problems. Also, I have'nt had any major display
problems with X before, but now whenever I play any 3D games (Tux Racer,
GLTron), they are extremely choppy and unplayable. In the installation it
detected my video card (ATI Rage 128) just like before, and I chose the newest
version of X with 3D acceleration, which I think is the same I have been
using.

I'd also like to add that KDE takes much longer to
start up than it used to, and whenever I lock the screen in KDE, I can never get
back with my password, when I know it's right and have tried it over and
over. Also, the lock screen button in the Gnome toolbar does
nothing!

It appears to be a winmodem so a trip over to http://www.linmodems.org/
 might help you.

[newbie] cannot partition

2002-03-26 Per discussione Blood Slap

I've tried defragging multiple times in windows
with "rearrange files so my programs start faster" turned off and on, but I get
the same problem, so I will look for other defragmenting apps that might help,
also partitioning software.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.
