That could be 1 reason and if that is the case you may find help at

find a driver module there.

Thanks Charles. Modem is definitely a "soft" modem - a Rockwell HCF Data Fax
RTAD PCI. I haven't been able to find a driver module for it, so it looks as
if my only course of action is to buy a new one :( . If that is so, could
you give me some advice on what to look for and what to avoid?

Modem is set to the same port as in windows - COM4

I configured kppp to the same settings as windows following the User Guide.
I'm not certain I got it 100% right though - could I come back to you later
on this if necessary?

Hi
Victor,

I'm
getting the same "modem is busy" message in Linux-mandrake7.1. I believe the
reason to be because I have a "soft" modem which is not supported by Linux O.S.
Like you I'm a complete newbie [only 18 months with Windows 98] and the only
solution that occurs to me is to change the modem. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable will be able to give us both an opinion on this through the
list.

Regards
Clive
Deeming.

  Hi
  everybody!

  Does
anybody know how to deal with following
  trouble:

  I’ve
installed Mandrake 7, when trying to get online it comes with message “modem
is busy”. I haven’t start any pro which would use
  modem.

  Victor.
  PS.
Please, treat me like newbie! While reading the post, I’ve found that your
definition of newbie is some kind different than what I thought of it. I AM
TOTALLY NEW TO LINUX! And 9 years of windows experience don’t help
  much!
