Hi Victor,   I'm getting the same "modem is busy" message in Linux-mandrake7.1. I believe the reason to be because I have a "soft" modem which is not supported by Linux O.S. Like you I'm a complete newbie [only 18 months with Windows 98] and the only solution that occurs to me is to change the modem.
