[newbie] when I switch from kde to virtual console kde logs out

2002-12-05 Per discussione Marty McFly
Hey all.

I use kde on mandrake 9.0. Sometimes I like to use a virtual console. I
can't remember if it's all the time or just most of the time, but when I use
the virtual console for a short period kde logs out by itsself. Or maybe X
is crashing and restarting? Anybody know what's going on?

Thanks
Bryant

[newbie] /dev/sound/* owner set to my username. should that be?

2002-12-05 Per discussione Marty McFly
Hey all, another question. The things in /dev/sound (files or what?) are
all owned by my user, and part of the audio group. I can use sound when I
log in, but when someone else logs in, for example to KDE, they can't use
the sound stuff, because, I guess, I own it.

Not sure why I own it. Who should the owner be? And how can everyone have
access to the sound system?

Here's the output of an ls command. PS, what does c mean in the first
column?

[bryant@neutrino sound]$ ls -l
total 0
crw---1 bryant audio 14, 4 Dec 31 1969 audio
crw---1 bryant audio 14, 3 Dec 31 1969 dsp
crw---1 bryant audio 14, 0 Dec 31 1969 mixer
crw---1 bryant audio 14, 1 Dec 31 1969 sequencer
crw---1 bryant audio 14, 8 Dec 31 1969 sequencer2

thanks,
bryant

[newbie] virtual console dropping characters

2002-11-12 Per discussione Marty McFly
Here's a weird bug for you. I just installed mandrake on my computer last
night. I was able to log in to both xwindows and the virtual consoles. I
logged into a virtual console, switched to xwindows, and then later back to
the vc. When i switched back, every 'y' in the screen was blank--just an
empty space. This was the case no matter where in the filesystem I was
viewing. In the command prompt (Now my name is br ant ;), in any output.

Now, this wasn't causing data loss or crashes or anything. When I opened a
terminal window in kde it was normal. Just wondering if anybody else has
ever seen something like this. Kind of weird. I want to know y.

Thanks,
Bryant

How can I set up xwindows to use the framebuffer? I'm interested in doing
this.

Thanks,
Bryant

if worse comes to worse, you can configure X to use framebuffer until
drivers become available..

I have had to do that several times in the past with IBM machines with
onboard video.

Subject: [newbie] Radeon 9000, xwindows and Mandrake 9.0

I just installed Mandrake 9.0 on my computer, which has a Radeon 9000 agp
card in it. During the install, when the installer came to the point of
configuring the video settings, that process failed with some error
message,
something like invalid configuration. I tried to select Radeon several
times, all with the same effect. (One would think I'd learn that if a
computer does something one way once, most likely it will do it the same
way
again.)

I ended up clicking through that process, thinking it was configuring the
usage of vesa video. When Mandrake boots it boots just fine up until it
tries to start xwindows, and that process exits, so no xwindows.

I tried running xf86config. That said something like there is a correct
configuration, but there is information missing in the xf86PciInfo.h file

I checked the ATI site, and couldn't find any driver for the 9000 cards.
Only 8500 and below.

Anyway, I'm wondering if:
   1. Radeon 9000 cards work with Mandrake
   2. Do I need to reinstall (run through the installation process again),
or is there some configuration I can do in the text files? or just wait
for
a while

My computer (just put together):
Asus KT400 mb
Athlon 1.667 Ghz
Radeon 9000 agp card

Thanks,
Bryant
