[newbie] information please
I was reading newsgroups last night to try and figure out my problem. I came across some information that I want to confirm. I read that SB Live cards that are shipped with Gateway computers are not yet supported because they mix analog and digital sound or something like that. Is this true? If so does anyone know any additional information on it? Thanks Mr. Smith

Re: [newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2
Mr. Sprenger That has happened to me but not with the Mandrake install cd but with my bootcd I made (yeah...I wasted one ;-)...literally it didn't work). Hmm...I don't know how to fix it or I probably wouldn't have thrown my cd I made away. Mr. Smith Hi *!*@*, I'm trying to install 7.2 on my machine. I got an 800MHz Thunderbird on an ABit KT7-RAID. I have disaibled all IDE controllers on the board. There is an IBM DDRS 9 GB SCSI drive and a Pioneer DVD-304 drive connected to my Advance Peripherals 2941 U2W SCSI Controller. After a lot of problems I managed to boot from my 7.2 Installtion CD. After I have pressed return to install I only get a black screen mit a blinking cursor in the top left corner. that's all. Is there anybody who has an idea why this happens? Cheers, merry x-mas and a happy new year! Martin -- cYA!
[newbie] possible problem with sound card
http://www.crosswinds.net/~dopeybatman/example.jpg Ok. I found a howto that told me to run modprobe sound to see if my sound card was working corectly. So I did but it didn't have output...not exactly what I wanted so I used the wildcard and it came up with this information (see screenshot). If anyone can help me dechypher (its not really cryptic just something I don't fully understand yet) it would be most appreciated. Thanks Mr. Smith
[newbie] discovery sound need to fix
I went into the kde and used one of the configuration tools (can't remember which) and it reported that my Sound Blaster Live Value and nVidia Riva TNT2 were sharing the same interrupt on 11. Also my Ethernet and USB were on the same and they were on 09. Can anyone help me fix this? Thanks again Mr. Smith
Re: [newbie] --- mbr in the windows partition (Alan)
Install linux and then Windows and create a boot floppy next time...but besides that nope. Sorry...I had the same problem at one point in time...back with Redhat 5.2 I accidentally did the same thing you did...but I didn't have an internet connection or anyone to ask so I just formatted it and started over. Mr. Smith well, thx Alan but my problem is that I have the mbr in the windows partition cause I had to format (...) and now i cant access the linux partition. Any ideas?
Re: [newbie] Mounting windows 2000 on Linux
Dr. Stocki Umm...I don't know much about Win2k but I do know that it is a continuation of NT and NT doesn't use FAT (well it can) but it uses NTFS by default. That could be your problem. I don't know if Win2k uses NTFS or another file structure but just to give you some kind of insight I thought I would tell you. Sorry I can't help you further. Mr. Smith Hi, I have a windows 2000 partition (20Gb) and 3 linux paritions (20 Gb total) and I have installed mandrake linux 7.1 and I am un able to see the windows 2000 parition. I tried: mkdir /mnt/windows mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows and I got the error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 or too many mounted file systems. I don't have very many mounted file systems (3 or 4). So I am not sure why it is giving me that message. I am running windows 2000 on the other partition. I ran a program called diskdrake (comes with mandrake) to look at the different partitions. It had labeled the windows partition as other, and not as fat. I tried to use diskdrake to set a mount point on the windows 2000 partition and it gave a page of error messages. Is there a manual (ie I type in the commands) of setting up mount points? Thank you in advance, Sincerely, Trevor
Re: [newbie] BIOS
Mr. Sherman I would help you but I don't have a compaq...Mine just says plug in play [on/off] but mine is gateway...sorry Mr. Smith I was just going to ask the same question, but about a Compaq...I pressed F10 (thats what the tech support guy said it was), but couldnt find Plug n Play...anybody? peace, Rog http://www.slammingrooves.com Registered Linux user #190719 On Thu, 21 Dec 2000, msoltys wrote: Does anyone know how to turn off plug and play on a HP Pavillion computer? Re: [newbie] --- mbr in the windows partition (Alan)
Yes it is possible to access a ext2 file structure from windows. I know there is software at www.hotfiles.com or at least there was a year ago. I couldn't get it to work but my friend liked it and it worked well for him. Sorry I can't remember the name but there is software. Mr. Smith Well, I wasn´t followed all post. But I believe the real problem was Sousa have some files in linux he need. And is difficult to access to ext2 partition. And what´s about to access ext2 partition from windows to rescue files ? I believe (but don´t know) exist any soft that can access to ext2 partition from windows. It´s possible ? (sorry for my bad english). Daniel
[newbie] still sound...
Group, Does anyone know anything I can do or anyone I can ask that can get my Sound Blaster Live Value working in 7.2. I have tried pretty much everything the group has recommended so far...I also tried a bunch of stuff on deja as well. I tried to update the drivers but it said there was a kernel conflict. At one point before I reinstalled, it said something about the device or resource being busy but I don't remember exactly. Also when trying to configure it using harddrake (in root on the command prompt) and it said that it couldn't adjust the volume because it didn't have a mixer. Hell if I know...I am about to give up on it...oh well Thanks for everyones help Mr. Smith
[newbie] cdrom bootdisk?
I would like to know if it is possible (I am pretty sure it is) to create a bootdisk on a cd. I would like to know because I am using Mandrake, BeOS (free), and Winblows. I find the floppy slightly...slow. So I was just wondering how I could create a bootdisk to launch linux from a cd instead of the floppy I created. Thanks in advance, Mr. Smith
[newbie] Next Question
Ok. I have been playing around in linux and I was trying to access my floppy from both my superuser account and root. I did this via /mnt/floppy and I believe they are being supermounted. Do I still have to mount them or should they be accessible? Under root it was locked out which doesn't make sense to me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance again Mr. Smith
Re: [newbie] BIOS setting: Plug 'n play OS
I can't even get my soundcard to work and my PnP Bios has always been "off." I exited X and "su"ed to root and typed sndconfig and it still doesn't play sound in the test screen...Stupid Sound Blaster Live! Value cards...grrr... Mr. Smith Hi all, I've discovered that my sound card won't work unless I disable the PnP setting in my BIOS. I'm dual booting to Windoze98 and Mandrake, so I'm wondering what the consequences will to Windoze. Will Windoze start spontaneously launching national defense missiles in the name of Peter Pan or something? Thanks, Miark
