[newbie] my adsl/router problems fixed. Thanks

2001-12-20 Per discussione Mr.E.

I had similar problem as some other users. Was able to connect to Bellsouth DSL
service with just my NIC card, but when I added new Linksys Router, I couldn't get
online.

Thanks to users who pointed out that I should set default gateway to the Router's ip
address 192.168.1.1

also, I set my PC's IP address to 192.168.1.2 (instead of leaving it at 10.0.0.1 or
something) as someone elso suggested. Then plugged in the domain name server IP's.

Back online! thanks.

[newbie] do I need AMD Kernel

2001-11-30 Per discussione Mr.E.

I have an AMD Athlon Thunderbird processor.

Do I need to install an Athlon kernel, or just leave everything (Mandrake 8.1) as is?

Saw this in an issue of Penguin Shell and didn't know if applied to all Linux distros
or not:

Athlon Kernel]
If you're running an Athlon machine, up2date will update your kernel to i386. Instead
of updating it with up2date, download the 2.4.9-7.athlon.rpm and rpm -ivh it. Grub
will see the old kernel as default so you just need to reset that and you're golden.

[newbie] NVidia and Shutdown problem

2001-11-28 Per discussione Mr.E.

I don't know if the two are related, but
I installed the Nvidia rpm's from MandrakeUser then did XFdrake (all steps done from
console with no X running).

then did a Shutdown now so I can come back with a cold re-boot.

BUT, the system wouldn't shut down all the way.

I got a going to single user message, with a prompt that was sh or ssh 2.23 (I
think) where I tried the Shutdown now again, but no luck.. back to that weird
message and prompt.

Finally issued a Ctrl-Alt-Delete... and system then Rebooted.

Any reasons why this would occur

someone posted about the 2nd-to-the-last resort of rebooting a system (reset is the
last). its something like

  alt+prntscreen+R
  alt+prntscreen+E
  alt+prntscreen+S
  alt+prntscreen+B

or something like that (please correct me if im wrong). they said it would write the
necessary data from memory to harddisk and perform a reboot (or was it a shutdown?). i
have never found any docs about this but it works (if i hit the right combination of
course ;-)
