[newbie] Sound Blaster Problems

2000-11-26 Per discussione Philip Ferguson

Hello.

I have a soundblaster pro soundcard.

For some reason, I can't find soundrake, so I used sndconfig to setup the
sound card.

Now it works with midi and wav files, but it sounds sort of "gurrgully" ...
not very clear.

Also, I can't hear any CD sound from it.

Any ideas?

Phil

[newbie] Some 7.2 issues with sound, printing and netscape

2000-11-25 Per discussione Philip Ferguson

Hello.

I just installed 7.2 on my IBM Aptiva (Pentium 233). I'm having a few
problems.

First of all, my netscape button bar is in black and white, but all other
colours are working out fine.

Secondly, I have a crystal sound card (the ones that come with an Aptiva)
and I can't get it to work. The hardware manager thing gives me an error
saying that the sound card is busy.

Finally, I have a Cannon Bubblejet 100 (yup ... the really old one) plugged
into LPT1 (which is lp0 I guess, in Linux). After setting it up, it asks me
if I want to do a test page. I say yes and then it tells me that lp is not
ready. Needless to say, nothing comes out.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Phil

[newbie] Mandrake Update

2000-11-21 Per discussione Philip Ferguson

Hello.

I've recently found the need to update my rpms and I thought that the
Madrake update tool would be good.

However, when I try to update, I find that whenever I select a package, it
is dependent on almost all of the others. This is fine and I don't have any
quams with just updating everything (in fact I would like to). What worries
me is that it ways that I should not use Mandrake update to update my
kernel. It says I should update the kernel manually.

Do I need to pay attention to this warning? If so, then how do I update my
kernel? Then, how do I let Mandrake Update know that it's already updated
so that when I go into Mandrake Update again, it won't try to update the
kernel all over again?

Thanks,

Philip Ferguson

They are simply different compress programs.
You will need to install bzip2. You can download the RPM from
RH.

[newbie] PCMCIA Ethernet Card

2000-09-12 Per discussione Philip Ferguson

Hello again.

First of all, thanks to everyone that helped me out earlier. Everyone has
been a great help.

I'm now entering the world of PCMCIA eithernet cards. I have a Linksys
EtherFast 10/100 PC Card. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT Laptop.

The instructions for the card say that I should be using the tulip.c drive.
So, I run that graphical netconf thing, I enter in all of the stuff. I just
guessed that eth0 was my ethernet card, but I can't be sure. Anyway, it
fails to initialize when I reboot. Something about insmod trying to bring
up eth0?

Another wierd thing that happens during booting is that it keeps trying to
find a directory called /proc/bus/pci/devices but it doesn't exist.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Phil

Re: [newbie] Minicom Program

2000-09-08 Per discussione Philip Ferguson

Thanks for the quick response! This is my first time on this list.

When I type minicom, it warns me that it couldn't find a configuration file
and then tries to find my modem ... which doesn't exist.

The reason why I need minicom is to talk to a small credit card sized
computer over a serial link. Any suggestions? Where can I get this
configuration file?

Thanks,

Phil
