Re: [newbie] Single Network Firewall

What kind of cards are they? I've never heard of a P166 handling one PCI
 NIC let alone 3 !!
If these cards are in fact ISA, then it should support 1 or 2 but even so,
 I can't see it handling 3.
Linux may detect them, but I'd be impressed if it could actually run that
 many at all.

My home router runs FreeBSD 4.5 with 2 PCI network cards, in a 486/66.

Re: [newbie] Sound trouble, again, plus joystick

2001-12-17 Per discussione Richard Wenninger

did your integrated i810 sound card get turned on in the bios? I would first
disable this card in the bios, then try to reconfigure via Mandrake Control
Center.

On Monday 17 December 2001 06:14 am, you wrote:
I've got a Soundblaster Live card, plus an integrated i810 sound chip.
I'm using the SB exclusively - I don't want to have anything to do with the
latter. The sound configuration on my system, which never worked adequately
to start with ( =midi nonfunctional), has gone from bad to worse. One
day when I started up the system, Linux decided suddenly to detect the i810
to which it had until then paid no attention. Now the situation is that
whenever I start up the system I have to run sndconfig to get _any_ sound
at all out. The configure functionality in HardDrake can't do anything at
all about it: when it tries to play an 8 bit sample with the i810,
I get 'sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': Permission denied' (and no
sound), and when it tries the same thing for SBLive, I get no errors, nor
 sound.

Now, I'm absolutely losing patience with this PoS. Could someone advice
me how to get things in working order? It would be absolutely wonderful
to get instructions on how to remove _everything_ related to sound and
then reinstall the drivers/whatevers _correctly_ from scratch.

Also, I can't figure out how to get my joystick detected. It's an
 old-fashioned non-USB affair (a Gravis with a rudder wheel), and I have
two joy ports to spare, one in the motherboard, one in the SB card.

Re: [newbie] NVIDIA - Making Head-Way!

I really have no clue... but I'll throw out some suggestions anyway. Take
these with a grain of salt.

Try setting X to run at the same color depth, and resolution as UT, and see
if that fixes it. I believe on a lot of these, the color depth must match.
The color depth is configured in XF86Config-4. The resolution can be cycled
by Ctrlaltkeypad +. It will cycle the res's you've configured for use.

changed. Then I read on Nvidia's site that I should edit the X86Config-4

The setup is for a reason, hence the carefully chosen wording of the

31200. The Winmodem gets 50666 and also the linux boxs require internet/ftp

I don't think there is anything inherent in Linux which will prevent
memory leaks -- it comes down to care and testing by the programmer.
AFAIK, memory leaks can be created anywhere C or C++ are used (and
  probably many other languages).

Yup, I just tested that. Linux does not appear to make any attempt to stop
memory leaks. I wrote a quick program with an infinite loop that
dynamically allocated some memory. Watching top, its memory usage climbed
 dramatically.

There's really no way for Linux to know if I really am using that memory or
not, so I don't see how it could interfere.

For you, go RED HAT 7.2, as I have experience getting that working on a

My 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade lost half my prefs, now tries to mount a floppy

Has *anybody* had ANY luck with this supposed upgrade?

30-35 packages failed to 'upgrade' without any explanation why, all on
