I really have no clue... but I'll throw out some suggestions anyway. Take these with a grain of salt.
Try setting X to run at the same color depth, and resolution as UT, and see if that fixes it. I believe on a lot of these, the color depth must match. The color depth is configured in XF86Config-4. The resolution can be cycled by <Ctrl><alt><keypad +>. It will cycle the res's you've configured for use.
