[newbie] HD.......

2000-10-13 Per discussione Robert Griffiths

Hi, recently when i've been browsing the internet i have noticed,
particularly when scrolling on a webpage that my hard drive is working a bit
harder than usual, just seems a bit noisier and working overtime, it's like
it's just spinning faster when i scroll...i'm running AMD K6-2 450mhz,
128meg Ram, 6.4 gig HD, dual booting win98/linux. If i haven't explained
this properly please tell me, any help would be greatthanks in advance.

RE: [newbie] Microsoft bails out Corel!!

2000-10-04 Per discussione Robert Griffiths

Talking about MS Linux, when Microsoft first took over hotmail it was
running on Solaris, microsoft moved it over to NT, found out that NT
couldn't handle worth a damn, so what did they do...moved back over to
solaris...bottom line, microsoft do use *nix.

In my mind, it seems like running something in wine is a bit of a kludge -
especially a full blown productivity app...

hmm, maybe i'm just naive but so what if MS bails out Corel as far as
linux
goes. There is/was nothing stopping MS from creating their own
distribution
of linux nor stopping them from building applications for Linux. I
can't
believe that there aren't any MS programmers running linux at home (or
at
work) and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that apache is running
   somewhere in that company.

Just a thought here. Corel has successfully (not in my opinion but in the
minds of some) ported their Office suite to Linux using Wine. If you dig
very
deeply you find that within MS there's a debate about whether they
should/shouldn't produce MS Office for Linux. Could there be a connection?
Spin is everything these days it seems. Just thought I'd suggest that this
story might have a positive spin in the end.

Cheers --- Larry

Hi, are you running a firewall, if not you should take the time to get one
set up on your box, configure it properly and this should keep people out,
although a good hacker will still get in, your firewall should alert you if
someone is scanning your system. Change your passwords to upper and lower
case with a mixture of symbols, even with this your password can still be
cracked but it would be a bit harder. If you are using icq or some sort of
messenger..beware, when talking to someone, you and that person have a
direct connection with each other, all that person has to do is run netstat
-n on the command line and bingo..he has your IP address..easy as that, from
there they can scan to see what ports are open on your system, hence the
firewall so you can guard those ports. If you are getting regular attacks
from the same person, you could be infected with a trojan, when you go
on-line the trojan that sit's in your machine will send your IP address back
to that hacker and then he will hack you again. This is just a brief
outline, there are many way's that it can be done. Personally i don't use my
linux box to go online as i don't feel it's secure enough yet, as i'm still
learning linux, i use my windows box cos it's like fort knox...if you get
mail from someone that you don't know and it has an attachment, don't open
it [delete it] for all you know it could be a virus, soon as you open it,
your infected...Oh yes, see all the stuff at the top of this e-mail, their's
enough info there for you to be hacked..worrying isn't it...by the way,
don't get the wrong idea...i'm not a hacker..i just study alot.

 Hope this helps...Bye.

I am sorry Robin that I don't know enough to be able to help you, but
I have a question

How long were you online that gave the bad guy opportunity to
do damage...are you continually hooked up online?

The reason I ask is I am using the fly low approach of hit,
get the mail/info, and get off the phone line ... I feel sort of naked
while I am doing it

Hi, i've got a U.S. Robotics aswell, my speaker don't work either, i'm new
to this, when i was setting up my connection, the only thing that stopped me
getting connected was not putting the right DNS servers addresses in, soon
as i corrected that, i was connected in no time. If this is the problem you
should be able to get the addresses from your ISP or go into MS-DOS Type
WINIPCFG You should then get a pop up telling you your DNS address along
with alot of other stuff. Well hope this help's...good luck.

Robert Griffiths

I can not get this modem working wit Linux not sure
why though, It works just find when running windows.
It is a sportster 33.6 ENT FAX modem and I find I like
the little thing ;).

The problem I am having is that when I go to call out,
it finds the modem says it is ready then starts to
initialize and goes no father. My modem is in COM
port 1, I used dev/ttyS0 instead of dev/modem. I also
tried it the other way as well. It once said that it was
setting speaker volume but stopped there.

Speaker does not mean that much to me anyway since
I can not seem to get my sound going hehe.. Dam sound
it built onto the Mobo it is ESS and SB compatible but
still does not seem to work.

Anyway and help would be great. Thanks!

Stephen

[newbie] whois nslookup..

For all those that helped me with my traceroute problem...thanks. I've been
trying to locate 'whois nslookup' which i can't find although i've seen
fwhois on the installation cd, my question is, is nslookup on the cd under a
different name because i can seem to find it, also is there a whois instead
of fwhois, as kpackage tells me that there is a difference between them. I
know this is a dumb question but any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I've got U.S. Robotics external, it works great, most externals work, but
most internals don't although i heard somebody say somewhere that they had
an internal U.S. Robotics and it was okay. Dunno about the sound card
though, i didn't try to get mine working, it just worked. I used partition
magic before installing mandrake, it comes with the boxed pack, it does
everything for you including a swap partition, i'm new myself, so i hope
this helps.

 Robert.

I'm not sure I understand, but are you trying to install ON TOP of windows?
Linux is an OS in it's own right so you don't need to do that (if that was
your plan). Repartition your drive to give some empty space for Mandrake
to
live and then install. I'm using Win2k pro, server, Win98 and Mandrake on
the same machine without any problems. If you need further instruction,
send another message and we'll see if we can get you going =)

Mike

Is there a way around the idiotic no MS-DOS program installed to demoralize
users on Windows Me, aside from uninstalling? I just bought this thing,
mainly because I wasn't that impressed with Red Hat. However, I can not
install due to Window's Me. I'm thinking I could just boot from CD and
install that way, like I did with Red Hat, but not totally sure, as there
is
two CD's and don't want to mess anything up.. Oh, for clarification's sake,
here's my specs

AMD K6/2 500 Mhz
ASUS P5A Mobo
Diamond Viper V770 (AGP) 32 MB
Diamond Multimedia Sound II (MX2000)
U.S Robotics 56K v.90
160 MB SDRAM PC100
15 GB HD
3.5 GB HD (Empty, where I want to put Mandrake)
Generic IDE 40X CD-ROM
Microsoft Force Feedback Pro Joystick

I think that about covers it, I think the only problems with my Hardware
will be the Sound Card and the Modem, didn't see 'em in the compatibility
list. Though if anyone knows of a patch or other technicall thingie, it
would be most appriciated. First things first though, I need to get the
'lil
bugger installed *winks*

Thanks,

John

It works, just wait a few minutes. It seems like it displays the message
then
does some more processing before unmounting the cd.
