[newbie] Floppy/Zip IO Errors

2001-01-16 Per discussione Sean Galland

Hello,
My floppy/zip drives are having IO errors in Mandrake 7.2. I hacked the /etc/fstab file and tried setuid and set it so that all users can use it... but to no avail. The messages I get are when in root "input/output error". And in a regular user "Permission Denied". I thought maybe its a lock file or something in there but can't find it. Any hepl is appreciated.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Re: [newbie] Here is the dumbest question ever asked!

If you have a graphical login, select the shutdown tab and select shut down,
or shut down and reboot. If you are user (not sure, but I think only root
can do this) I just type "shutdown now", or "reboot".

I can call this the dumbest question ever because it is and it's mine.

What command do you use to logoff and shutdown the system? I have it set
to
load X at startup and I can choose logoff, but that just puts me at the X
login screen again. I have just been hitting the reset button to reboot,
but
Linux yells at me the next time I boot it up.

Thanks.. this is really the least of my concerns/questions at the moment,
but I'll save the other ones for later when I've learned a bit more.

Re: [newbie] Possibilities of a Linux Website

If you want to know the problems of
the linux comunity it is simple. Lack of support. Not only hardware
manufacturers, but TECHNICAL SUPPORT LIKE BYNARI REALLY SUCKS. I called Bynari
for help, I emailed MandrakeSoft, everyone to get some stinking tech support and
I can never get it

   Linux Community,

I was thinking of adding a section to my website devoted
  to
the problems of the Linux community and Linux development.

I would appreciate comments/feedback about the idea.

I have a similar card, try looking at www.alsa-project.org and download the
latest drivers from there.

know how to solve this is?
By the way, my soundcard is ESS1868, running LM 6.1. Tried the soundcard

Re: [newbie] 6.1 - 7.0.2 Wipes Everything?

2000-02-23 Per discussione Sean Galland

When you install 7.0.2 just use the upgrade option, which will install the
new features and kernal. If you select install, well kiss 6.1 good bye

Now that I can get on the Internet with it, I'm delighted with the 6.1
someone sent me. I've already ordered 7.0.2 to get the latest and
greatest. My question is whether I should spend any time customizing my
6.1 install if I'm going to need to trash it when I put 7.0.2 on.
