Re: [newbie] AMD system question
Hi there Over the years I've had AMD CPUs from 386 to Athlon and never had any prolems with any OS or hardware caused by the fact I was running AMD. For me there is only one CPU of choice, AMD everytime. Stewart On Thursday 18 Apr 2002 09:05 am, you wrote: Hi Everyone! I'm planning to change my hardware from intel to AMD and I'd like to know your experiences. Re: [newbie] PC doesn't switch off on powerdown
If memory serves you have to have power management fully enabled in the BIOS then it will shut down automaticallu. Stewart On Tuesday 19 February 2002 9:52 am, you wrote: Hello all This should be a fairly simple one: when I log out from Linux, my PC goes through the whole shutdown process, displays 'power down' on the screen, and then waits for me to manually switch the machine off. Is this a Linux feature or should the PC be able to switch itself off? By the way, it will happily reboot the machine if I ask it to, and Win98 has no problems switching off the PC itself. Any suggestions? Re: [newbie] 3D Graphics cards
Hi Wes Can't help you at all with running Linux with a Viper card. My other machine only ever runs a very stripped down installation of Win98SE, although I'm looking at moving this over to Linux in the future. About the RAM issue I have 256 MB installed and unlike Windowze 98SE it seems that most of the time it is not using the swap file and has free memory to spare. At present I have my system running with SETI in the background and Mozilla up and a console session and top is reporting 172228K used 83044 free, swap 0K used. Last weekend I was showing my brother how good Linux is and had apps up on four desktops including Star Office and was online and that was the first time I have known it to use the swap file. Perhaps this none use of the swap file is why KDE seems so quick compared to Win98. Hope this helps Stewart Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] 3D Graphics cards
Hi All I'm in need of a new 3D graphics card that works well under Linux ( V8.1 ). There seems to have been alot of problems with nVidia drivers reported on various newsgroups.ATI seems not to supprot their Vivid!xs cards under Linux so I don't know where to look for info. My only ;-) requirements are that it works under Win98, at least for a little while yet, and that it works with OpenGL under Linux. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [newbie] 3D Graphics cards
Thanks to all who answered. My first choice would have been an nVidia card of some sort. However the Vivid!xs cards are getting some good reports, under Win.As for Matrox I'm running a millenium G400 at present and it has been very good but now is not up to the job, again under Win.The sooner I move totally over to Linux the better. The GF3 cards are too expensive for my needs so it'll be a GF2 of some sort for me. Thanks again for putting my mind at rest over the nVidia cards. Re: [newbie] Automounting problem
Tom Brinkman wrote: The 'old' supermount became incompatible with newer 2.4.x kernels. To the point (IIRC) it was completely broken by 2.4.6. So the Mandrake developers completely rewrote supermount to work with the new kernels. This process takes time and testing, and by 2.4.13 they've got it working properly again. If you want a more indepth understanding of this Robin, search the last few months on http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-cooker for 'supermount'. Where can I get this update, so far I've not been able to find it. Stewart Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Automounting problem
Tom Brinkman wrote: The 'update' is to install a 2.4.13 Mandrake kernel. This will most likely require an initscripts and iptables upgrade also. Newest 2.4.13's might require an lm_sensors upgrade also All these files can be d/l'd from cooker mirrors. I use the ready made kernel, but src.rpms for the others http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/cookerdevel.php3 Thanks for the info. Stewart Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] The problem with Linux
Some interesting point here, generally I agree with what you say. However you must not forget that M$ is where it is today NOT because of good software but because of a history of sharp practice in marketing that stretches back almost to the foundation of the company. One of thier best departments must be the legal one who in the past have tied down PC makers to MS products to the total exclusion of other OS's. After some many years of developement and the huge amount om money that MS say they have invested in developement Windows should be a lot better than it is. At present I use both 8.1 and Win98SE and IMHO in every area where it counts 8.1 is better with the exception of installation of software. As you said what we need is some standardized features including an installer along the lines of those used in Windows. The rest of the time the diversity of Linux is one of the things I like about it because no matter what you want to do Linux does it better (excepting playing games). You only have to look at how much better / easier installing Linux is now compared with what it was not that long ago. In general though I think the developement of Linux, any distro, is going well when you consider how long it's been in developement, ten years, and how long MS have been working on Windows. [newbie] Staroffice 5.2 and M8
Hi All I have a problem that is driving me mad.I tried installing StarOffice 5.2 whilst logged in as root. It works fine when logged in as root but will not work from my user session. I tried altering the permissions but they will not stick. I tried un-installing SO5.2 which it told me it had done. I then tried re-installing but this time from a user session. It then tells me that it is still installed. No matter what I try I can't resolve this problem. Can someone please tell how do I get rid of StarOffice completely so that I can start again and then how can I get it to work from a user session.
