[newbie] Forwarded Request + missing messages

2000-11-04 Per discussione elldee

Hi

I'm posting this on behalf of my friend Jim, who's also subscribed to the list. He's
made several attempts to send it himself but, for some reason, it doesn't appear on
the list. Yet he continues to receive the massive amount of mail that everyone else is
sending!

Regards

Lance

Here's Jim's message;

Hey

I seem to remember a small app that one ran under doze to configure - i.e. modem and
nic. Then booted a spare machine, with said modem and nic and it booted a small
Linux that acted as a proxy/firewall. It could run on low end boxes, i.e. 486's with
8MB and no hard drive.

Please tell me I didn't dream this and remind of the name and location for download.

TIA

Jim

So run your email through a filter before downloading it? Combine that
with serious bitching at your phone company for being overpriced.

All this so that people are 'free' to post 200 off-topic messages a
day to the list? So the responsibility falls on the recipient to
control what he gets in his Inbox. What about the responsibility of
posters to stay within the published mandate of the list?

I've spent more time deleting than reading over the last few days.

Mark

Thanks for this.

try reinstalling and this time don't do the HDD optimization. I don't
think with a drive that big and a system as efficient as linux that you're
going to really need to worry about optimizing, and I suspect that there
is a small , but apparently noticable enough hardware conflict going on
there. I also suspect that it will all evaporate as soon as you install
without optimizing.

I don't actually remember 'choosing' HDD optimisation! I'll have to go
do it again... paying more attention this time :-).

I don't think I'll get a chance to try it before Saturday but I'll
let you know the result.

Thanks again.

[Re: [newbie] multiple email messages ]

Hi

I've had a similar problem using Netscape 4.7x on Windows on more than one occasion.
With me, though, it was Sent messages constantly re-appearing in the Unsent folder,
causing errors. The first time I managed to clear it by emptying my Trash folder - I
had thousands of messages in it, going back months.

The next time it happened this cure didn't work, and I had to resort to editing the
actual files that contained the stored messages. Can't remember the name of the files
but I can look them up if you need them.

Hope this helps.

Hi, everybody!

Here's the deal. I've been getting double, sometimes quadruple messages
from the newslist for a while. But now my inbox is getting full with
the same messages even after I delete them over and over again. I'm
using Netscape 4.7x? to read my mail (communicator) and already made
sure that it's not set to leave messages on the server.

I don't want to flood anybody's mailbox with messages about flooded
mailbox, but since no one else mentioned a problem, I figuired it might
not be a server p-roblem. Is anyone experiencing a similar problem?
ANd can anyone help me fix this?

Thanks!
