Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: '82 CB450SC project question(s)

2012-02-13 Thread Kevin Green
Got a key made finally this weekend. Ended up at a locksmith who was able
to make the key from the code. Pulled the carb rack out of the PineSol
finally last night. It took a little spraying with carb cleaner and
blasting air through the passages, but I'm satisfied it'll flow enough fuel
now. Do I need to open up the air cutoff valves on the sides of the carbs
to make sure those are clean? I'm ordering new carb gaskets today and want
to make sure I don't need to pay for shipping again because I missed a part.

I have them... Great tire. Much improved ride. 4k so far, barely
showing wear (although I mainly just cruise with this bike). No crazy
issues, tires havent burst into flames or anything.

I did not feel any adverse handling effects. Possibly the opposite,
since these inspire so much more confidence than the crap Dunlops that
were on it...

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] it feels so good (not a night hawk post)

2012-02-13 Thread Kevin Green
I've got a pretty long e-mail thread running about it, but to recap, when I
bought it it had been parked for 26 years. I rebuilt the top of the
motor. I'm in the process of starting to put the carbs back together now
so if I get gaskets in for it this week I'll hopefully be able to start it
for the first time this weekend. After that it'll still need new tires,
sprockets, chain, and eventually it sounds like I'll need new forks, but
I'm going to start out riding it with the current forks as long as the
seals will hold some amount of air pressure. I've got the bike stripped
down to the frame, motor and wiring right now and I'll need to reassemble
everything but I want to take a stab at getting rid of as much rust as
possible first, because almost all the chrome has a some surface rust. I
guess I need to ask about Phosphoric Acid here and see if anybody has
suggestions on where I can get several gallons for a reasonable price (not
$8/quart at my local Advance Auto Parts) so I can dip big parts like
mufflers, front fender, etc.

Hey everyone,

I spent a little bit more than I initially planned on. But I finally
got to check the bike out and it is in top shape. When I say it looks
like it just rolled off the showroom floor, I am not exaggerating.
Super clean, no scratches/dents (at all), sounds great - everything I

seemed to take good care of all of his bikes.

Thanks again for your help! I will post pictures when I get it here.

getting 40-50 mpg.  What has needed fixing: the tach, as mentioned. A
leak in the valve cover gasket. Two rebuilds of the starter and a new

and a new right pod switch.  That's it.

In fact, I paid $2000 when I bought the bike in 2004, with about 20K

bike has not been allowed to sit and rust or has been abused.

The bike has about 22k miles and the owner is asking $2250, but I

any major components that I should expect to replace at this many

They are truly great bikes, their beauty is in their simplicity. My advice is
if you decide to step up to something sport oriented down the road, don't sell

Congratulations, once you get riding it any doubt about price will
vaporize.. They are truly great bikes, their beauty is in their simplicity.
My advice is if you decide to step up to something sport oriented down the
road, don't sell it right away and hang onto her for another season. For
me, it took owning a high maintenance, high strung bike to appreciate the
nighthawk's simplicity and easy going nature.

  Hey everyone,

I spent a little bit more than I initially planned on. But I finally
got to check the bike out and it is in top shape. When I say it looks
like it just rolled off the showroom floor, I am not exaggerating.
Super clean, no scratches/dents (at all), sounds great - everything I
could think of seemed to be ok. The guy was a motorcycle nut, so he
seemed to take good care of all of his bikes.

Thanks again for your help! I will post pictures when I get it here.
