My favorite trick is to put a notch in the side with a drill, dremel, etc.
and then whack it with a cold chisel and hammer.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Stuck bolt

2016-09-21 Thread James O'Gorman
Soak it with PB blaster and use Impact if available. I agree with a new
socket as well - old worn sockets = rounded bolt heads. Using Mapp gas
would be the additional step. It burns hotter than Propane. You'll find the
little yellow bottles in the hardware store next to the little blue propane
bottles. Hit it with one or two torches of MAPP gas for a while after a
good soaking of PB blaster and you should be able to get it off. If the
bolt head breaks, you can usually weld a nut over the broken-off stud.
Avoid using any extensions if possible.

I wouldn't suggest the bottle jack method (although it does sound very
good). This would actually result in a lot of broken tools. This is because
it puts a lot of side-ways stress on all the components instead of axial
(twisting) force on the bolt threads themselves. If you have used a 4-way
tire iron, think about how using handles on both sides of the bolt versus
just on one side like with a ratchet. If you've ever tapped a thread, the
concept is the same. Tap handles are always "T" handles so that the tap
doesn't break off. 100% of the force goes to the threads instead of the
components like the handle, ratchet, socket, extension, ets.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Tire pressure

2016-09-21 Thread jrhoyt0895
I wouldn't bother filling the tires with nitrogen. They're already filled
with regular air, which contains about 78% nitrogen.

Yes, I think you have a leak, and since you're riding a bike that has
spoked wheels (a 2008 Nighthawk 250, right?) I recommend you install a
fresh innertube and after finding and removing the offending object that
caused the leak.

On spoked wheels, the rims often have sharp bits that press against the
innertube. It's the reason you're supposed to install a new innertube
every time you install a new tire. Look for those sharp points and file
them down while you have the tire off.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Coast-to-Coast trip

2016-09-21 Thread EGrider
First, I recommend that you get rid of that top box and strap a piece of
Samsonite on your bike with bungees so that you can be cool. Then make sure
your headlight goes out once in a while (I actually finally installed a new
right handlebar assembly this week, so that's hopefully history).

You might as well take or play cat and mouse with I-70 to Denver because
there's nothing in the way of natural beauty across the Midwest and Great
Plains anyway. There are roads that parallel I-70 and are almost as fast
and a tad bit more interesting. From Denver you can either take 285 down
through Fairplay and head to Durango (you could see the Great Sand Dunes
north of Alamosa, which are cool) or you can go over the mountains on I-70.
I would go I-70 or parallel back roads. Stop in Boulder, Central City,
Vail, the spa at Glenwood Springs, or do Rocky Mountain National Park if
you have time. Take the Loveland Pass instead of the Eisenhower Tunnel
across the divide for the view. Get off I-70 and cut down through Utah on
Rt. 191, making sure to see Arches Natl. Park in Moab, Utah and maybe
Canyonlands farther down.

Continue on Rt. 191 though Mexican Hat, Utah and then Monument Valley by
all means, and then over to the Grand Canyon. After that you can see the
London Bridge at Lake Havasu City (not so exciting, but weird) and Joshua
Tree Natl. Park, or just take I-40 if you just want to get to Pasadena at
that point.

I envy you my friend. Happy Trails. Keep the pictures coming.
