[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Nighthawk 550 exhaust mods. Possibilities?

2016-03-18 Thread Vince
Well, from all I'm reading I'll probably just leave well enough alone. I
had a Sabre V45 years ago. I was able to pull the baffles from that. They
weren't welded in. I didn't loose any noticeable power and the bike had a
great growl. Not Harley annoying, just a nice mean growl. Wish I could do
something similar. I don't understand why the baffles on the 550 had to be
welded in??
I do like the idea of the ear plugs. I'll have to try that. I've never
worn ear plugs. I know, you're supposed to and not doing so is supposed to
harm your hearing long run, but honestly, I've been riding for 35 years and
as far as I can tell my hearing is just fine.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Nighthawk 550 exhaust mods. Possibilities?

2016-03-14 Thread Vince
I'm don't have the bike here with me at the moment, but I was just
thinking, I don't believe there are any rivets at the end of the pipes on
the 550. The baffles are literally welded in, so unless I'm mistaken,
which is quite possible:) there is no need to have rivets.

If I'm right, and there aren't rivets, can I just drill holes into the back
of the baffling cover? If so, does anyone have an idea if doing that would
somehow mess up the backpressure/air mixture, etc. and have and effect on
how the bike runs?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Nighthawk 550 exhaust mods. Possibilities?

2016-03-12 Thread Vince
Yeah I understand those of you that like the quiet. When I was younger I
couldn't get my bikes loud enough, but now that I'm older I'd rather be
less conspicuous. The problem though is that most of the time I'm riding
with my son, who has a loud bike. So not only am I unable to hear my bike,
I actually can hear his bike really well, which is distracting (And please,
no advice about telling my son to get a quieter bike:) ). Maybe it
shouldn't matter, but I always enjoyed listening to the engine, helping me
decide on gear changes. Obviously that isn't the only thing I use to
decide on a gear change, but it is part of it. Now all I can hear is the
growl of his engine:)

Though I get it, that a lot of you guys like the quiet, I'm looking for
someone out there who actually has an idea for making it louder without
changing the entire exhaust. The "drilling holes around the rivets" idea
is interesting. Anyone else know anything about that? Does is
significantly increase volume? More importantly does it mess with the back
pressure/carb mixture, etc.

Thanks!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk 550 exhaust mods. Possibilities?

2016-03-11 Thread Vince
I have an 83 550. I love everything about the bike with one exception. I
wish it wasn't so darn quiet. I don't need it to be as loud as a Harley,
but I honestly can't hear the engine above the wind noise in my full face
helmet once I get above 50 mph. I can see that the baffles are welded in.
Other than changing the system to a 4 into 1 header or something like that,
is there any way to modify the stock exhaust? I only paid $900 for the
bike, so I'm not going to spend hundreds on another exhaust. Thanks

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: hesitation at low RPM's, sputtering, stalling out at idle

2016-03-02 Thread Vince
KiwinPA, I live in Zelienople, which is about 35 miles north of
Pittsburgh. Thanks for the advice everyone. I did put in some more Sea
Foam yesterday. As for riding, that's probably out until at least next
week. It's snowing here now and is going to stay that way I think for a
couple days at least. The service manager at the dealership did tell me to
start it every day and let it run for a few minutes to continue trying to
flush it out. Hopefully that will work.

[Nighthawk Lovers] hesitation at low RPM's, sputtering, stalling out at idle

2016-03-01 Thread Vince
I have an 83 Nighthawk 550. Here's my problem. This just started the
other day and had never happened before. When I've got the bike warmed up
and the choke is off, the idle wavers, dropping now and then below
1000rpms. Eventually the bike just stalls. When I pull out their is a
hesitation at low rpms. Once I get up around 2000rpms and out of first
gear nothing seems wrong. I called my dealer and his advice was to drain
the carbs and then add Sea Foam to the tank in case I possible had some
gunk or who knows what running through the lines. I did that yesterday and
it seemed like a miracle. Almost at once the bike was running fine, strong
idle, no hesitation at pull out. Today when I tried to ride it was back to
square one, same problems. So needless to say I'm disappointed. I thought
I had it taken care of, but no dice. I called the dealer again and made
arrangements to take it in the next time we have a decent weather day. He
assumed their must be something sticking in the carbs. Problem is, the
dealership is about 45 miles away. I was really hoping to avoid that if
possible.

I'm no mechanic by any stretch, so monkeying with the carbs, beyond
draining the bowls, is out. I wish I had some ability that way, but I
don't.

Any other ideas for someone as lacking in mechanical skills as me? Just
dumping some cleaner in the tank was easy:) I wish that would have fixed
it.
Thanks
