[nlug] Secondary for Email

2010-09-23 Thread Jack Coats
My home domain, coats.org , sometimes has email returned that is sent to us
and the sender gets a 'non-deliverable' message.

One option is to find a secondary email server. Does anyone around here do
email secondaries cheap or free?

Overall, I like my service, but this is bugging my wife so it becomes a
priority for a solution for me!

Cheap? If you want, I can set you up an account on my own domain,
jperkins.us. Just write me at je...@jperkins.us.

I've used Tuffmail relay in the past when our company email was hosted
on an unreliable comcast business connection. The email will sit on
their servers until your server is back online and ready to receive.

Re: [nlug] Secondary for Email

2010-09-24 Thread Bill Woody
Pardon me for interjecting suggestions without knowing the true nature of
your mail problem. However, I may not have net access for the rest of the
weekend. They said I would but, I have heard it is big problem. Since I do
not know and I want your wife to be happy

1. Coats.org MX is blacklisted by backscatterer.org
If this is the reason your mail is returned you will need to beat your mail
server into submission.

2. The MX IP is not allocated to you.
Some ISPs will not accept email from domains controlling less than a c.
If this is the reason for your problem your upstream provider can make you
very happy. I think any dns wiz controlling a /24 can solve your problem. If
they are unfamiliar with the in-addrs process it may require a little more
effort.

Re: [nlug] Secondary for Email

2010-09-24 Thread Chris McQuistion
I think Bill is onto something, here. If your IP and DNS and MX records are
not all 100% compliant and look above board, then a lot of email servers
won't accept mail sent from you and may not deliver mail to you.

If you could find a mail relay (for both incoming and outgoing), and you
configure to DNS and MX appropriately, that may fix your problems.

Alternatively, you may want to consider having someone else host your domain
email services, rather than deal with the headache of dynamic IP addresses,
weird filtering by various ISP's, etc.

[shameless plug]
I just so happened to be doing a presentation at the Linux Fest, this
weekend, about Google Apps and how you can migrate your email services over
to Google Apps Standard Edition (completely free up to 50 users) and have
Google handle all your mail, calendar, docs, etc.) I've 7 domains over to
Google Apps, so far. 6 of those are using Google Apps Standard Edition
(free) and one is using Google Apps for Education (also free.)
[/shameless plug]

Re: [nlug] Secondary for Email

2010-09-24 Thread Bill Woody
Charlie,

If your mail server is taking a little break and not accepting mail, most
email will sit in cue at the sender's 'normally configured' server and try
to send again.
Personally, if I am the reciever I'd like to know someone sent me a message
which my server didn't process. Tuffmail would be great for this. On the
other hand, if I am the sender I might wish to know the mail is delayed so I
can determine if I want to use an alternative method to contact the person.
On the third hand, I am a little different.

When you were using Tuffmail did it warn of a delay in the mail you sent?

Re: [nlug] Secondary for Email

2010-09-24 Thread charlie
Tuffmail was basically a silent middle man.

I'd say that any administrator running his/her own email server should
know when then internet or power goes out. You're either on the
network or trying to check mail from the outside. When the connection
is back up, you're inbox is flooded with new messages that were all
received by tuffmail during the outage. Luckily most comcast outages
are pretty short.

I get your point about the sender wanting to know a messages was
received right away. I'd say if you are a business, especially in the
IT field, you are better off responding to emails slowly on occasion
than to bounce undeliverables back to potential clients and business
partners.

I'm a big fan of Google Apps and would never recommend putting an
email server on a comcast line in the first place, but sometimes
you've just got to do your best with what you've got.
