[NSP] Re: Tyne Electrical Engineers

2009-12-06 Thread richard.hea...@tiscali.co.uk
Hello Jim,

Thanks for your response to my question in the Newsletter about the
TEE pipers' badge. I'm afraid I don't have any information as to the
size or date of the badge - I only know the information the
auctioneers' website gave.

I've also had some very interesting information from Alan Bailey, who
was a member of the TEE squadron of the 72 RE when it was based at
Gateshead.

At the moment it seems as if the TEE at that time (and probably
throughout its various incarnations) never used Northumbrian small
pipes and that their pipers used GHB exclusively. If the final
collation of information seems worth it, I'll write a summary, but if
there is no connection with NSP then I'll simply state that alone.

Thanks again,

Richard Heard

Whilst we're on military matters, the 2nd battalion of the Royal Regiment of
Fusiliers, which has two sets of nsp, but (I think) no players at present, is
marching through Ashington & Morpeth on Tues (7 Dec).

This is a battalion of the regular army and has just come back from ...well
somewhere out there, anyway..
(probably means the pipes'll be coming in to have the sand cleaned out soon
)
I think this is the one Richard Johnstone was in some years back.

I believe Susan C. and friends play with the 6th battalion (TA) of the same
regiment.

Here ends my entire knowledge of military piping!

Julia

Hi Philip and all,

Well, this video is interesting but possibly not for its musical qualities. The
musette seems fairly out of tune. By 5.45 the pitch is rapidly losing altitude,
finally crashing at 6.30.
This lady plays far better than I can (that's not saying much) but I don't
think she was really ready for a professional performance of that kind. The
performance is pretty hard driven (the harpsichordist too) and I suspect she
was playing at an unduly high pressure with insufficient bag control.

Yes, it's a lovely CD . . . Amazon are listing one copy (used) as of today.
For my taste, though, the best performance of Nicolas Chédeville's arrangement
of 'The Seasons' is by Matthias Loibner playing hurdy-gurdy which is indicated
by Chédeville as the alternative instrument. Calling the instrument a vielle
always improves the sound of any hurdy-gurdy in my view. The truth of that can
be judged here where there are several samples of this recording:
