Re: [League One Champions 2013/4] the Prem

2014-05-09 Thread Paul Hart
I for one have enjoyed all the football ever played in the lower leagues.
We have nothing to prove in the prem ,and like you say have no major
financial pull to keep us there.
It doesnt matter one iota what division we are in as long as the fans are
happy and we make a profit.
This is our love and I knows no division
On 09/05/2014 7:10 PM, Steven Millward millward@gmail.com wrote:

Do you really want to get promoted to the premier league? The last twenty
years have been irritating but we start every season, like next season,
 thinking we could go up.

Is that more satisfying than hoping we stay up?
Is it better to be worried about losing a key game in the chump than to
hope to win games in the prem?

Most things in life are relative. Does it really matter which league we
are in. Given our current owner's financial preference it's unlikely we can
ever do very well in the Prem.

.I never thought I would be able to type those words again

After a swift phone call to Peterborough ticket office, in order to confirm
you could pay on the day, and , that enough spaces were left, I talked
darling daughter into accompanying me to Peterborough. Another phone call
gained me another passenger, in the shape of Lee Morris, ex-listee and
 recently re-patriated from Australia

Having not managed to catch up properly with Lee since his return, this would
give us a good chance to catch up along the M6 and M1 . Nicola comes armed
with the new Killers album, and we also play our pre match ritual CD , This
is War ... 30 seconds to Mars. She is very superstitious is my big girl, but
she hasn't resorted to walking out of doorways backwards as yet, or, munching
hedgehog crisps, ( or whatever we decided was favourite!)

Decent traffic meant that I was soon heading through rural areas towards
Market Harborough, and the two hour drive very quickly slipped by. As I had a
wing man today , I could rely on Lee to spot pubs for a pre match pint as I
waited to turn into London Road and into the car park

We had our first pint in The Peacock, and beckoned in by some very welcoming
constabulary. We then left there to head to the Cherry Tree, finding it full
of Wolves in good voice and humour. Amazing what a couple of wins can do eh?
We left there around 2.30pm for the 10 minute walk to the ground

Its something of a renaissance in the footballing support mechanism for me,
in this League I actually feel the presence of a truer football fan, a more
knowledgeable fan, and there was no inkling of trouble whatsoever.. handing
over two crisp £20 notes gained Nicola and I entry, and Lee and I couldn't
wait to walk up the ramp to see what the terrace looked like..Nicola used one
of the 2 Ladies toilets, ( so she informed me), and whilst waiting for her, I
bumped into fellow list member Mr Phil of the Bradleysorry mate, couldn't
stop chatting longer as I had to dash back to retrieve child in
waiting...will catch up with you longer soon...promise !

We took our spot on the left hand side of the goal about 10 yards up the
terrace , and typical of me, I just had to pick the spot behind the bloke
with a helium filled Mickey Mouse balloon that saw us all ducking and diving
or a better view as the damn thing bobbled around...didn't take long though,
some guy pushed past us with a cigarette lighter and severed the stringI
think the balloon will still be perched in the rafters of the stand

Solbakken the tinkerman rings the changes again, and Stearman, Boukari ,
Edwards and Siguardason are on the bench, Foley, Blake, Peszko and Doumbia
 take their places...

The sun was shining, it's a beautiful day , the pitch looked in great
condition, and being able to stand again to watch a match was fantastic. We
open the game with some nice interplay with Henry , Doumbia and Peszko, the
latter looking more fit than in previous games. Half an hour in, and we are
in total control, Peterborough have had a couple of shots easily saved by the
safe handling of Ikeme, and it was no surprise that Blake earned a penalty
from Doyle's pass to him in the box, the defender making a rash challenge
that took his standing leg. Blake puts ball on spot, and hammers down the
middleeven if the keeper had stood still he still wouldn't have saved it
as that ball crashed in at a decent rate of knots.

You could visibly see the confidence drain from Peterborough, and Doyle was
unlucky to put a 20 yard drive wide of the post. At half time I had a text
from list member John de Wolf, who was at the airport, and I told him not to
worry as we were in total control of a very poor side...( did I really say
that?...must be the medication I'm on)

Now of course, this is Wolves and naturally we have to endure a couple of
scares to keep us on our toes, and in particular Ikeme, who made a couple of
decent saves from angled shots, however for once, our substitutions made a
very positive impact, Sigurdason comes on for Blake, who received a great
ovation for his unselfish running and effortBoukari came on for Peszko,
and their full backs were being pushed further backwards and tiring by the
 minute

With around 10 minutes to go, some sloppy defending allowed Siguardason to
nick the ball form him, he cleverly draws the keeper and clips a beautiful
Keanesque left foot cross shot that nestled superbly in the old onion sack.
Mass delirium, 2-0 up again, and three wins on the bounce since Connor has
left, great finish, and well deserved

Another chorus of shoes off if you love the Wolves it's so funny to see
 this chant with

 Slawomir Peszko completes Wolves deal
 Thursday 9th August 2012, 1:56PM BST.
 image001.jpg
Slawomir Peszko this afternoon completed his loan move to Wolves after a
 delay.
The Poland international midfielder, who has been earmarked as Michael
Kightly’s replacement, had left England after the deal hit a snag.
But in a dramatic twist just before the official photocall at Molineux, news
emerged that the 27-year-old’s season-long agreement from Cologne with a view
to a permanent deal was back on.
Peszko had a medical at Compton on Monday with a view to signing straight
away, but it appeared the goalposts had been moved over the terms of the
agreement and the deal had become more complicated.
Sources said the confusion arose after it appeared there was more than one
agent claiming to represent the player and different figures are being
mentioned by either party, therefore complicating the deal.
Manager Stale Solbakken, who managed Peszko at Cologne last season, said:
“Slawo is a player who can operate on both wings and had a very good first
half to the season last year, setting up a lot of goals for Lukas Podolski.
“To be honest, and I think he would admit this himself, the second half to
the season wasn’t as good and was maybe complicated by trying to get into the
 Polish squad for the Euros.
“But I know the quality that he can offer us including great acceleration.
“He’s also not afraid, so while he may not be the biggest player in stature,
he’s fearless, which is one of his real strengths.
“Like a lot of us, I also think he’ll be looking for revenge for last season,
and he is ready for a new challenge.”
There could be more departures on the way, with Matt Jarvis the subject of
interest from Stoke, Fulham and West Ham, who are understood to be ready to
 step up their chase.

We knew the inevitable was coming, which did soften the blow somewhat, but
fact we’re not a Premier League club anymore hurts. A lot.
Still, when you think about it, there are a few positives to come out of
being in the Championship next season. Like these 10.
 1. We might win a game and/or keep a clean sheet. Wi-nn-ing you say? What’s
that then? Some new fandangled concept from David Cameron’s crazy ideas
machine to make us all forget the recession, the death of the NHS and Michael
Gove’s face? Oh no sorry, I remember – winning. Yes we might actually win a
football match, what a notion that is. Or keep a clean sheet more regularly
than once every eight months. If we’re lucky our first home win of 2012 will
be in August. Let’s face it, after winning 27 matches in our promotion
season, and just 25 since then, it’ll be nice not to be in a relegation
 battle. Presumably.
 2. The leg room at Molineux will be plentiful. With just 12.000 season
tickets in a 30,000 stadium, there’ll be room to spare. If you don’t like the
annoying bloke sitting near you, just pick another seat. Oh and the shiny new
North Bank will look lovely. Well, if they can sort out the wonky ‘S’ on
‘Wolves’ which looks like it’s been drawn by Amy Childs after three bottles
 of Lambrini, that is.
 3. Referees will be biased towards us, not against. Steve Finnan’s handball
for Portsmouth, red cards for Karl Henry (against Arsenal), Nenad Milijas
(against Arsenal) and Sebastien Bassong (against Arsenal), Tim Howard,
Jonathan Woodgate and Frank Lampard not being sent off, the trial by media
after Karl Henry versus Joey Barton, etc, etc. Anyone remember so many
injustices in the 20 years or so in the Championship preceding that? Exactly.
 4. Far fewer diving cheats. Probably the worst thing about the Premier
League. To be fair to the refs, their life is made ten times more difficult
by the diving, histrionics and constant ear-bashing, mostly from the foreign
element of the Premier League. And Ashley Young.
 5. Don’t have to put up with the ignominy of being last on Match of the Day.
Think of all the hours we’ve wasted sitting through an hour of Match of the
Day, waiting for our 10-minute snippet at the end. You’re talking, what, 30
hours a season maybe, which works out at nearly four of your human days over
three years. Use next season’s extra time wisely, perhaps by taking up a new
hobby, or maybe by solving the riddle of what on earth Richard Stearman is
keeping under that bandage on his arm.
 6. We’ll have a new manager. Yes that’ll be nice won’t it? And also…
 7. It won’t be Terry Connor. I couldn’t feel sorrier for him if he was a
two-month-old Labrador puppy with three legs and a woof impediment. But he’s
just not manager material, is he? Plus I don’t think I can bear to watch
another of his heart-wrenching post-match interviews, with his lips pursed so
tightly together they look like they’re about become stuck, like Keanu Reeves
in The Matrix. And for goodness sake don’t let Geoff Shreeves anywhere near
him after the Wigan game. “Terry I can confirm Wolves have finished bottom
and you’ve got the worst managerial record in Premier League history. And a
bird has just defecated on your head, I can confirm that too Terry. After 13
years you’re probably going to get the sack too, aren’t you? And your
reputation’s in tatters. How do you feel about that? Terry?”
 8. Saturday 3pm kick-off times. And a few on Tuesday nights as well. Forget
this Sunday 2pm and Saturday 12.05pm malarkey.
 9. We can all hide under a rock for a season. After the most humiliating few
months at Wolves in living memory, I’d rather everyone just stop talking
about us now. The whole world and his wife knows how bad we are. Next season,
just tell your sofa-bound Man United-supporting mates that we’re coasting the
Championship, no matter where we actually are in the league.

I think we're stuffed and will be lucky to win a game. I don't really rate

year for Liverpool contributed 2 goals and 1 assist in 37 games. Also with
no Rooney for the first two games we could be homeward bound before he

Depressing times for England. At least things are looking much rosier for

Morgan/Moxey are pursuing the 'young and hungry' ethos without recognition
for more of a balance between youth and experience. We had the situation
where we wasted alot of money on players coming to the end of their careers
that inspired the famous 'golden tit' outburst and now seem to have the
complete reverse of this. I think we need a balance between youth and
experience and I reckon we got it right for a while when we had the likes of
Ince, Irwin and Rae playing with players like Naylor (seemed erratic at the
time but a dream compared to our current left back situation), Lescott and
Murray. The young and hungry policy suits MM's 'business' goals and they see
these players as an investment/appreciating asset. Surely an older player can
be seen as a sound investment though if they help bring success on the pitch
which in turn transalates to increassed money off it.

I reckon we have the capital to spend but we won't spend the wages. We agree
fees with clubs but then it falls apart on personal terms e.g. Scott Dann.
 There must be others

Albion do the reverse. A lot of their side was bought cheap but they pay
more than us in wages. As transfer fees are amortized over the life of the
contract maybe we should change our approach and spend more of the total
 cost on wages than transfers.

The problem is that you then run up against the young and hungry policy
(which is another Morgan backed idea). Young players cost more. If we want
to do that then we'll have to take a gamble on older players towards the end
 of their career.

about to do a Portsmouth but I think there's room to be a little less
cautious. Also, be more realistic about who we try and buy - if we have 5
million to spend on a player, don't spend time haggling trying to get 10
million rated players who inevtibly go to someone in the market for an 8
million pound player. We seem to lose out on so many players through this.

I'm not sure Moxey is to blame, to be fair to him. His instructions come
from the owner and that is to run the club as a business and not make a loss.

Unfortunately I think success and profit are incompatible in the Prem when
almost everyone else loses money, and most managers will know this. This
might change if we can hold out until FFP but I'm not convinced.

Agree that they could offer a manager 20k a week for the rest of the season
with a 1m bonus if we stay up. Would be well worthwhile and good money for
anyone. The value to the club would be immense compared to a million quid.
The choice of manager would be very different if we went down to if we stay

I look at the current situation and think what value do you put on
Premiership survival? The money its worth has to warrant a sizeable
investment to try and stay up. The way I see it we have 2 realistic options:

 - get someone in on a short term contract who's a real motivator and can get

In terms of the number of names being thrown about I take this as a sign that
there's not much being 'leaked' from Molineux and that it's the press who

The fact that one of the 'official' bits of info to come out is that they are

Here's how I see it playing out.
New manager appointed who starts playing different players.
Realises after a few games that the players on the fringe of the team were no
good after all and goes back to the original players that Mick used to play.
Wolves sink into the relegation zone and players start lining up a move for
next season having no loyalty to Morgan or the club anymore.
Wolves get relegated and sell the best players, some to Mick who has just got
 Leeds promoted via the playoffs.
Manager has no idea or stomach for getting promotion on a limited budget
 imposed by Morgan.
Manager gets sacked in November with Wolves in the bottom half.
Morgan starts taking money out of the club and then sells it on whilst
appointing and dismissing a range of different managers
Wolves flirt with the bottom end of the division and eventually get relegated
after the new owners are shown to be insolvent
Mick takes Leeds to a cup win.

I intend to criticize the new manager from day one, regardless of the facts.

I did point out that new managers get a short honeymoon which is followed by
a revertion to the previous position. The only problem is you have to sack
your manager each season. Maybe it will work for us this season.

Who would be willing to stick a big bet on that before we appoint a new
manager in support of the fact that the manager has no effect on the teams
performance? I'm quite intrigued by Steve's theory now that Mick has gone.

Also, now that Mick has gone am I allowed to slag him off again?

Not only has Mick got one game plan that he refuses to (is unable to?)
change but he has one script for his post match interviews. From his
interview after our heroic loss to Liverpool:

'...they are a great bunch of lads and work their socks off for me, for the
 club and for everybody'.

'...we've done alright in parts of the game but that's the silver lining in
 a dark cloud'.

It's the same script he read from at Sunderland too from memory.

 Midfield totally dominated by Liverpool.

Very lucky to be level. MM needs to make some changes at half time or else
 we will lose.

But as Frimpong is out for 3 months we've lost any bite or drive in
midfield. Atleast we won't have to watch Henry for a few weeks.

I don't care about the fact we played brilliantly in the first half
(which we certainly did). At the end of the day football is a results
 game and
 yet
again we haven't got a result. We're now 2nd from bottom with a
worrying gap opening up between us and the safety positions. Not
 looking good at

Here's some more interesting data in the table below.

League rank is the position that the team finished in the league
Wage rank is the position forecast by wages

You'll notice that wages are a great predicitor of league position.
10 teams are within one position of their prediction.
15 teams are within two positions of their prediction
18 teams are within three positions of their prediction.

I've sorted the table by the last column which is the difference between the
league and wage ranking. The teams at the top are the ones that seemingly
 outperformed their resources.

You'll notice all the good managers are near the top of the list:
 Hodgson - Pulis - Redknapp - Ferguson - McCARTHY

The way I see if you can say that either management is important and Mick is
a good manager or management is unimportant.

There's no room to say that managment is important and Mick is a bad manager
because the facts don't support it.

 Team..League Rank...Wage Rank...Difference

I don't think we will survive this season but what is the point of keeping MM

they've spent a couple of pounds to get the team capable of playing like

Average performance but still getting a point away.

That's the hallmark of League Champions.

Shouldn't really complain about picking up another point away from home.
Performance wasn't much chop with a number of our key players performing well

Not since Platini was at the Mol for talks has there been such a positive
period of news, happy days!! Is this really the Wolves we know and love?
After almost 30 years of relative doom and gloom maybe it is finally time for
 “out of darkness cometh light”?

Sorry to put the rose tinted spectacles on and tempt fate, I know it will all
 come crashing down soon.

Very much looking forward to Saturday.

 Cheers
