Hi David,

it happens already in figure 6! By writing

path left;
...
path right;

you have redefined internal things left and right. With e. g.

  %draw spring block left
  path xleft;
  xleft:=(2,9)--(3,9)--(3,11)--(2,11)--cycle;
  xleft:=xleft scaled u;
  stripe_path_a(withcolor black)(draw)
  xleft withcolor white;
  draw (3u,9u)--(3u,11u);

  %draw spring block right
  path xright;
  xright:=(17,9)--(18,9)--(18,11)--(17,11)--cycle;
  xright:=xright scaled u;
  stripe_path_a(withcolor black)(draw)
  xright withcolor white;
  draw (17u,9u)--(17u,11u);

it works.

Hello,
I'm just switching from LaTeX to ConTeXt. Is there already a module with
similar functionalities as the typearea¹ package that comes with LaTeX?

¹ typearea comes with KOMA-Script and permits to automatically calculate
the right margins with respect to some typographic rules.

   \definesynonyms[glossar][explanation][\infull]
   \glossar [ZOPE] {\em Zope} {Web Applikationsserver}
   Is there a better way to style words consistently? I find it
   difficult to distinguish between \ZOPE\ and \ZOPE, especially for
   the possible later translation from XML.
you can try: {\ZOPE} for both, so between {\ZOPE} and {\ZOPE},

technically a lookahead for space is possible but there are border cases ...

in XML, when you use

between meaning label=ZOPE/ and meaning label=ZOPE/, with:

  \defineXMLsingular [meaning] [label=] {\infull{\XMLop{label}}}

there is no space problem (the \ is needed to prevent eating up the space,
which is a result from the way tex parses \COMMANDS.

2. In the example there is an indirection for the section definitions.

   \definehead [Topic]   [chapter]
   \definehead [Nopic]   [title]
   Later on the newly defined headers are styled. But they are used as
   the only headers throughout the document. So why not style the
   original ones?
hm, a matter of taste, a topic is not a chapter; imagine a quality
assurance manual:

  \Procedure \WorkInstruction \Process

is then more meaningfull than chapter section subsection (also, the
indirectness enables you to reassign levels)

3. I have defined colored header bars in the following ways.

\setuphead
  [subject, Subject,section]
  [command=\mysec,
   page=no,
   continue=no,
   style={\ss\bs},
   color=black]
\def\mysec#1#2{\framed[width=\textwidth,
   corner=round,
   radius=0.05em,
   background=color,
   backgroundcolor=HKS5,
   framecolor=HKS5]{\startnarrower[1*left,1*right] #2 \hfill #1
\stopnarrower}}
   They are spanning the complete textwidth. What I now want is to
   have a smaller textwidth, but the bars should remain broader, as
   broad as the header and footer lines. Any hints?
I don't understand what you want, maybe:

\def\mysec#1#2%
  {\framed
[width=\textwidth,
 corner=round,
 radius=0.05em,
 background=color,
 backgroundcolor=HKS5,
 align=normal,
 strut=no,
 framecolor=HKS5]
{\setuptabulate[before=,after=]
 \starttabulate[|p(5cm)|r|]\NC#2\NC#1\NC\NR\stoptabulate}}
or

\def\mysec#1#2%
  {\bTABLE
   \bTR \bTD #2 \eTD \bTD #1 \eTD \eTR
   \eTABLE}
4. How to deal with metadata, like author, version, last modified and
   so. Would you recommend to use buffers for this? This information
   is probably used on the title page and the footer of each page.
\setvariables
  [category]
  [something=whatever]
and then

\getvariable{category}{something}

Ok, now a real question. I want to style the actual requirements in
form of a papercard, whith their actual status at the top. This would
be an new definition with 2 or 3 arguments. But the requirements
should also be enumerated. How can one build such an environment?
Derive somehow from \defineenumeration?
---
|ReqNbr  | Title   | status | date|
---
| longer text with paragraphs and pagebreaks |
---
Sorry for the ascii-art (cough :-). These cards should be able to span
more than one page. In the light of this a table with running heads
would also be an option, right?
Thanks for this great package, it is a lot of fun and full of gems.
something

\long\def\StartMyCard#1#2#3#4#5\StopMyCard
  {\bTABLE

I've been struggling through, trying to learn Unicode in ConTeXt. It's

good

There are a few weird things that made it difficult to learn, and I was
wondering if someone could help explain why things are the way they are.
In unic-ini:
\chardef\utfunihashmode=0 % 1 = enabled
Actually, if I understand things correctly, '1' means disabled, which
is what I preferred, having not yet created any unicode vectors. So the
internal documentation there seems wrong, and I would argue the default
case (0) makes it harder for beginners.
hm, did you look at the unic-001 etc files? the trick is in fast and efficient
expansion without the need to define lots of named glyphs
More confusingly, in font-uni:
forget about that one, although it's called unicode, it's actually a
mechanism for
the many vectors derived from unicode / related to unicode but not entirely
i.e. cjk fonts

\def\enableunicodefont#1%
  {\definefontsynonym[\s!Unicode][\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!file}]%
   \def\unicodescale {\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!schaal}}%
   \def\unicodeheight{\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!hoogte}}%
   \def\unicodedepth {\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!diepte}}%
   \def\unicodedigits{\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!conversie}}%
   \def\handleunicodeglyph   {\getvalue{\??uc#1\c!commando}}%
%%% NEXT LINE
   \enableregime[unicode]% the following \relax's are realy needed
   \doifvalue{\??uc#1\c!interlinie}\v!ja\setupinterlinespace\relax
   \getvalue{\??uc#1\c!commandos}\relax}
The \enableregime[unicode] runs in direct opposition with the
\enableregime[utf] that normally goes at the start of (some of my)
documents. As it stands, with the regime hard-coded, users have to put an
\enableregime[utf] *after* the font declaration. That's awkward.
so, don't use that mechanism, stick to the utf mechanism

The last proposed change/complaint is back in unic-ini, and came from my
attempts to match the main body font with the unicode font.
\def\utfunifontglyph#1%
  {\xdef\unidiv{\number\utfdiv{#1}}%
   \xdef\unimod{\number\utfmod{#1}}%
   \ifnum#1[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 \unicodeasciicharacter\unimod
 \char\unimod % \unicodeascii\unimod
   \else\ifcsname\@@univector\unidiv\endcsname
 \csname\doutfunihash{\unidiv}{#1}\endcsname
   \else % so, these can be different fonts !
 \unicodeglyph\unidiv\unimod % no \uchar (yet)
   \fi\fi}
Basically, I'd like to use the \unicodeasciicharacter hook with this
definition:
\def\unicodeasciicharacter{\uchar{0}}

(I'm not certain the above is release-quality code, but I've been testing
it with a stripped down \utfunifontglyph that should be functionally
equivalent.)
play with it and we'll see

Working with the unicode code makes me appreciate that it's really
powerful part of ConTeXt. Thanks, Hans!
how about the following:

there are many font encodings around but none is really complete enough to
deal with basic unicode (0/1/2 range)

why not define a new font encoding with characters only so that we can have
as many chars as needed in a 0-255 vector, all those
special characters (registered, and so) are (1) used seldom, (2) not
related to hyphenation and kerning; it is also a way to get
rid of some 'ligatures' like --- becoming an emdash (in context and xml we
can conformtably directly call symbols, and these may
come from a different instance of the font

Fptex caches the kpathsea lists in shared memory, which is a big

one caveat being that you cannot run two tex jobs at the same time, each

Hans
No special requirements, I guess. Mainly a basic setup with readable
fonts, sane titling setup, that kind of thing. I've tried setting up my
own, but am not espeically pleased by the results. It's a hard thing to
quantify, I'll admit. A part of the problem is that I'm still learning
CoNTexT so am unfamiliar with (some) of the capabilies available.

My ideas for layout/semantics go something like this.
 Pointers on how to acheive this would be most welcome.
One file to act with all the layout commands.
One file for each class periods notes
(I'll write a little ruby or python scribt to geneate the appropriate
\inputs in the main file)

In the main file:

Table of Contents (Chapters *only*, clickable links)

In each chapter TOC: for the chapter

At end: An index of all terms that are \index'ed.

All references should be hotlinkable.

I also plan to write wrappers around things, so I can write something
like:

\formula{Fibonacci sequence}{$f(1) = 1$, $f(2) = 1$, $f(n) = f(n-1) +
f(n-2)$}

and have that generate a figure and index entry. A list of formulas as
an appendix would be REALLY slick.

I basically want have about the highest possible text/TeX ratio, since
I'm typing these notes up in class on my iBook, so the more that's
automated the better.

Actually, if I had the setup for something like the ConTeXt manual,
that would be a very good start.

Thanks!
