[NTG-context] Setting up layout - basic questions

2005-02-07 Thread cormullion
Hi there. Iâm a newcomer to ConTeXt, and Iâm so far really impressed with
the power and flexibility I now have access to. Iâd be grateful for a few
tips - Iâve been reading the documentation over the last few days, and my
headâs getting full. Please excuse me if these questions are obvious.

I want to make headings in a sans serif font, such as Helvetica, and keep the
body text in serif font (such as Times). (I use these font names loosely, I
have no idea which fonts I can actually use, since I canât get XeTeX working
yet.) I know that I should do something like this:

\setuphead
[chapter]
[number=yes,
style=\ss]

\setuphead
[section]
[number=no,
style=\ss]

but the sizes of the different levels of heading are lost... So something like
16pt for chapter, 14pt for section, 12 point for subsection?

Also, is it generally possible to make all the headings start at the left
margin, with everything else (eg paragraphs, lists, etc) indented? Eg:

Chapter X
   Paragraph
Section X
   Paragraph
Subsection y
   Paragraph

Thanks for any pointers. Iâm more of a FrameMaker user up to now, so I may
not yet be thinking the ConTeXt way. :-)

Hallo Hans,
I save time to install new release and start to test. Good news:
1) The hyphen code can be processed with cont-cz.
Bad news:
1) \c!compoundhyphen atc. are not defined in cont-con.tex
2) it preserves long-variant hyphen for \cz case (no difference between
\en and \cz):

I want to compare Czech accented chars in lm and csr. I started with the
bellow code, but no criticalchars is visible in both cases. Log is
enclosed. What are the proper family/typescript names?

Thanks for help.

Out of curiosity, are the old-style numerals from CM (cmmi*, I presume)
in any shapes other than roman? I had the impression there were no real
italic or bold variants, but I could be wrong (and would love to know
where to find them, in that case!).
There is a bold version for the 10pt case only (cmmib10), and I created a
font switch \ob to use old-style bold at any bold size when necessary (no
optcal scaling). \bf still switches to the optically-scaled bold, while
\ob uses cmmib10's numerals:

Is there some way how to close doc being opened in AR when running texexec?
--autopdf should do that (make sure that the first time you do that, the doc os

Out of curiosity, are the old-style numerals from CM (cmmi*, I presume)
in any shapes other than roman? I had the impression there were no real
italic or bold variants, but I could be wrong (and would love to know
where to find them, in that case!).

No, but I use old-style numerals as default (as it should be in much of
the liberal arts and
critical scholarship). There are also a few accents that I have to make
on the fly with (amateurish) macros, including the shorter bar over
lower case and some others. lm should provide all of this by default.
do you have a list of them:

Until lm develops further, can you make a virtual lm font (with
typescripts etc) that defaults to old-style numerals? Then I can still use
my accent macros (which of course defeats the whole raison d'etre of
lm;->) till lm fixes/implements these.

Also note that I'll explicitly credit Jacko/lm in the colophon of the next
issue of my journal if we can fix this.

[NTG-context] alpha + magazine

2005-02-07 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,
I uploaded a new alpha, in addition to previous changes:
- default latin modern in ec encoding instead of default encoding
- substantial speedup of typescript loading (when configured as such)
- a couple of small fixes related to switching to latin modern
there is also a new mag-0009.pdf file, discribing how to use platform fonts etc
etc,

Re: [NTG-context] permissions in texmf/scripts/context/*

2005-02-07 Thread Thomas A . Schmitz
Thanks for clearing this up. I was looking into texmfstart for
precisely this reason: I have a linux (gentoo) system on another
partition of my OS X box, and even though everything is exactly the
same (except the binaries, of course), I always get "texexec.pl not
found" when I run "texexec something." When I invoke "perl
DARNED_LONG_PATH_TO_TEXEXEC.PL something," everything works. TEXMF.CNF
and diretory structure is identical. Well, no big deal, I'll replace
the texexec stub like you suggested.

All best

if one uses texmfstart, you only need to set the permission of
texmfstart in the bin path; nowadays, my calls to script in the bin
paths look like:

texexec ->
#!/bin/sh
texmfstart texexec.pl $@
that way i'm independent of anything funny that will happen with
kpsewhich (since i only need to adapt texmfstart); think of recent
changes in the script path and scriptpath location method;

btw, you can use texmfstart for more things, like
  texmfstart --direct scite kpse:texmf.cnf
this will launch scite and open the texmf.cnf file used by your
current installation.

 Beste ConTeXt gebruikers,

what does the following file produce? (log file etc)
\setupoutput[pdftex]
\usetypescript[berry][ec]
\setupencoding[ec]
\usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding]
\setupbodyfont[palatino]
\starttext

this is the result of the transition from low level dutch to low level english,
it looks like your cont.sys.tex does not match the version of context;
interestingly it looks like a new cont-sys and an old context;

is it possible to de-install and re-install?

Hello David,
It looks like you have unpacked the updated files, but have not
regenerated the format files. I'm not sure how to do that under
OsX, but a linux user would type:

$ su
# texexec --make --all
Hope this helps.
