[NTG-context] setuptabulate
What is with tabulation? I use it because I find it handy, but the setuptabulate seems not working. \starttext \setuptabulate[align=middle,rulethickness=1pt] \starttabulate[|c|c|] \NC abc \NC xyz \NC\NR \NC def \NC uvw \NC\NR \stoptabulate \stoptext This gives NO alignment and NO rule. Hi all,
Due to the nature of the font I am using (which has horrendous
looking combining diacritics), I have to call the unicodeglyphs
directly through the \uchar command. Which works fine for the regular
face. But I am unable to get the italic glyphs via the same method.
So {\it \uchar{1}{01}} renders the 'normal' regular glyph.
Could somebody help me out?
Is amacron (ā) the character that you want to use? Which font do you
use (and which encoding and regime)? Do you use pdftex or any other
platform (XeTeX perhaps)?
You don't need to put silly \uchar{}{} definitions in the text, I'm
sure there is a more elegant way to do it. If the placement of the
macron doesn't suit your font, you can redefine it and get rid of
those \uchar-s. You can still use unicode or whatever input encoding
(regime) you need (Latin4/6/7?). Send a complete minimal example to
the list, including font definitions.

PS: if you need to use amacron/Amacron, you can try to be more
annoying on the list. You would need another encoding then (enco-el,
dense encoding) which has to be finished once in the near future.

[NTG-context] A font problem with the stand-alone Windows distribution
A font problem -- again. I am so sorry. I try to use the URW postscript fonts with the stand-alone mswincontext.zip distribution. Everything else seems to work fine, but when I say: \usetypescript[adobekb][\defaultencoding] \usetypescript[pos][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[pos,11pt] I get a bunch of complaints from Acroread, and it uses Helvetica everywhere. (The same happens with Postscript instead of pos.) The reason is rather clear, the log has the following rows: Warning: pdfetex.exe (file ptmb8y): Font ptmb8y at 79 not found Warning: pdfetex.exe (file pcrr8y): Font pcrr8y at 55 not found Warning: pdfetex.exe (file pcrr8y): Font pcrr8y at 86 not found etc. So, the system tries to find the Adobe fonts which I do not have. Their URW counterparts are included in the stand-alone distribution, but the system does not seem to look for the u* fonts. Actually, I thought it was a good solution. Let me explain my current
project.
I am typesetting a Festschrift including subjects on Indo-European
(Sanskrit, Hittite, Old Greek, etc.), Slavic, Sino-Tibetan, and
Japanese made up from 65 xml-files with decimal character entities.
All the glyphs needed for these articles (save some silly ones like e
with hungarian umlaut, m with subdot) are included in a font
(Palatino Linostar) which was developed to accompany an etymological
database (http://starling.rinet.ru/main.html) project devoted to
proving or disproving the nostratic theory (all languages in the
world originate from one source). The font was developed over the
years and is no longer fully unicode-compliant.
So my solution was to map the cmap hexadecimal values via the decimal
entities to the \uchar command in a separate configuration file.
For example:
\defineXMLentity[257]{\uchar{1}{1}} % amacron % LATIN SMALL LETTER A
WITH MACRON % 0x0101
I need about 2546 of them for all the special glyphs.
This solution works fine, except the fact that I am unable to typeset
the glyphs in bold and italic.
Maybe this solution is a bit cumbersome. I am open for better solutions.

Aleph in ConTeXt: A Guide to the Perplexed (with apologies to Maimonides)
Dear gang,
I have been helping a number of ConTeXt users off-list with getting aleph
running, along with right-to-left typesetting. The following notes are
meant to help ConTeXt users who want to do RL typesetting, particularly
Arabic script, get started with a minimal of fuss, as well as point to
more advanced applications. This is much more complete than my last post
(and hence the wiki as well)
I hope that someone can take this and add it to the wiki. I can then edit
the wiki myself and improve the clarity, etc. Perhaps I will also write an
augmentation to Hans' Aleph manual later.
I also have a support utlities package that could be placed on the wiki or
somewhere else. Is there anyone who can upload it for me?

I. Introduction.
Aleph is a typesetting engine derived from Omega and eTeX. Reasons for
Aleph:
1. ConTeXt depends on the eTeX extensions, and even LaTeX now defaults to
pdfeTeX;
2. Omega provides a nice foundation for multilingual typesetting with
large (256) character sets, including large virtual fonts, but a stable,
dependable version has not been a priority with its developers.
a. In particular, the RL-LR code works excellently for the most part
(minor bugs, easy to work around).
b. Omega 1.15 was the last relatively stable bugfix version, as far as
usability is concerned.
3. Some users need a dependable LR-RL TeX engine NOW.
Aleph weds Omega 1.15 and eTeX201, removes some extraneous stuff, and
fixes a few bugs. I use it for production purposes. It uses dvipdfmx for
pdf production, and can take advantage of most of ConTeXt's capabilities.
Giuseppe Bilotta has done virtually all of the development work.
In addition to large character sets Aleph inherits the filter sequence
mechanism for script processing (extension ocp, compile from text-editable
otp). So you can script whatever input encoding you like to whatever
output font encoding you like. It is mechanism powerful enough to do
contextual analysis of Arabic script for example, but not powerful enough
for things like vertical glyph positioning for cursive scripts and the
like.
Aleph, inheriting from Omega, provides many ready-to-go filters, using a
Times Roman like font for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts. The ConTeXt
module for this setup is called Gamma (m-gamma.tex); this is a port of the
Lambda (i.e., LaTeX) style files to ConTeXt. The font typescript is called
type-omg.
II. Installing.
This install is based on the stand-alone ConTeXt for Win32 package:

Users of MiKTeX and other OS's will need to adjust the following
instructions to their own setups.
1. Make sure you have a very recent version of ConTeXt that supports the
engine path mechanism. This mechanism allows texexec to manage two, e.g.,
cont-en.fmt files at once, one in
C:\ConTeXt\tex\texmf-mswin\web2c\aleph
and one in
C:\ConTeXt\tex\texmf-mswin\web2c\pdfetex
How recent, you ask? Just be safe and get the latest-)
2. Some configuration points:
a. Make sure you have the following line in
ConTeXt\tex\texmf-local\context\config\texexec.ini
set to true, viz.,
set UseEnginePath to true
b. In
texmf-local\web2c\texmf.cnf,
texmf-local\web2c\context.cnf, and
texmf\web2c\texmf.cnf,
comment this line as follows
%extra_mem_bot.context= 200
otherwise aleph will crash under some conditions, like overfull boxes and
the like... The XeTeX developer found the source to this bug, and a fix;
hopefully Giuseppe will get to it-))
3. Get the omega support files:

Dump it as C:\ConTeXt add it to your PATH, or add a CALL setuptex C:\ConTeXt\tex to you batch files, editor, whatever, before invoking texexec read the README and u're good to go. Just need to be clear on which TeX system gets called, which is what setuptex does. Even when I need LaTeX, I just dump the XemTeX files into this tree. \MySwitch \uchar... \it ...
The uchar command is a wrapper around a handler; currently only chinese
and japanese handlers are defined, and you need a defaultcase. The
\defineunicodefont installs a more advanced handler named
\insertunicodeglyph which picks up the characters from the font ranges
as you do. So, replace Sans and SansItalic by your alternatives
UnicodeRegular and UnicodeItalic
(btw this mechanism is rather complex because it needs to handle (1)
fake unicode, i.e. you can define remappers, (2) unicode, (3) utf as
input encoding, (4) special handlers, (5) . ) Even i get lost in the
code -)
