 Hello,

after Patrick Gundlach convinced me at DANTE 2006 to switch the small
scientific magazine project I'm currently working on for a client from
LaTeX co ConTeXt, I'm now preparing a sample document for my client to
convince him, and for that I need your help :)

I've spent the last two weeks getting in touch wich context and I must
say I'm really impressed, nice work!

First challenge is that the document fonts are URW GaramondNo8 for the
text and Bitstream Futura (really: Bitstream Geometric 211) for the
headings. I managed quite easyly to install them with texfont and the
instructions from the contextgarden wiki[1] and compile the sample
document with either font family. But now I'm trying to (1) understand
the typescript files and (2) build an own typescript putting those fonts
together. This is what I have so far:

 \usetypescriptfile[type-ugm]
 \usetypescriptfile[type-bfu]

 \starttypescript [ifa][texnansi]
\definetypeface [ifa] [rm] [serif] [garamond] [default]
 ~[encoding=texnansi]
\definetypeface [ifa] [ss] [sans] [futura] [default]
 ~[encoding=texnansi]
\definetypeface [ifa] [tt] [mono] [modern] [default]
 ~[encoding=texnansi]
 \stoptypescript

 \usetypescript[ifa][texnansi]
 %\ifa
 \starttext

 \ss
 \input knuth

 \rm
 \input knuth
 \stoptext

(type-ugm.tex and type-bfu.tex are attached). What happens is: When I
compile the file a is it is set in computer modern. To enable my fonts I
have to comment out \starttypescript, \stoptypescript and \usetypescript
and enable \ifa. How do I activate my fonts via a typescript.
you can use \setuptypescript[...], but best is to just use:

\setupbodyfont[ifa]

since the typescript mechanism is a layer on top of the more low level
traditional-texie font mechanism

so, you can have several typefaces alongside and switch between them; this is
one of the reasons that typefaces exist: they enable you to construct
combinations and use many of them in a document (mixed font families, math
styles, etc)

What is the preferd way to deal with math in contex?

 MathML (xml-way) or
\*formula (tex-way, from my point of view)

I do not know the pros and cons of both methods, but I personally find
the mathML too verbose to type in. If you have an editor generating
the mathml for you, it is a different matter. But if you prefer to
type in your formulas, the tex way is much easier to input.

you can also think of a mixture: content mathml for nicely structured
formulas and a simple tex mode for inline math:

\defineXMLargument[tm]{\XMLtexmath}

\def\XMLtexmath#1{\bgroup\setnormalcatcodes\scantokens{\mathematics{#1}\ignorespaces}\egroup}

\startbuffer[test]
Sometimes it makes sense to use simple math, as in: tme=mc^2/tm.
\stopbuffer

\processXMLbuffer[test]

(i will provide a 'calcmath' filter once luatex is there)

[NTG-context] Question and Answer blocks -- by section

2006-03-20 Thread David Arnold
All,

Almost what I want. But I just want to unhide the blocks for the
section at the end of each section. What is the best strategy here.
Should I just make a set of blocks with different names for each
section?

You can check out the manual sources from the svn respository
svn://ctx.pragma-ade.nl/manuals

Is there a read-only account available?
When doing a check out, how much data will be transferred?
(So I can estimate the download time (or reconsider doing it ;- ))

If you prefer to browse them online they are available at
http://context.aanhet.net/svn/

I downloaded a bunch of files from that location. Just a quick
question: Have they been updated since the 2001 edition?

Seems to me, context manual, mathml, and fonts have been updated.

[NTG-context] MathML test suite feedback

2006-03-20 Thread nico

Hello,

I've compiled with ConTeXt a large excerpt from the MathML 2.0 Test Suite
(http://www.w3.org/Math/testsuite) and I encountered the following
problems (test cases attached):

- Percentage in tag attributes are not correctly handled (seem to be seen
as tex comments) and make context crashes.

- mfenced with empty separators doesn't work.
- Using different brackets in mo doesn't work.
- I don't know if it's a local install problem, but some fonts are not
found when using UTF encoding.

This said, only 6% (41/657) of the tests fails, which is an excellent
rate. BTW, if someone is interested in the big context file containing all
the tests, just tell me. I can also send the perl script used to generate
this doc.

BG

i assume that you ran with \usemodule[mathml]

how does \usemodule[newmml] perform? that one should work better with utf

if you prepare a file with 'failures' i can have a look at it

\startXMLdata does not change the catcode of % and it grabs an argument;
could be a low priority feature request ( to be added to the
wiki/collector)

best use:

\startXMLbuffer

\stopXMLbuffer

\processXMLbuffer

(the fontsize is not supported (does not make sense in a regular
typesetting context)

Thanks for the advice. Indeed it is shorter and much more elegant. But in
this case the test was automatically generated.

Actually the code is different because the XML namespace does not seem
correctly handled.
For example, this does not compile:

\startXMLdata
   mml:math xmlns=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML;
 applydivide/ci1/cici6/ci/apply
   /mml:math
\stopXMLdata

But this compiles:

\startXMLdata
   math
 applydivide/ci1/cici6/ci/apply
   /math
\stopXMLdata

That's not possible with \setuppagenumbering alone.

Try the Logo approach:
\setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided, location=]
\definelogo[Pagina][text][rightmargin][command={\framed
{\pagenumber}}, state=start]

or have a look at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Letter_style and its
use of Layers and setups.

[NTG-context] Install mess (Type3 Fonts)

2006-03-20 Thread nico

I know, I shouldn't have updated the context distrib, but I did... Of
course, I add problems with missing fonts, and installed the lm fonts from
CTAN. Now texexec can compile again.

But the fonts used are now horrible, producing fuzzy letters. Can anyone
give me some hints to fix this buggy install?

If it can be of some help here is a log of a program I compiled.

[NTG-context] Feature Request: mathmatrix enhancement

2006-03-20 Thread Aditya Mahajan
Hi,

Is it possible to have allow math matrix column alignments to be
configurable, on the lines of align={left, left} of \startalign.
I want to be albe to say

\startformula
  \startmatrix[align={right,left}]
   \NC x \NC = a + d \NR
   \NC y \NC = d \NR
  \stopmatrix
\stopformula

to give me
  x = a + d
  y = d

This is a contrived example. The actual equation that I want to type
is

\startformula
   \text{Let }{\cal R} = \bigcup_{P_{X_1},P_{X_2}} \left\{
   (R_1, R_2) :
   \startmatrix[distance=0.1em]
 \NC \hfill R_1 \NC I(X_1 ; Y \mid X_2) \hfill \NR
 \NC \hfill R_2 \NC I(X_2 ; Y \mid X_1) \hfill \NR
 \NC \hfill R_1 + R_2 \NC I(X_1,X_2 ; Y) \hfill \NR
   \stopmatrix\right\}
\stopformula

All these manual hfills look ugly.

Is matrix the wrong way to go about this? Should we rather have a
aligned environment like amsmath? Or is there a simple alternative
that I have overlooked?

Thanks
Aditya
