Context on texlive is updated once a year. It is a somewhat elaborate
process because texlive wants some stuff removed from the distribution
and quite some other stuff has to be relocated. I prefer not to do
that except when it is absolutely necessary.

The next texlive will normally have the latest stable context from

I use texfont, as in mkii.

mkdir /texmf/fonts/data/vendor/collection

and copy the files there

then run luatools --generate

mkiv reads otf files as well as afm files, so it's ok for type1 as well
(mkiv treats them as wide fonts and remaps them to unicode, so texfont
is not needed at all)

there is no need to distribute font files over all those subpaths of
/fonts and no map file is needed either

[NTG-context] [Dev-luatex] beta 0.20.2 released

2007-12-17 Thread Taco Hoekwater

Hi all,

I have just uploaded the archives for luatex 0.20.2. This
is a simple bugfix release for last week's beta:

* some portability fixes to the build scripts
* a fix for multi-\span in alignments causing unbreakable
   loops
* manual improvements from Jonathan Sauer
* fix for undefined csnames in \directlua if
   web2c's hash_extra is nonzero
* fix for LR text inside of a RL document
* fix for open_read_file callback not being called
   unless find_read_file was also registered
* removed the ocp status message when \ocps are not
   actually used
* unicodeenc in the fontforge to_table renamed to
   unicode for improved consistency

I have uploaded source and linux/win32 binaries to

   http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/luatex/

Have fun,

There definately be a luatex executable included as well, but it will

 for proper typesetting.

Why? Because TeXLive is setup such that ConTeXt still uses pdfetex and
because luatex is beta -- or because some files are missing?

good question .. at some point we will change from pdftex to luatex as

there is a new luatex binary; you really need the latest mkiv (i just

lowered again, but don't expect more savings there (at least not on the

sounds like good new to me but I was also impresses by the last betas

Hi everybody,

Right now I'm writing an article and in the title's block I wanna thank
somebody and in the authors' block I wanna display the email addresses. And
I want them done with footnotes with set 2 conversion. When I use
===
\definenote[thanks][conversion=set 2]
\definenote[email]
  [conversion=set 2,
   textstyle=type]
===
The footnotes are shown with two areas, one for the \thanks and another for
the \email, and they all started with * symbol, I mean there're two
footnotes noted by star-symbol. I know I can just use
\setupfootnotes[conversion=set 2] and do all my job by only using \footnote
macro, but it's just of curiosity, can I use those meaningful macros to do
continuously numbered footnotes and displayed only one area at the bottom of
the page.

luatools only scans trees with a ls-R database. For some reason mktexlsr
only generates ls-R in /usr/local/share/texmf and /var/lib/texmf/

I was running mktexlsr without root permissions (thinking that ls-R will
be only regenerated in TEXMFHOME. I was wrong).

 Since the new

 format generation does not work.

I changed {texilve, tetex} to just texlive in texmf.cnf, but even now the

This is not surprising since it is using
/usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex and not
/home/adityam/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex

luatools cont-en.tex gives /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex
so something went wrong with luatools --generate.

Since kpsewhich cont-en.tex gives the correct file while
luatools cont-en.tex gives the incorrect file, is this a bug with the
inbuild search engine in luatools, or is there something wrong in my
configuration?

luatools only scans trees with a ls-R database. For some reason mktexlsr
 only generates ls-R in /usr/local/share/texmf and /var/lib/texmf/

hm, this should not be so, i need to check it

[NTG-context] no ctx file found

2007-12-17 Thread Hans van der Meer
After starting afresh after an os update and much trouble in getting
all those texmf.cnf parameters in order followed by context
specialities, I finally managed to get the cont-en.fmt in /usr/local/
texlive/2007/texmf-config/web2c/pdftex/cont-en.fmt.

But now (running in TeXShop) typesetting will not occur:

TeXExec | processing document 'test.tex'
TeXExec | no ctx file found
TeXExec | tex processing method: context
TeXExec | TeX run 1
TeXExec | writing option file test.top
TeXExec | using randomseed 1100
TeXExec | tex engine: pdftex
TeXExec | tex format: cont-en
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.5 (Web2C 7.5.6)
  \write18 enabled.
  %-line parsing enabled.
  (/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf/web2c/natural.tcx)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)
TeXExec | runtime: 0.601367

In texmf.cnf I have TEXFORMATS = .;$TEXMF/web2c/{$engine,}// (worked

What's wrong here?

remove *all* cont-en.fmt files on your system, maybe there is a lookup
match lower in the tree; keep in mind that when generating formats, the
generator has to move the file someplace, while when using the format
the variable kicks in, so there can be a mismatch

Last luatex compile well, and I have made my first big pdf with it:

(757 pages) .

Also I have compiled a normal document from zs,

Re: [NTG-context] no ctx file found

2007-12-17 Thread Hans van der Meer
Thanks, Hans.
Apparently that is the trick. After using find to locate all
cont*.fmt's and removing them, luatools generated one in its cache
directory that proved to be sufficient. Must indeed be a path variable
problem (TeX now has so many of them, I never seem to get them sorted
out; not to mention the interplay between those in .cnf files and
those in my .bashrc that drives me mad).

 maybe --verbose helps

with luatools --generate, --verbose does not give any additional
 information.

Ok. Finally had to read luatools.lua.

MTX_INPUT_TRACE=10 luatools --generate gives a bit more info.

This is what I think is happening. I do sudo mktexlsr and get
mktexlsr: Updating /usr/local/share/texmf/ls-R...
mktexlsr: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN...
mktexlsr: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXLIVE...
mktexlsr: Updating /var/lib/texmf/ls-R...
mktexlsr: Done.

ls-R-TEXMFMAIN and ls-R-TEXLIVE and symlinked in other directories. But no ls-R
was created for TEXMFHOME. Luatools looks in directors in TEXMF containing ls-R
files. It does not find any in $HOME/texmf, so it does not include it in the
hash for where to look for files. When it searches for cont-en.tex it finds one
in /usr/share/texmf/ (the distribution directory).

kpsewhich on the other hand (it appears) also searches files in the TEXMF
tree. This is what kpsewhich tells me

kdebug:Search path for ls-R files (from texmf.cnf)
kdebug: =
/var/lib/texmf:/usr/local/share/texmf:/usr/share/texmf:/usr/share/texmf-texlive

kdebug:Search path for tex files (from texmf.cnf)
kdebug: =
.:/home/adityam/.texmf-config/tex/kpsewhich//:/home/adityam/.texmf-var/tex/kpsewhich//:/home/adityam/texmf/tex/kpsewhich//:/etc/texmf/tex/kpsewhich//:!!/var/lib/texmf/tex/kpsewhich//:!!/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/kpsewhich//:!!/usr/share/texmf/tex/kpsewhic
h//:!!/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/kpsewhich//:/home/adityam/.texmf-config/tex/generic//:/home/adityam/.texmf-var/tex/generic//:/home/adityam/texmf/tex/generic//:/etc/texmf/tex/generic//:!!/var/lib/texmf/tex/generic//:!!/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/generic/

/:!!/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic//:!!/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/generic//:/home/adityam/.texmf-config/tex///:/home/adityam/.texmf-var/tex///:/home/adityam/texmf/tex///:/etc/texmf/tex///:!!/var/lib/texmf/tex///:!!/usr/local/share/texmf/tex///:!!/usr/shar

e/texmf/tex///:!!/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex///

So /home/adityam/texmf/tex/// tree is there, and it seems that kpsewhich finds
the file by brute-force search of that tree (there is no ls-R file in
TEXMFHOME).

So, I read the man page of mktexlsr and try
mktexlsr $HOME/texmf

which creates a ls-R in $HOME/texmf

Now, I recreate the formats, and finally things are working. That is, I am back
to where I was before I reinstalled the OS. Mkiv is working, mtxrun --script
font still does not work. I will look into that tomorrow.

Bottom line, if you try to install mkiv on a non-distribution tree, run mktexlsr
tree before generating formats.
