we should have a mingw version and not a cygwin one playing unix

(btw, i do not install in top folders -)

[NTG-context] why minimals fail on windows

2008-03-10 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Hello,

I think that I have found the culprit why the installer for minimals
fails on windows. If one tries to install minimals to some location
with uppercase letters in folder names, rsync fails to create new
folders at that location.

So if Hans installs them to top folder, it works fine for him, but
when I have tested them in "Temp" or "Documents and Settings, it
faild". I will try to "CD" to the desired location and then use
relative paths instead of absolute ones.

rsync on windows is a complete mess ...

I've just updated the svn repository for linux-64:

it would explain why I had no problems before: my normal setup is
usually a bit ahead of the beta's, even. It was just today that I
needed a new install to hunt down a strange luatex compilation bug.

ah, no idea ... extend normally scales the font horizontally (and
therefore needs to widen the metrics); using outline trickery for faking
bold sounds like a bad idea to me; anyhow, in mkiv that's not a font
feature but a rendering option

There is a little problem that will probably have to be solved by
installation script.

bin/context has stubs & luatools from current version of ConTeXt, and
I suspect tha the "current" version is too old to handle the latest
luaTeX binary (am I wrong)?

I now changed the scripts to take luatools from context beta, but I
suspect that this will cause problems with the current ConTeXt then
(does current work with the latest beta?). Or ... maybe a "luatools
--selfupdate" at the end.

Concerning the luatex on linux-64: Peter Münster has sent me a version
of LuaTeX that might be too recent (he has compiled it from trunk). If
needed, you or him need(s) to send me the latest beta.

I also get this (for some reason?):

LuaTools | running command: luatex --ini --lua="cont-en.luc"
"/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex" \\dump
(/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex
! I can't find file `context.tex'.
l.16 \input context.tex

I remeber seing the same problem on windows some time ago.

Hello,

\input context.tex : cannot find input file context.tex

What could be the reason for this problem?

Details:

* no such problem with context-current
* no such problem with MKII
* luatex version: This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.23.0-2008031013
* environment:

  - TEXMFCACHE=/opt/TeX-live/texmf-var
  - TEXMFCNF=/opt/TeX-live/texmf/web2c
* regeneration of luatex-cache does not help (luatools --generate)
* "luatools --find-file context.tex" finds the right file:

TIA for any hints!

If you want to loosen the letter spacing slightly, just use something
like

   \font\a="Gentium:embolden=2;letterspace=2"

Right, which is why it's not automatically applied.

The problem is with URLs in general: there are not that many safe
places in an URL for inserting hyphenation points.

I have found that often if you need many long urls the best approach
is to add explicit linebreaks around it, so they become 'displayed',
or to switch to raggedright typesetting.

In this particular case,

   \sethyphenatedurlbefore v

in your preamble will help (you can add a few more if you like).
The downside is that it can become unclear where the URL ends.

Best wishes,
Taco

If I understand your question, extending the kerning for line
thickness is missing, yes (but maybe not desired in monospace fonts or
in Chinese, which is where the feature request came from, but in most
cases extended should be applied indeed). I wanted to ask that, but
I'm not sure about what is the most right thing to do.

I'm only guessing, but I also have a feeling that ConTeXt could
already support that feature per-se (with minor modifications).
Doesn't "outline fonts" in ConTeXt use exactly the same kind of
trickery as this "embolden" in XeTeX? (Only that outline only draws
outlines, while embolden draws the inner part (normal glyphs) +
outline.)

I'm not 100% sure if that's the problem, but often
   luatools --selfupdate
(in other words: a new version of luatools in BIN) helps.

this looks like the beta from 04.03.2008. you need the latest luatex
binaries (0.22.1) for it to run.

look at

http://minimals.contextgarden.net/pragma

for the latest binaries

...i can only tell about my own experience with it.

i often forget to update the copies of mtxrun.lua and luatools.lua in
the bin directory (win). donno how this is on other os.

also sometimes (happend two times) the only solution was to delete the
luatex cache and rebuild it from scratch.

hope that helps,

peter

[NTG-context] URL wrapping

2008-03-10 Thread Adam Duck
Hello list,

I'm writing my diploma thesis and have gotten into a problem with URLs
in my references. As you can see in my example, \useURL and \biburl
don't wrap... also, using \hyphenatedurl doesn't help much. I've read
through the archives, but all postings there don't help. Alan Bowen
has/had the same problem described in
http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20070125.173931.a70b45d3.en.html

The problem is getting worse by the fact that I'm using BibTeX to
produce the references. So, I don't have that many tweaking
possibilities.

Help...

cu, Adam.

The URL in the publications doesn't warp: \cite[BMPINTERBC]. And this one, too, doesn't
wrap: \useURL{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thisisaveryveryveryverylongurlthatisnotwrapped.png}.
And this one, isn't better: \hyphenatedurl{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thisisaveryveryveryverylongurlthatisnotwrapped.png}

[NTG-context] unable to make format after upgrade

2008-03-10 Thread zs
Hi all,

I tried to update my installation using svn version of luatex and context from:
http://mirror.contextgarden.net/context/beta/cont-tmf.zip

Running "texexec --make --all --luatex" gives me this error message:

LuaTools | running command: luatex --ini --lua="cont-en.luc"
"/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex" \\dump
(/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/cont-en.tex
(/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/context.tex
(/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/syst-pln.tex)
(/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/syst-prm.tex)
(/opt/context/tex/texmf-local/tex/context/base/luat-env.tex
! LuaTeX error [string "luas[0]"]:1: attempt to call field 'luafilechunk' (a
nil value).
\ctxluabyteload ...nvironment.luafilechunk("#1") }

\ ...fproductionrun \else \ctxluabyteload {#1}{#2}
  \fi \global \everyloadluac...
l.167 \registerctxluafile{luat-env}{1.001}

Pdftex and xetex formats are generated without any trouble.

Could you give me a hint?

Thanks

hm, so it's embolden? in that case we need a remap to extend

i remember that taco and i discussed it with regards to luatex (i think
that we even had a key in the tfm table at some point); i need to look
into it
