 \dimexpr and \numexpr are explaines in the e-tex manual.

 The only important thing for \dimexpr is to write the dimen value
 as first value after the \dimexpr command and then the numeric values.

 examples, set off from the main text.
 I first used
 \defineframedtext [example]

 \stopexample

 However, a long example (many paragraphs) that spans more than one

 Textbackground seems more appropriate, so I tried
 \definetextbackground [example]

 \definestartstop [example]
 [before={\starttextbackground[example]},after=\stoptextbackground]
 but this does not work. I tried other variants (such as adding

[NTG-context] Background on paragraphs

2009-01-27 Thread Antoine Cailliau
Hi all,

I'm new to ConTeXt but not new to LaTeX and I really
enjoy to learn again something new and that seems
to be cleaner in syntax at least.

By reading the excursion, I typed something that did
not work on my computer. It is about the background

cannot see the text. I attached the PDF file produced.

I used texexec :

and the following code :
\setupbackground[background=screen,corner=round]
\starttext

Nam semper mi pellentesque diam. Vestibulum tellus erat,
vestibulum vel, blandit ac, placerat at, metus. Integer

I hope to have some help and feedback about,

you can see, I have substituted it for the full name everywhere in the
cole.bib file

As a matter of fact, and just in case of,

and

grep 'apj' cole.bib

yield nothing

A bit more of information: This is

OpenBSD spree 4.4 GENERIC#1638 i386

and

spree(p3)| texexec -v
TeXExec | version 6.2.0 - 1997-2006 - PRAGMA ADE/POD

The full output of texexec follows below. As you can see, there are a
lot of warnings, but they look as they look when in LaTeX I compile
for the first time the document. The warnings disappear when I
recompile it, because it needs a second time. I'm not sure of the
meaning in ConTeXt.

Any hint?

Help will be appreciated

Re: [NTG-context] installing fonts pdftex

On Jan 27, 2009, at 12:28 AM, Mohamed Bana wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Hi,

please address questions to the mailing-list, not to me personally.

1. when is the last time you tried to install a font manually using
texfont? i've been trying to get install warnockpro and cronospro -
both of which are .otf - but i've had no lack.

texfont --makepath --install --fontroot=`pwd` --vendor=adobe --
co=warnockpro --en=texnansi --lcdf --preproc --
variant=liga,kern,smcp,onum

the last time i checked texfont was generating an empty map file.

texfont is really old, it predates opentype fonts, so you can't expect
it to handle such fonts. It was a brave and wonderful effort to
automate installation of fonts, but I gave up using it - not because
texfont itself is bad, but because so many fonts are just faulty and/
or idiosyncratic, and automatization just can't handle all these
eceptions. I always had to double-check and edit files by hand, so I
decided to go for a manual process. The --lcdf switch was added by
Adam Lindsay, who also wrote a short article about otf and ConTeXt: http://www.tug.org/pracjourn/2005-2/lindsay/lindsay.pdf
 Too bad Adam isn't active anymore, he was a great help in ConTeXt
development. If you search the mailing list archive for texfont
lcdf, you will see that the problem with the empty map file is common
and was never really solved, AFAIK.

So you have several options:

1. install the fonts manually

2. use texfont and write the map file manually

3. try Patrick's otfinst http://wiki.contextgarden.net/otfinst

4. I have a set of support files for using Cronos and Warnock with
pdftex; if you want, I can make a zip and send them to you (not before
Thursday, however).

the free version of lucida (.ttf) that ship with Java files worked
fine

2. is there someone i must do to get to dashes working properly? as
in, --- doesn't generate the right dash nor does --.

These are defined as ligatures in the tfm/vf files. Doesn't texfont
produce vpl-files as an intermediate format? You could open those and
check whether the ligature is defined. It probably isn't, and then you
have to hunt down the reason or add it manually...

Good luck

[NTG-context] BibTeX in ConTeXt natbib style

2009-01-27 Thread J.A.J. Pater

In LaTeX when using the natbib package I can use:

\citet[p. 113]{Bell1992} to get: Bell (1992, p. 112)
\cite[p. 113]{Bell1992} to get: (Bell, 1992, p. 112)

Trying to do this in ConTeXt I came up with this:

\setupcite [author][left=,right=]
\setupcite [year][left=,right=]

\def\CiteP#1#2%
   {(\cite[author][{#2}]%
   ,\ \cite[year][{#2}]%
   ,\ {#1}
)}

\CiteP{p. 13}{article-full}

And:

\def\CiteA#1#2%
   {\cite[author][{#2}]%
   \ (\cite[year][{#2}]%
   ,\ {#1}
)}

\CiteA{p. 13}{article-full}

It works alright, but it seems rather crude to me.
Is there a more elegant way?
Or maybe more to the point: a way in which I do not have to use \setupcite?

Thanks in advance,

Adriaan.

P.S. I made my first contribution to the wiki:

[NTG-context] unwanted rgb--gray conversion (mkiv)

2009-01-27 Thread Peter Rolf

Hi Hans,

The attached example works fine with mkii (text and gfx both use RGB
colors). Using mkiv reduces the colorspace of the graphic to GRAY.
Sadly PDFX/-4 doesn't allow to mix color profiles of colorspace RGB with
GRAY ones. So I'm forced to always use the RGB colorspace...

Best wishes, Peter

Although I think that all packages mentioned below are installed I get
some error messages in the log. The dvi output is generated, but the
errors are strange. Is this a kind of incompatibility described in a FAQ?

As an example:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\usepackage{m-pictex,m-ch-en}

\begin{document}
\setupchemical[size=small,scale=200,width=fit,frame=off]
\startchemical
\chemical[SIX,B,C,R,RZ][R,R,R,R,R,R]
\stopchemical
\end{document}

On my Debian system, I had to install the context package (of course)
as well as the texlive-pictures package (for pictex) for this to work.

This problem was mentioned once 2007 and Hans fixed it
and I don't get it with TeXLive 2008.

Can you send use the file ppchtex.noc from your system,
it's possible MikTeX includes a old version of the file
without the patch.

Hi,

 context --make xp

will generate the experimental format (you really need a luatools --generate

With

 context --interface=xp yourfile

will use that format. Eventually the xp format will go away but this is a
nice intermediate step for those who are willing to help debugging the code.

How do I use the new separator code? Using the hint in strc-sec I tried

\let\spr\separatorlist % this will enable this feature

\setuphead[section]   [separator={?,!,*}]
\setuphead[subsection][separator={??,!!,**}]

\starttext

\chapter{test}
\section{test} \subsection{test} \subsection{test}
\section{test} \subsection{test} \subsection{test}

\stoptext

I get the default separators. I do not see where
\separatorlist is defined.

Also, it is possible to use different separators in heads and when they
are referenced. Specifically, I am trying to achieve IEEE formatting
guidelines which state

In the head only show the current number

Section I.
Subsection B.
Subsubsection 3)
paragraph a)

While refereing to a section, use

Section I
Subsection I-A
subsubsection I-A.1
paragraph I-A.1.a

Can the current implementation of separator sets achieve this?

Thanks for your answer.

I installed the 2009-01-18 yesterday at home on my mac. Everything works
fine!

Now I re-reinstalled the 2009-01-18 on the windows machine at work, and I
get the same result as before: no gray background.
I even did the texexec --make metafun --standalone from Wolfgang, but
still no background.

I noticed that on the win system the filename-mpgraph.4000 etc. and
-mpgraph.keep files don't appear at all; they do appear of course with
2008-10-31. Appearently these are holding the code for the background.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Thomas
