[NTG-context] how to get minimals working?

2009-08-04 Thread Hans van der Meer
I downloaded and installed the minimals. Running LuaTeX MKIV then
hangs in TeXShop and must be aborted. Does someone knows what is amiss
here?

I use the following runscript in TeXShop:

Re: [NTG-context] [PATCH] Add begin_of_buffer and end_of_buffer hooks for lua pretty printers

2009-08-04 Thread Matthijs Kooijman
Hi Hans,

i uploaded a beta zip with two extra hooks
I see the hooks, but I can't find the spot where they are called? It seems you
missed this part of my patch?

Also, I think you didn't update the definition of \type to use the typesingle
lua function I proposed, which means that \type{} commands won't get
begin_of_buffer and end_of_buffer called at all.

Am I missing something, or did you? Will you fix this, or should I prepare a
new patch?

i also moved the pretty printers to another namespace so you need to use
the buffers.newvisualizer function so that we don't get clashes with
 future features
This change looks good indeed, those long function names weren't all that
pretty.

you need to adapt the wiki accordingly
I will, as soon as I get things working again :-)

Gr.

[NTG-context] framed box in between

2009-08-04 Thread Ciro Soto
I am resending this note in case it got lost when the server was down.

ciro

Hi all,

I would like to have a quote inserted in a framed box that is part
in the margin and part in the text,
and surrounded by the text.
I found the command to have it in the margin or in the text area, but
couldn't figure out how to
locate the frame partially in the text area, and partially in the margin.

How could I do that?

thank you,

Ciro

I think thats the way Mk IV is supposed to be, you could type the “double
quotes” in from your keyboard. Using texexec(Mk II) you should get the old
behavior, i.e. `` = “

[NTG-context] Layers don't repeat in Mk IV

2009-08-04 Thread Derek CORDEIRO
I've been trying to use layers for a simple logo that repeats on all pages.
Something along the lines of the code below:

\definelayer[mybg][x=0mm, y=0mm,width=\paperwidth,
height=\paperheight,repeat=yes]
\setlayer [mybg]
[hoffset=1cm, voffset=1cm]
{\framed[frame=on, width=3cm,
height=2cm]{\externalfigure[cow][width=1cm]
}}
\setupbackgrounds[page][background=mybg]

\starttext
\dorecurse{6}{\input tufte\par}
\stoptext

It works as expected using Mk II but does not work under Mk IV: The layer
appears only on the first page.

Please Help,

Aditya has answered you, but just as explanation:

1.) Authors should update modules.contextgarden.net - this is the
primary and definite source (however, I dislike the current interface;
we'll force Patrick to change at least something here, preferrably use
some version control)

2.a) There's a (non-public) mirror of dl.contextgarden.net/modules
that syncs all the modules that should go to CTAN (and renames them at
the same time); CTAN team then syncs automatically once per day. (Read
as: if author updates modules.contextgarden.net, this should
proliferate to CTAN in 26 hours + one extra day for secondary
mirrors)

2.b) Minimals sync from the same source
(http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/modules/) at random
times.

3.a) TeX Live and MikTeX sync from CTAN automatically (once per day?).

3.b) Users of minimals can use the normal rsync route. Once you use
--extras=t-modulename it should be updating on regular bases from
that moment on (I just figured out that we currently have no interface
to remove module, but interface needs revision anyway.)

If someone writes a new module someone (me) needs to set up 2.a) and
2.b) to take the new module into account. But of course you may use
whatever way you prefer to fetch your favourite module. You can put it
to texmf-local or texmf-whatever (whatever should not be context or
os-name) or to TEXFHOME (I have a feeling that we have set up that
once, but I'm not 100% sure).

I think thats the way Mk IV is supposed to be, you could type the “double

Using texexec(Mk II) you should get the old

True, but one should nevertheless better use \quotation{...} or
“double quotes” both in MKII and MKIV. The MKII behaviour is a hack
that works with Latin Modern (as it did in Computer Modern). The
reason why it works is that there are hacky ligatures in that font. If
you were using any other font, you would not get the curly quotes
(but you probably wouldn't dare generating tfm files yourself, so you
would never notice that). People that do generate tfm files make sure
to artificially add those ligatures.

MKIV has deliberately chosen no to support that hackery ***. There are
three exceptions though:
- endash (--) and emdash (---)
- apostrophe (')
since we all agreed that those are still hard enough to type or at
least hard enough to distinguish (esp. the dashes in monospace font)
even if they do have their own Unicode codepoint.

*** partially also because of another ugly overlap or coincidence;
namely -- grave accent and ` share the same codepoint in Unicode, so
it would be impossible to support both placing grave accent and
automatic conversion of ` into curly quotes at the same time; TeX
fonts use two different characters for that)

Yes, it's quite possible. I don't have the fonts to test, but a few
possible relevant remarks:

1.) Try not to use that typescript and check if it still breaks

2.) Even if your typescripts are broken, there must be a bug
somewhere: luatex should not hang even if you feed it with junk; even
if you fix the typescripts, try to find the reason for that behaviour

3.) You use Lucida math; I would be surprised if it still works (I
would bet it doesn't, but I might be wrong.)

4.) It seems that the run breaks in type-psc (not 100% sure)

5.) [encoding=8r] ??? That's not even supposed to work in MKIV (unless
I'm wrong). Usually it gets ignored (and luatex just reads afm and pfb
files), but I'm not sure how exactly tfm reading works (if it works at
all inside typescripts).

6.) If you don't like TeX Gyre and think that using the old PostScript
fonts are still needed, it might make sense to revise your typescript
and make an optional officially unsupported (but public) typescript
that others could use as well (not sure if that would mean including
it in core or not).

Thanks Mojca for your answer and suggestion. There surely is something with

MKIV has undergone *heavy* changes recently, and fonts were one of the
area that has been influenced a lot. You should not expect your old
typescripts to work with MKIV without modifications.

Switching them out of the way at least brings typesetting in LM back.
However, I am attached to my use of Lucida and Mathtimes (both from YY) and
I would very much like to continue using them. Do you have a pointer with
 what to start?

Math definitions are a bit non-trivial and might be a subject to
change. I thought Hans was using Lucida extensively, at least all of
his manuals are typeset in lucida, so you have a slightly better
chance to get it done.

I'll stop responding about math at this point since I don't know
enough and I should not invest time into it right now.

Would you give changing texnansi for 8r a good chance, for a
first try? Or is more heavy surgery on my typefiles needed?

It's best if Hans answers about the preferred way to use the old tfm
fonts with ConTeXt. But for math it definitely means heavy surgery.
Not even times and palatino are working properly as far as I know. You
may take a look at type-otf.mkiv and type-vfu. One needs to create a
table of glyphs. I fear that Lucida has them at non-standard slots.

I would gladly help with lucida, but I may not right now.

 I was never very
good with typefiles and I fear very much I can start over all again for
 mkiv.

:)

... and I fear you are right.

Well, you might need some help to get Lucida done. Since you are happy
with TeX Gyre, most fonts that kept causing you problem are already
covered, right?

For the regular postscript fonts like NewCenturySchoolbook etc.

\usetypescript[schola]
\setupbodyfont[schola]

or

\usetypescript[schoolbook]
\setupbodyfont[schoolbook]

But ... what matching math font were you usually using?

 I will we be
happy to use the TeX Gyre files for these. I guess they are already
 somewhere in my system.

You probably have texgyreschola-regular.otf etc. if you either have TL
2008/09 or ConTeXt minimals.

Would you please point me to a relevant starting
 point for the necessary incantations?

H http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeX_Gyre, but the best
reference is usually type-xxx.mkiv/tex.

For some dark reason I always seem to
get lost when searching the ContextWiki for a specific topic.

That might not necessary be your problem :) Wiki is not in the best

As I said:

There's a lng script tha synchronizes everything and
it actually only gets executed when something changes (that is:
ConTeXt or binaries, I'm not even sure if the second is still true).
It doesn't watch for changes in modules or CTAN.

I have added a cron job to update everything once per day now (scripts
need to be rewritten anyway).

If you need something to be updated, you can always drop me a private
mail and hope that I will read it before the script does :) After all
... if enough people annoy me :) I'll figure out that I need to set
the cronjobs more often.

Hans (or someone else) added abbreviation as a standard synonym in the file
strc-syn.mkivhttp://source.contextgarden.net/tex/context/base/strc-syn.mkiv?search=abbreviations.
You no longer need to separately define abbreviation with \definesynonym in
