Re: [NTG-context] texshow-web

2010-02-06 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi Mikael,

Do they appear automatically in texshow or does someone have to update
by hand? How long does it typically take? Is there something one can
 do?

I will transfer the old texshow-web into the wiki, so the new commands
can be added there easily. Jelle Huisman has suggested this and I think
it is the best way for all of us to keep the commands up to date.

[NTG-context] texshow-web (was: colors without \definecolor)

2010-02-05 Thread Mikael Persson
Dear list and Patrick,

from texshow-web page ( http://texshow.contextgarden.net/ ) I read

texshow-web is a web application for all user-commands that can be
used in ConTeXt.

However, I see that \colored is not inthere. This is also true for
some other commands appearing at this list occasionally (usually dug
from source by Wolfgang). Is this because

1) the texshow is not updated?
2) these commands are not meant for users?
3) any other reason?

I think the texshow-web is a very useful source of information. An
updated version would be really wonderful!

/Mikael

I'd like to make up rgb vectors on the spot without having to
 \definecolor them first, e.g. something like \color[r=.4,g=0,b=1]
{colored text}.  Is there a way to achieve this in mkiv?  (Right now I'm
assigning new rgb values to the same color name whenever the function
is called that concatenates the next \color[]{} statement.  This seems a
bit verbose and hacky to me.)

\colored[r=...,g=...,b=...]{...}

if something is missing one can create the xml blob that has to go into
the cont-en.xml file and send it to the list (for verification) and when
ok it will be added to the main cont-en.xml

Is it possible to include a second XML-File (for the missing

With texshow there was an option to include an other second XML-File

[NTG-context] texshow-web questions

2008-06-27 Thread richard . stephens
As an eternal optimist, I often refer to texshow-web in the hope that I
will find a function to help me, or a quick description of one that I
already know. In most cases I end up reverting to searching the manuals
and source code. I like the idea of texshow-web and I sometimes add notes
to entries if I find our something interesting. I would be quite happy to
add lots more, but I have some questions and suggestions for improvements
which I think would help.

1) Is there a way of adding a function to the list? or can it be updated
to include all the functions from the many macro packages included with
the context distribution. For example, in recent discussion group threads
I have found out about the \digits command and the \filename and
\hyphenatedfilename commands, none of which is in texshow-web. I would
have been happy to add notes on them if I could.

2) If I'm adding notes to a command, is it possible to add a URL link to a
particular page in one of the manuals? This would great for looking up a
command and going straight to the relevant entry in the relevant manual.

Regards,

Richard Stephens

[NTG-context] texshow out of sync?

Hello,

What about merging the 2 texshow databases (web and perl), and then
maintaining only one unique database?

I've just seen, that for example the command \setupdescriptions has more
options in the perl-database and more descriptions in the web-database...

Cheers, Peter

texshow.pl can't always go to the web to fetch (or even check the

would mean pre-packaging the database in the distribution, and
that in turn means it will need a maintainer ...

 Hello Taco,

Do the 2 databases have the same format?

Probably not, texshow-web is a Rails application so it will probably
use an actual SQL database for the additional information. Patrick will
know for sure.

texshow.pl is uses the cont-XX.xml files from the core distribution,
and, optionally, a second XML file per interface for the explanations
and examples etc. The format for that second file is:

cd:explanations
cd:explanation name=cmdname [type=environment]
 cd:description.../cd:description
 cd:comment.../cd:comment
 cd:example.../cd:example !-- can be repeated --
   /cd:explanation
   ... !-- more explanations --
/cd:explanations

If yes, I could be the maintainer, and copy in a regular time interval the
web-database to some svn repository or elsewhere for the distribution.
Then texshow.pl would see the same database, just not the latest version.
And whenever you or other people add new commands and descriptions, they do
 it on the web only.

If no, then we could discuss other options...

 Best wishes, Peter

What about merging the 2 texshow databases (web and perl), and then

texshow.pl can't always go to the web to fetch (or even check the
filestamp) of its database, that would be dead-slow. So that
would mean pre-packaging the database in the distribution, and
that in turn means it will need a maintainer ...

Hello Taco,

Do the 2 databases have the same format?

If yes, I could be the maintainer, and copy in a regular time interval the
web-database to some svn repository or elsewhere for the distribution.
Then texshow.pl would see the same database, just not the latest version.
And whenever you or other people add new commands and descriptions, they do
it on the web only.

If no, then we could discuss other options...

Best wishes, Peter

Yes, that is normal. Did you notice how the version number for texshow
is way below one? This is one of the reasons why that is so. At first,
I had no time to implement all features. Then, I was no longer happy
with perl. Then, the XML format was not complete enough to cover all
of the nice extensions in texshow-web. Even later, we wanted to create
a local http server using ruby (and reuse the texshow-web code), but we
could not figure out how to make that work reliably. And right now, we
have all these problems, combined.

I didn't think of _that_ question. I guess Taco and I have to figure
that out, but I suppose the answer is currently no, but will be yes in
the near future.

Hallo Patrick,
I added one third (only one third but most important one since
analogy;-) of \setuplayout command to tewshow-web. To be more
descriptive I snaffled table of page areas from wiki. Unfortunately
comment field seems not to be html sensitive (see

Is there some chance to display the table here or it is better to refer

Thanks. I'm using the newest teTeX. Here the output of kpsewhich:
kpsewhich --format=other text files --progname=context cont-en.xml
- no output
kpsewhich --progname=context cont-en.xml
- /opt/teTeX/texmf-dist/tex/context/interface/cont-en.xml

Then, I loaded the texmf.cnf into my editor and found the following text:

% Some additional input variables for several programs. If you add
% a program that uses the 'other text files' or 'other binary files'
% search formats, you'll want to add their variables here as well.

So I added this line:
CONTEXTINPUTS = .;$TEXMF/tex/context//
And now, it seems all ok!

Thanks!
Peter

P.S.: In the manual of kpsewhich, the options begin with only one hyphen.

[NTG-context] texshow-web

2004-08-04 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hello Taco,

This also raises another problem: what to do if the syntax
definition is wrong?

The very first definition is wrong: \about's syntax is
   \about [ref]
 not
   \about {text} [ref]

I fixed that in the garden, but will that new definition be destroyed at the
 next automatic update?

No, it won't. If it does, it it clearly an error. (I was a bit lying,
the update is semi automatic, my script gives me the choice of using
the changed entry on the webserver or the new one in cont-en.xml).

(my change also didn't update the display, btw.)

This is clearly an error that should not happen. I'll look into it
this week.

Thanks for the report.

Do you have developer tools installed? You need make, gcc etc. for
compiling the module(s).

perl -MCPAN -eshell

((
Enters Perl CPAN shell mode.
I think you must answer some installation questions of Perl Module CPAN.
And probably you must install LWP (LibWWWPerl) before Tk...
If it doesn't work try force install instead of install
))
install Bundle::LWP
install Tk

Tk.pm is a perl module. It was missing on SGI Irix too. Perl has a
tools to automate the installation of modules, but you may need some
libraries as well (Tk/Tcl, compression, etc.) which can either be
installed under Perl or for use with other applications. You will
need the developer tools if you build the module from sources.
