If you don't mind a question from a lapsed user: what is the reason for
this restriction? It seems arbitrary but I have a feeling it's some
vanilla-TeX thing which I have forgotten.

Yes, you could also abuse \sc for another style.

Small caps are a bit special though, nowadays they’re often contained in fonts
and you address them via OpenType features.

Hi
In my current project I need to use different variants if the Noto
Serif font (Regular, Medium, Semi Condensed Bold, Regular ExtraBold.) Is

my understanding of typescripts correct that I cannot have bold and extrabold
in the same typescript? And that I need a typescript for regular and one for the
semicondensed variants?

You can combine whatever you like in one typescript, but you’re restricted to

six styles (regular, italic, slanted, bold, bold italic, bold slanted). You can
just
“abuse” the italic or slanted styles for your other weights.

... or use roman styles, if you don’t need roman.

Thanks for your help.
After playing a bit more with the different variants for loading fonts it looks
like I don't even need to use typescripts. \definefontfamily works just as good:

\definefontfamily[mainface][rm][Noto Serif]
\definefontfamily[mainface-semicond][rm][Noto Serif]
   [tf=file:NotoSerif-SemiCondensed.ttf,
   it=file:NotoSerif-SemiCondensedItalic.ttf,
   bf=file:NotoSerif-SemiCondensedBold.ttf,
   bi=file:NotoSerif-SemiCondensedBoldItalic.ttf]

But, do typescripts have any advantages over that approach?

Even when you use \definefontfamily the internal font handling relies on
the typescripts.

The advantage of hand written (or generated) typescripts is better
reliability, most of the time you pass just a name to \definefontfamily
and some font is chosen for each style but this can fail because all
depends on the information in the font files. When you use a typescript
each alternative is associated with a certain font file and almost no
guess work is required.

Then, for fonts used only in specific contexts, you can also do something like

\definefont [TitleFont] [notoserifsemicondensedextrabold]

and use that with \TitleFont
But you will then also need \TitleMonoFont etc, whereas it seems easier to keep
things consistent with \definefontfamily...

One thing I'm wondering about: Would it be possible to add a easy mechanism to
switch to different variants of a font, say, to use the SemiCondensed variant
or the ExtraCondensed or so? (Or does that already exist?)
And, what about adding more styles so that you could have Light, Medium,
SemiBold, Bold, ExtraBold, Black etc. all defined in a single fontfamily? If
that was available each font family would then define all the styles for one
variant (SemiCondensed, ExtraCondensed, Condensed, each with 18 styles!)

You can add more alternatives (\it, \bf ...) to the font mechanism but
this requires additional settings (\definebodyfont ...) to get it
working. A limiting factor is that you have to stick to two-letter names
for each alternative and the easier solution is to create additional
typefaces.

 I am trying to write some typescripts for the Venturis ADF and Beneris ADF
 families (and a few others) using Wolfgang's typescripts for Fontin et. al.
 as a guide. I can't seem to figure out what, \s! or \typescripttwo of
 \typescriptthree do and the examples I have looked at on the wiki either
 don't contain them or don't explain them .

The \s!… string are a method to save memory in TeX but you don’t have to use
it, just use “serif” instead of “\s!serif”.

With \typescriptone etc. you can access the value in the arguments for
\starttypescripts, e.g. in the following example

  \starttypescript [serif] [venturis]

\typescriptone expands to “serif” and \typescripttwo expands to “venturis”.

 I also don't seem to be able to find a command reference for \starttypescript
 which explains what the various option fields mean or what predefined
 values exist for each.

The first argument of \starttypescript can be

  - serif
  - sans
  - mono
  - handwriting
  - calligraphy

and the first argument of \definefontsynonym can be

  – Serif
  - SerifItalic
  - SerifBold
  - SerifSlanted
  - SerifBoldItalic
  - SerifBoldSlanted
  - SerifCaps
  - Sans
  - SansItalic

You have to find both afm and pfb with the same name. So maybe it does
make sense to also allow pfb. (pfb might be the more intuitive of the
two.)

 I can use the beramono font in this way:

 \definefont [Bera] [fvmr8a at 9.5pt]

 \starttext
 \Bera
 \input knuth
 \stoptext

 but how would I insert it into a typescript of libertine,
 where the mono font should used from bera?

You need something like this:

\starttypescript [mono] [bera] [name]
\definefontsynonym [Mono] [file:fvmr8a.pfb]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript[libertine]
   \definetypeface[libertine][rm][serif][libertine][default]

   \definetypeface[libertine][tt][mono] [bera] [default][rscale=0.85]
   \definetypeface[libertine][mm][math] [modern]   [default]
\stoptypescript

Instead of the one definition above you can also define the following
if you want to access the font by name Bera:

\starttypescript [mono] [bera]
\definefontsynonym [Bera] [file:fvmr8a.pfb]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript [mono] [bera] [name]
\definefontsynonym [Mono] [Bera]

The different widths of my sans is one thing I hadn't counted on using
much (I spend more time in serif) but, since I have the fonts, I
thought it would be nice to be able to use them. More than the
specific uses I've mentioned above, I'm used to the freedom of being
able to use what I have when the need arises.

The easiest way is to use different typeface for regular width and
condensed, e.g.

\definetypeface[myfont][...]

and

\definetypeface[myfontcd]

You can then switch between both with \myfont and \myfontcd.

 2. As far as I can tell from trying to decode examples, there is some
 hidden connection between the first arguments of the second typescript

 between SerifBoldItalic and \bi seems to connect Junicode-BoldItalic
 to \bi.  Fine, but, in all the examples I've seen, there are no more
 than two weights and no widths.  In some cases, I have five weights
 (light, book, medium, semi-bold, bold).  How do I set up the
 typescript for this and the switches in the text?  Must I learn more
 pairs like (SerifBoldItalic, \bi)?

Yes, but there are not many (tf, it, sl, bf, bi, bs, sc) and I assume
that they are extensible. See also below.

 You need more typefaces. One for light, another one for condensed etc.

 styles:

 Serif       - \rm
 Sans        - \ss
 Mono        - \tt
 Handwriting - \hw
 Calligraphy - \cg

 alternatives:

 --
 Italic      - \tf
 Slanted     - \sl
 Bold        - \bf
 BoldItalic  - \bi
 BoldSlanted - \bs
 Caps        - \sc

 combinations:

 SerifItalic - \rm\it, \rmit
 SansSlanted - \ss\sl, \sssl
 MonoBold    - \tt\bf, \ttbf

Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't it be possible (I didn't test) to
modify font-unk.mkiv and add a few extra definitions to the following?
(Maybe not modify font-unk itself, but just adding a couple of more
definitons to the typescript.)

\definebodyfont [default] [rm]
  [tf=Serif sa 1,
   bf=SerifBold sa 1,
   it=SerifItalic sa 1,
   sl=SerifSlanted sa 1,
   bi=SerifBoldItalic sa 1,
   bs=SerifBoldSlanted sa 1,
   sc=SerifCaps sa 1]

You could add your
  in=SerifYourFontVariantName sa 1,
  bd=SerifYourOtherFontVariantName sa 1,

And then
   \definefontsynonym[SerifYourFontVariantName][YourFontName]

It's true that most people don't do that, but I see no reason for not
extending the model for your particular needs.

definitons to the typescript.)

\definebodyfont [default] [rm]
   [tf=Serif sa 1,
bf=SerifBold sa 1,
it=SerifItalic sa 1,
sl=SerifSlanted sa 1,
bi=SerifBoldItalic sa 1,
bs=SerifBoldSlanted sa 1,
sc=SerifCaps sa 1]

You could add your
   in=SerifYourFontVariantName sa 1,
   bd=SerifYourOtherFontVariantName sa 1,

The last time i did this you needed for MkIV also

\definefontalternative[in]
\definefontalternative[bd]

but be carefull with the shortcuts, \in is already used (references).

And then
\definefontsynonym[SerifYourFontVariantName][YourFontName]

It's true that most people don't do that, but I see no reason for not
extending the model for your particular needs.

I know, but it's up to Michael to choose the names for his scheme.
It's not very wise to override existing comands anyway; and almost any
two-letter could could be taken for language switching. (\sl should
stand for Slovenian, though it has a lower priority than font
switching.)

If he decides not to use cross-references, it may even work (with zero
guarantee).

You loose the language shortcut but you're still able to change hyphenation
patterns with \language[...], that's not possible with references.

Yes.

I tried this and it checks out. Thanks---it's nice to see hz working.
Protrusion is only on the right margin?

Left and right but quotation marks do not appear so often on the left
margin.

(Also, I'm hoping that having a dozen different sets of font features won't
require twelve times as many switches and feature names as this. I think
there is some easier method for switching---Hans mentioned \addff{}, but
I can't find anything in the docs. If that works, that would make two kinds
of switches, one for some kinds of features and another for other kinds.)

\addff, \subff etc. are rather new commands and therefore only documented
in the source, you're free to add them to the wiki.

Re: [NTG-context] typescripts

2010-03-17 Thread Wolfgang Schuster

Hi Michael,

do you need all of your fonts at the same time in your document?

Do you plan to switch between oldstyle and lining figures each sentence?

Do you need condensed and regular width together in the running text
or do you want one in the text and the other in the header?

ConTeXt is not a DTP program and has a completely different concept.

Before we can give you better answers think about what do want
to achieve and where do you need a certain font feature and style,
when you have a clear picture about this ty to describe it and we
try to help you.

Hans has a nice ConTeXt magazine on installing system: mag-0009.pdf (u can
find it on the pragma site).

I made a lot of typescript for URW and Lino fonts.
If anyone is interested, I'll put them on my homepage
(not the fonts, only the typescripts).
BTW: I'll drop my ConTeXt cookbook project.
I've never enough time to care about it like it was needed.
Sorry and and big thanks to all who helped until now!
