Installing Peer Web Services

2001-09-03 Thread Robert Jackson

Hi All,

I've got a bit of a problem in that I cannot get the full Peer Web Services
add-on installed. My machine is running Windows NT4.0 Workstation with
Service Pack 6a and IE 5.5.

Every component within the PWS will install except the WWW Publishing
Service (which as Sod's Law dictates, is the portion I really need).

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so could you please let me
know?

TIA,
Rab.

Definitely Sircam worm. I should know about it. We
had a full on DDoS attack going on with this lovely little bugger attached.
Thousands of e-mails from different sources going to a recipient we don't have

  Only
difference: We got the attachments with the worm, and I am talking big

Ryan,

They
are correct. On an NT
workstation, when you select the password option on any built-in screen
saver, it will lock the workstation when you attempt to clear it. Youre thinking of W95 and W98
workstations, where it asks for a generic
password.

If
your workstation exhibits this behavior, then I would say that it is not an
NT workstation.

Hey
All,

Just wondering if
anyone knows of a screen saver or something that will lock a NT Workstation
if it isnt used for X minutes. We have a machine behind reception which is
used for DB Queries and everyone always leaves it loged in. Ive decided to
make it hard for them by having the workstation lock if they dont use it for
5 minutes. That way the next person to use it will have to track down the
previous user to unlock it. Im sure the annoyance will fix it REALLY
quick!!!
Any ideas how i
could achieve this, i dont want a screensaver password i want the

RE: installing NT

2001-09-03 Thread Erich Voigt

Hi!

We are GMT+2 so I am only now reading your conversation!

You don't need any fdisk. a blank disk is best place to start. Boot from CD
(or 3 stiffies) and it will self detect that nothing is set up.

It will then ask you to define partitions and when you play along, it will
give you the option to use the whole disk as the partition BUT (I think this
has changed but my server CD build 1381 I think) will allow a maximum of 2GB
as the first partition else you get that message you mentioned.

You can increase this partition later using Partition Magic or the like -
there might be other suggestions but I set up our drives as c=2 or 1.5(OS),
f=±50%of remainder for APPS and R:=the rest for Data unless the installation
requires different.

Then remember to do the sup pack (6a) before trying to do fancy NIC's and
Video drivers.

Good Luck

Erich

f=±50%of remainder for APPS and R:=the rest for Data unless the installation
requires different.

Then remember to do the sup pack (6a) before trying to do fancy NIC's and
Video drivers.

Good Luck

RE: installing NT

2001-09-03 Thread Richard McMahon

You need to add the dell drivers for the hard disk when booting off the cd
or nt boot disks. This will allow the NT setup to get arround the problem
and let you specify a larger boot disk. You should be OK installing onto a
2gig partition and then updating the NT hard disk drivers which will allow
you to see the remaineder of the disk. I had to do this on some of our
optiplex hardware.

Good luck

Hi guys,

This maybe little easy for some, but I am trying to install NT server
wkstation on a

W2k boot

2001-09-03 Thread Martijn Eindhoven

Hey Guys,
Maybe a weird question. I use Ts a lot for my servers and the servers are
in a colocation. So the servers dont have a monitor or keyboard
plugged in. Sometimes when i go to the colo i want to use this server but
when its not plugged with keyboard and monitor while (re)booting
i dont have screen and keyboard connection, so its necessary to give it
another swing. Is there an option for w2k server to dont have to do this
anymore.

RE: Adding new users via command line

2001-09-03 Thread Steve Roberts

Just a quick point with this one. Cusrmgr is for altering additional user
accounts and there doesn't seem to be any options for adding accounrs. I
suppose I'll just have to use net user as well, something like :

shell net user joeb password /domain
shell cusrmgr.exe -c $Usercomment -f $Username etc...

Maybe a weird question. I use Ts a lot for my servers and the servers are in a

its not plugged with keyboard and monitor while (re)booting
i dont have screen and keyboard connection, so its necessary to give it another
swing. Is there an option for w2k server to dont have to do this anymore.

always leaves it loged in. Ive decided to make it hard for them by having the

Any ideas how i could achieve this, i dont want a

Hello,

Firstly thanks for everyone ones help last
week with my web servers that where running slow then crashing due to memory
leaks

Well theyre still crashing although not as
much.

Today I did a port scan of the servers and
found two new ports 1025 (network blackjack) and 1027 (ICQ), now these
certainly shouldnt be on there.

1. Are these ports used by windows (havent
seen them b4) and have been miss interpreted as blackjack and ICQ (although I
checked a list of TCP ports and they are what they say they are)

2. Where do I start to try and get rid of
them

Here is what I do. Subscribe a Public Folder to this list. Name it

nomail option so that you can still send to the list, but you don't receive

RE: Proxy server - selective Web access

2001-09-03 Thread Ryan Gorman

According to http://proxyfaq.networkgods.com/addons.htm

http://erwin.richard.net/rbaproxy.htm

This is another must have for the proxy 2.0 administrator and believe it or
not... It's FREE! Another big flaw with proxy server is it's inability to
apply domain filters to different groups. Have you ever had a group of
users that you would like to restrict to a few web sites, but allow full
access to others? Or have you just wanted to be able to apply different
filters to a bunch of different groups? Well unfortunately, with Proxy 2.0
you can't do this.

You could buy an expensive 3rd party filter, but why when you have RBA
Proxy? or even if you have a 3rd party program you may find that RBA Proxy
extends and compliments features of your current filter.

RBAProxy is ISAPI filter and ISAPI extension, it rides on top of IIS3 or
IIS4 and allows you to restrict websites based on NT group membership to up
to 15 different domain filter lists which you can create. As of 1.0a filter
lists can also contain the * wildcard.

While it does not provide for a GUI interface, the configuration is done
through text files which are relatively simple and let's face it text files
make for simple administration :)

There was a free add-on written which did exactly what you require - permit
or deny URL access based on your usergroup. Someone wrote a IDAPI or
whatever add-on that was configurable via an INI file.

I can't remember the URL tho...

-Original Message-

SBS 4.5 SP6A, Exchange 5.5, Proxy 2 etc.

Manager of the area would like to restrict web access to certain sites or at
least require a password to get out to non-approved sites. The Proxy options
appear to only allow either a permit or deny access list common to all
domain users not selectable per user/group.

Is there a way around this or a 3rd party product that may help?. I have
looked at Surf Control but it is a bit expensive for what in theory seems a
straight forward requirement (I was surprised Proxy could not do it but I
may be looking in the wrong place!!).

Thanks very much in advance

Is there a way I can single out a user so that they will have only access to

RE: Adding new users via command line

2001-09-03 Thread Steve Roberts

My hastily written demo code may be grammitically incorrect but I think that
you get the gist of it.

I have looked at net help user. It contains 99% of the options that I need
but does not include an option for which drive to map to the home folder. I
could force a mapping in the login script but I would rather have it set
correctly in user manager.

That is why the demo code uses both the net command and the cusrmgr command.

Just a quick point with this one. Cusrmgr is for altering
additional user
accounts and there doesn't seem to be any options for adding
accounrs. I
suppose I'll just have to use net user as well, something like :

shell net user joeb password /domain
shell cusrmgr.exe -c $Usercomment -f $Username etc...

Also can I use any tools to automate the creation of
Exchange mailboxes as
well? I tried running the net user help command on a domain
controller that
has the Exchange User Manager extensions installed, it
doesn't have any
additional options though??

Every component within the PWS will install except the WWW Publishing

RE: TCP ports 1025 (blackjack) and 1027 (ICQ)

2001-09-03 Thread Correa, Andre

If this is Windows NT, I believe you might be able to go into the
Services file (%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\services) and in that file you
should see a listing or ports.
Scroll down to ports 1025 and 1027, and delete those lines from the file. In addition, if you administer the
firewall, you might want to block those ports as well.

Hello,

Firstly thanks for everyone ones help last week with my web servers
that where running slow then crashing due to memory leaks

Well theyre still crashing although not as much.

Today I did a port scan of the servers and found two new ports 1025
(network blackjack) and 1027 (ICQ), now these certainly shouldnt be on
there.

1. Are these ports used by windows (havent seen them b4) and have been
miss interpreted as blackjack and ICQ (although I checked a list of TCP ports
and they are what they say they are)

2. Where do I start to try and get rid of them

All,

Machine is Windows 2000 pro. Does anyone know a way to prevent Outlook
Express from automatically creating those silly icons on the start menu
and
quick launch bar every time a new profile is created? I tried
uninstalling
oe manually, but it turns out that some of its components are needed for
proper operation of Outlook 2000, which I need to function. I have also
tried copying a profile without the icons to the default user profile,
but
the icons still appear when a new profile is created. Any known ways to
stop
this?

small rant on

Why in heavens name has Microsoft installed so many useless programs by
default? Outlook Express is a good example. I ran into this while
installing
Professional, and figured that it may have some marginal value there.
But OE
also installs itself in 2000 Server! I really cant imagine any use for
the
OE client on a machine used as a server. Microsoft's flagship network
server
product should come with everything except truly essential operating
system
functions disabled by default-and then the user of the system could turn
on
features as desired.

rant off

Thanks in advance,
Sled

Subject: Adding Outlook 2000 Profiles

Hello!

This is the problem, we have an application here that requires 4 unique
mail profiles be setup under Outlook 2000 for each person that uses it.
And of course that person requires their own personal profile so they
can use email.

So basically we end up with every person needing the following profiles:

John Doe - their personal one, set to default
Profile1
Profile2
Profile3
Profile4

We've been using an outlook.prf file placed in the WINNT folder of a
Win2K Professional Ghost image when we deploy the machines. Software
installation of Office 2000 is via Group Policy. This way when a person
logs in their personal profile gets setup automatically. We then have
to manually add the other 4 profiles.

Inevitably, we end up forgetting 1 or more of the profiles and the
application misbehaves. I need to figure out some mechanism to have
those 4 profiles added when the person first logs in. I hope to build
this into the Ghost image so we can just forget about it. Is there
anyway to do this?

We're using Exchange 2000 in an AD domain.

Thanks.

Juan

Use Dameware. You can install the remote control software on a remote
machine. As soon as you try and connect to the remote machine, the service
will install itself.

Here is what I do. Subscribe a Public Folder to this

your account to
nomail option so that you can still send to the list, but you
don't receive

RE: Stopping services on remote server

2001-09-03 Thread Correa, Andre

If you have installed the Resource Kit, use Rconsole. It can be remotely
installed to Server2 from Server1. This might even be available from
Microsoft's website.

RConsole is a utility similar to Telnet, where in your command prompt, you
can connect remotely to the server, and any commands you run (stop/start
services, etc) will actually be run on that server.

I used it specifically for this issue you are describing. One of our remote
domain controllers had access to our network, but network traffic
originating from the central office could not contact that network. It
could connect to another server, that was dual nic into the network we could
not reach. I used SMS Remote control to connect to that server and then ran
Rconsole to the server I could not see, and voila!

You are MUCH better off subscribing a
Public Folder to this discussion list. Here is what I do. Subscribe a
Public Folder to this list. Name it whatever you want, just subscribe the
smtp address to this list. Set the options on that to receive the
mail. Change the settings on your account to nomail option so that you
can still send to the list, but you don't receive any mail in your
Inbox. Add the Public Folder to your Favorites under
  the
Public Folders list. You can then
even synchronize it if you wish. This way, you also have a
wonderful link to archives. I have it up to a year
  and
  a half ago.

Subject: Installing Peer Web Services

Hi All,

I've got a bit of a problem in that I cannot get the full Peer Web
Services add-on installed. My machine is running Windows NT4.0
Workstation with Service Pack 6a and IE 5.5.

Every component within the PWS will install except the WWW Publishing
Service (which as Sod's Law dictates, is the portion I really need).

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so could you please let me
know?

TIA,
Rab.

REPLICATION

2001-09-03 Thread Freeman, Caine
Title: REPLICATION

Hi All,
I am using ROBOCOPY on NT 4.0 Servers to perform replication across 3 domains.
This way of repllicating doesnt remove files at the destination. So if we delete a file at the source we have to manual delete it from the destination.

Does anybody know away to replicate this thoughly without using NT Replication?

Thanks Caine
