Installing Peer Web Services
Hi All, I've got a bit of a problem in that I cannot get the full Peer Web Services add-on installed. My machine is running Windows NT4.0 Workstation with Service Pack 6a and IE 5.5. Every component within the PWS will install except the WWW Publishing Service (which as Sod's Law dictates, is the portion I really need). Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so could you please let me know? Hi! We are GMT+2 so I am only now reading your conversation! You don't need any fdisk. a blank disk is best place to start. Boot from CD (or 3 stiffies) and it will self detect that nothing is set up. It will then ask you to define partitions and when you play along, it will give you the option to use the whole disk as the partition BUT (I think this has changed but my server CD build 1381 I think) will allow a maximum of 2GB as the first partition else you get that message you mentioned. You can increase this partition later using Partition Magic or the like - there might be other suggestions but I set up our drives as c=2 or 1.5(OS), f=±50%of remainder for APPS and R:=the rest for Data unless the installation requires different. RE: installing NT
You need to add the dell drivers for the hard disk when booting off the cd or nt boot disks. This will allow the NT setup to get arround the problem and let you specify a larger boot disk. You should be OK installing onto a 2gig partition and then updating the NT hard disk drivers which will allow you to see the remaineder of the disk. I had to do this on some of our optiplex hardware. RE: Adding new users via command line
Just a quick point with this one. Cusrmgr is for altering additional user accounts and there doesn't seem to be any options for adding accounrs. I suppose I'll just have to use net user as well, something like : shell net user joeb password /domain shell cusrmgr.exe -c $Usercomment -f $Username etc... Also can I use any tools to automate the creation of Exchange mailboxes as well? I tried running the net user help command on a domain controller that has the Exchange User Manager extensions installed, it doesn't have any additional options though?? TCP ports 1025 (blackjack) and 1027 (ICQ)
Hello, Firstly thanks for everyone ones help last week with my web servers that where running slow then crashing due to memory leaks Well theyre still crashing although not as much. Today I did a port scan of the servers and found two new ports 1025 (network blackjack) and 1027 (ICQ), now these certainly shouldnt be on there. 1. Are these ports used by windows (havent seen them b4) and have been miss interpreted as blackjack and ICQ (although I checked a list of TCP ports and they are what they say they are) 2. Where do I start to try and get rid of them thanks Paul Paul Broomfield, Network Administrator and Database Technician Tell Communications Tamar Science Park Derriford Plymouth Devon PL6 8BX Tel: +44 (0) 1752 764242 Fax: +44 (0) 1752 764243 Visit us on the web at: http://www.tell-com.com/ http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

You are MUCH better off subscribing a Public Folder to this discussion list. Here is what I do. Subscribe a Public Folder to this list. Name it whatever you want, just subscribe the smtp address to this list. Set the options on that to receive the mail. Change the settings on your account to nomail option so that you can still send to the list, but you don't receive any mail in your Inbox. Add the Public Folder to your Favorites under the Public Folders list. You can then even synchronize it if you wish. This way, you also have a wonderful link to archives. I have it up to a year and a half ago. RE: Proxy server - selective Web access
According to http://proxyfaq.networkgods.com/addons.htm http://erwin.richard.net/rbaproxy.htm This is another must have for the proxy 2.0 administrator and believe it or not... It's FREE! Another big flaw with proxy server is it's inability to apply domain filters to different groups. Have you ever had a group of users that you would like to restrict to a few web sites, but allow full access to others? Or have you just wanted to be able to apply different filters to a bunch of different groups? Well unfortunately, with Proxy 2.0 you can't do this. You could buy an expensive 3rd party filter, but why when you have RBA Proxy? or even if you have a 3rd party program you may find that RBA Proxy extends and compliments features of your current filter. RBAProxy is ISAPI filter and ISAPI extension, it rides on top of IIS3 or IIS4 and allows you to restrict websites based on NT group membership to up to 15 different domain filter lists which you can create. As of 1.0a filter lists can also contain the * wildcard. While it does not provide for a GUI interface, the configuration is done through text files which are relatively simple and let's face it text files make for simple administration :) -Original Message- From: Andrew Frost [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2001 12:09 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Proxy server - selective Web access Thanks Ryan! If this is Windows NT, I believe you might be able to go into the Services file (%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\services) and in that file you should see a listing or ports. RE: Adding Outlook 2000 Profiles
No answers for this? I'm sure its got to be possible. Someone must have run into this problem before? Anyone? Thanks. -Original Message- From: Mier, Juan Sent: Friday, August 31, 2001 3:51 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Adding Outlook 2000 Profiles Hello! This is the problem, we have an application here that requires 4 unique mail profiles be setup under Outlook 2000 for each person that uses it. And of course that person requires their own personal profile so they can use email. So basically we end up with every person needing the following profiles: John Doe - their personal one, set to default Profile1 Profile2 Profile3 Profile4 We've been using an outlook.prf file placed in the WINNT folder of a Win2K Professional Ghost image when we deploy the machines. Software installation of Office 2000 is via Group Policy. This way when a person logs in their personal profile gets setup automatically. We then have to manually add the other 4 profiles. Inevitably, we end up forgetting 1 or more of the profiles and the application misbehaves. I need to figure out some mechanism to have those 4 profiles added when the person first logs in. I hope to build this into the Ghost image so we can just forget about it. Is there anyway to do this? We're using Exchange 2000 in an AD domain. Thanks. Stopping services on remote server
I am presently sitting in front of a VNC window, controlling a remote server (SERVER1) some 1000 miles away. In the same domain as SERVER1, there is another server (SERVER2) I need to stop the DNS service on SERVER2 (SERVER2, unfortunately does not have VNC loaded) These servers are configured as standalone as opposed to PDC, BDC, etc. I have all the passwords available to access SERVER2 but cannot for the life of me, control the services on SERVER2. I have been through all the NET HELP commands without success. NT4/SP6a configuration on both. Any suggestions? Peter van Houten Peaceland http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

RE: Stopping services on remote server
If you have installed the Resource Kit, use Rconsole. It can be remotely installed to Server2 from Server1. This might even be available from Microsoft's website. RConsole is a utility similar to Telnet, where in your command prompt, you can connect remotely to the server, and any commands you run (stop/start services, etc) will actually be run on that server. I used it specifically for this issue you are describing. One of our remote domain controllers had access to our network, but network traffic originating from the central office could not contact that network. It could connect to another server, that was dual nic into the network we could not reach. I used SMS Remote control to connect to that server and then ran Rconsole to the server I could not see, and voila! Wrong on both scores. I have offered to help out a company who's sysadmin was badly injured in a motor car accident on Saturday night. I was given the passwords by the financial manager at the site on the other side of South Africa and thanks to positive input by Andrew and others I have managed to fix the problem.
