script to Backup NTFS Permissions

2008-04-26 Thread mck1012
I am looking for a script to backup all NTFS permissions for a drive. I would
like to script this so we can back them up and then be able to restore the
permissions on another server in the same domain. I am doing this for DR so I
can not just copy the files over using xcopy or robocopy. I know the backup
software should restore the permissions but we have ran into some problems were
some restores do not bring the NTFS permissions back. I am hoping to use xcalcs
to do this but want to hear some other options or examples people have.

Thanks

Re: Scanner in RDP session

2008-04-26 Thread Jon Harris
I have not seen that on any newer models of the HP scanners. I can only say
that I saw that software on the SCSI attached HP's from many years back. I
would think doing the remote share with an USB attached scanner would be
very difficult to do. If I was looking for this type of functionality I
would look at some of the SCSI or higher end USB models. All that said the
last time I even saw that software offered with a scanner was when there
were still a lot of Windows 98 systems in the market/hands of clients. I
don't remember seeing it since that time period but then I have not been
looking either.

You mean have the scanner attached to a computer (RemoteComputer), RDP
into RemoteComputer from LocalComputer and scan? If so, yes. I've not
used a document scanner but I did hook up my HP Scanjet G4050 to an old
laptop and put it out of the way so I wouldn't have to listen to it or
tie up my computer as it scanned in lots of negatives. I'm unsure of
the client version though. I use VisionApp for all my RDP needs. Also,
the scanner was attached to a Windows XP Pro machine, not a server OS of
  any kind.

No, that won't help you. MAPI/CDO have nothing to do with WMI.

Really, the easiest way to do this is to use dsquery or adfind. This is what
I recommend to the OP.

Google for fileacl.exe - it autogenerates scripts for itself as
output, and I use it for exactly the purpose you have in mind.

backup software should restore the permissions but we have ran into some
problems were some restores do not bring the NTFS permissions back. I am
hoping to use xcalcs to do this but want to hear some other options or
 examples people have.

You made me think on a Saturday! Shame on you!

No, that won’t help you. MAPI/CDO have nothing to do with WMI.

Really, the easiest way to do this is to use dsquery or adfind. This is what I
recommend to the OP.

To wit:

C:\Tempadfind -config -f objectcategory=msexchexchangeserver dn serialnumber

Doesn't this make it possible to use the same script against Exchange 2007?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e17e7f31-079a-43a9-bff2-0a110307611edisplaylang=en

Granted, you'll have to identify all the 2007 servers and add this to them, but
I guess the ones which don't respond to the CDOEXM scripting will take care of
that.

Hmm, Exchange question. Does Sunbelt operate an Exchange list?

Should be able to distill something here into what you need:

Microsoft publishes the following manual method for determining the version

of Exchange: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/152439

Is there a programmatic way to capture this information so I can run it

against 200 Exchange servers?

What's wrong with FTP? File Transfer Protocol. Kinda the point. :)

If security matters, I use SFTP. If I want sophisticated
synchronization, I use rsync. If both, rsync over SSH.

2008-04-26 Thread Michael B. Smith
Yes, there is an A/D provider in V2, and it’s pretty nice.

There is also a (free) A/D provider from Quest, and free A/D cmdlets available
as part of PSCX (PowerShell Community Extensions).

It’s covered, but I can’t assume that everyone has those installed. J

Is this something that will be addressed in V2 (if it's even worth it) , just
curious.

I can do it in PS, but because there is no A/D provider in PS 1.0, I have to
use System.DirectoryServices() in order to do the query. That makes it several
lines longer, of slightly confusing code (or one really long line of REALLY
confusing code).

question about moving exchange 03 store to iSCSI

2008-04-26 Thread Neil Standley
I've read a few articles that say all I need to do is enable persistence
for the connections and move the data files via system manager. But I'm
expecting that when Exchange restarts, if the iscsi initiator hasn't
started yet Exchange won't be able to connect to the database. So what
services do I need to set dependencies on to avoid this problem, or am I
not correct in my assumption?

Using Windows server 2003 R2 SP2 with Exchange 03 SP2

Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.06

Thanks in advance!
