RE: Windows 3.11 EOL Soon, Plan Accordingly ;)

2008-07-10 Thread Barsodi.John
Ya ya, I totally went in a different direction, I was throwing out a
song title from my favorite 90's grudge band that reminded me of the
'EOL' of an old Microsoft product and the lyrics from what Michael
posted. Sry for the confusion. Thankfully it's 12 minutes to 5.

I'm not sure if you were alluding to that or not, but obviously if you can,
that would be a huge advantage.
Also, FC rocks, but don't think that ISCSI can't handle your enterprise

SATA is also starting to gain a foothold there as well. I'm still not 100%

You may want to sacrifice some older hardware and get a virtual

The folks at Camtasia are really responsive. At least they have been to me.
Email them and tell them what you are trying to do.

Multicast will allow for pausing/ff/rew, but you have to have in enabled on
your switches etc for it to work.

If anyone knows of a good forum/list for this I would be grateful to know.

I have Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 32bit and am using Windows Media
Encoder to record audio and video content from a capture card. This is
content is being recorded to the hard drive and not pushed to Windows Media
Services. Then I have an On Demand WMS publishing point set up to use the
recorded file as a source. As far as I can tell, this is how you must
proceed if you want to use the pause/FF/RW feature of WMP. I can connect
from other computers using WMP and view the content.

My problem is, I can't pause the content if the recording is still in
progress. I only have stop as an option and if I do that I must start over.
If I stop the encoder and reconnect from one of the clients, I can pause and
fast forward. I'm recording a live meeting which is simulcasted to our
location. In case we start a few minutes late, I want to be able to pause
the player at the beginning and resume when ready.

I'm I doing this wrong?

I meant to add: In the meantime, I would discontinue using them for
DNS. Do it yourself or use OpenDNS. OpenDNS was never vulnerable to
this attack vector:

   http://blog.opendns.com/2008/07/08/opendns-keeping-you-safe/

But, remember that this effects clients too.

One of Boston.com's pop-up advertisers is currently redirecting to a

impeccable - and is exactly what I have been expecting to see.

I enabled ESX lockdown mode which locks out the access for root and you
can only access from virtual center or additional user names.

Well.. i set the lockdown mode before doing any of those so now I am

Anyone know how to reset of reformat vmware esxi? It is on a dell2950

RE: Locked out of VMWARE esx lockdown mode

When I click F2, it asks for my credentials. That's when my root

I think this assumes that I have created additional accounts besides
root.

I think i screwed myself big time.

I enabled ESX lockdown mode which locks out the access for root
and you can only access from virtual center or additional user names.

Well.. i set the lockdown mode before doing any of those so now
I am locked out.

Anyone know how to reset of reformat vmware esxi? It is on a
dell2950 with embedded hypervisor.

WU client fails when searching for updates

2008-07-10 Thread Carl Houseman
I've written a script which is trimmed down to the following for purpose of
discussion:

On error resume next

Set updateSession = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.Session")

If err.number = 0 Then

  Set updateSearcher = updateSession.CreateupdateSearcher()

  If err.number = 0 Then

  Set searchResult = updateSearcher.Search("IsInstalled=0 and
Type='Software'")

If err.number <> 0 Then

 wscript.echo "Error searching for updates: " & err.number

 wscript.echo "Description: " & err.description

 wscript.quit(1)

   End If

  End If

End If

(Never mind the "else" code for the failure of the first two setup
statements - the updateSearcher.Search is the one with the problem.)

Occasionally, the result is:

Error searching for updates: -2147012894

Description:

This has happened between clients and a WSUS 2 server and between clients
that have no WSUS server defined (i.e. to the MS WU servers).

I've requested the windowsupdate.log file to scrutinize but so far it hasn't
been provided.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen or solved a similar problem.
Normally I would just call this "can't communicate with a WU server" but
it's happened in situations where the WSUS server was very clearly available
and responding. Usually a second attempt at the same code will succeed.

thanks,

Carl

under 10 bucks, has 40 original 2600 games on it, and I hear you can hack it

has db9 connectors and is compatible with the original controllers. What a

2008-07-10 Thread Andy Ognenoff
Did you read the blog article?

FTA:

"During Dan’s testing he confirmed (and we later confirmed) that our DNS
implementation is not susceptible to the attack that was discovered. In
other words, if you used OpenDNS then you were already protected long before
this attack was even discovered.

In fact, for those of you who were listening in on the Microsoft press call
this morning, you’ll note that OpenDNS was suggested as the easy and simple
solution for anyone who can’t upgrade their DNS infrastructure today."

They said they'll follow up with details why that is the case.

Thank you, thank you one and all those were the last 2 pieces of the

not be changing either the forest or domain levels until the other side of

RE: Adding a 2008 DC to a 2003 domain

2008-07-10 Thread Troy Meyer
Jon,

Remember what adprep is doing, after some basic checks its main purpose is to
extend the schema so that objects used by 2008 exist in the AD (its adding
stuff, but shouldn't modify what you already have). That being said, we
haven't made this step in production yet, but prep for W2K3 R2 had no effect
whatsoever on our trusts.

Second on the exchange side, running adprep should not 'remove' any objects
that are related to exchange so you should be just fine with that as well. The
big deal issues that occur with running adprep is when you have custom schema
extension from 3rd party vendors that may or may not conflict with the new
objects Microsoft is trying to add.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Major DNS protocol issue effecting most implementations of DNS

2008-07-10 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
I meant to add: In the meantime, I would discontinue using them for
DNS. Do it yourself or use OpenDNS. OpenDNS was never vulnerable to
this attack vector:

   http://blog.opendns.com/2008/07/08/opendns-keeping-you-safe/

But, remember that this effects clients too.

Adding a 2008 DC to a 2003 domain

Cannot access/configure VPN server as domain admin

2008-07-10 Thread Neil Womack
My VPN server (Win2k Server, single AD domain) is not responding to outside
connection attempts. I check
Routing and Remote Access on the server (logged in as domain admin) and it
shows the service as started.
However, I cannot change or stop the service, as every time I try I get an
Error 5: Access is Denied message.

If I go into Routing and Remote Access under Administrative Tools, my server is
listed with a red stop sign icon. Again, trying to view or change anything
results in Access Denied. It asks for credentials, I enter the domain
administrator account credentials and it says I don't have sufficient
privileges to view the properties or change the service.

If I try to log in with my own user account (which is in the Domain Admins
group) I get the error "The credentials you supplied conflict with an existing
set of credentials."

I cleared the event viewer and tried again but nothing shows up in the logs.
Any ideas what may be going on here? Seems that this stopped working when we
had an unexpected server reboot after a prolonged power outage in the middle of
the night on a weekend. Server seems fine otherwise, no disruption to any other
server roles or services.

RE: Lotus Notes to Exchange conversion

2008-07-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
Really, I think the (free) Transporter suite works just fine for
email/calendar/contacts. But it is a product that requires you to pay
attention.

There is nothing equivalent to iNotes templates in Exchange. You'll need to
do custom development in SharePoint to make that happen.

I have no experience with the Sunbelt Email Archiver, but our host here
provides that and it is worth a look. Personally, I prefer to combine my
e-mail archival along with my DR and backup - that gives you solutions like
AppAssure and NearPoint from Mimosa. (ObDisclaimer: both of those companies
have tried to hire me, but I said 'no'.)

The Notes databases - those are the PROBLEM. Exchange doesn't have a good
solution if those are applications. You are going to have to evaluate pretty
much every single one of them individually to decide what to do. That is
where tools like the one from Quest come into play. They can help simplify
the effort involved in the migration of applications.

You can look at vendors like Quest, CompuSven, Casahl - all have different
solutions at different price points. That is - different pain points. :-)

Have 6 Notes /Domino servers. We will be migrating to Clustered Exchange

email archive solution too.
Any suggestions?

Why Shookie, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me! :-)

To the OP: Ken gave you a great answer. If I were going in as a consultant
for this type of engagement, the first thing I would do would be to survey
the existing Notes environment - how many servers, what capabilities of
Notes are being used, how much workflow is being used, whether iNotes is in
use, etc. etc.

Then, you crunch the numbers and decide what pain level you are willing to
absorb. ;-)

In this case, pain includes the dollars to spend on automation, the dollars
to spend on SharePoint development, user training, etc. etc.

Now, if your company has 10 people, that's a really different discussion
than if your company has 1,000 people or 10,000 people.

2008-07-10 Thread Tim Vander Kooi
As far as I am aware yes, except for having them connect to the wmv file after
the live feed is done. If your switch isn't managed then it may very well let
multicasting through by default.
The "problem" is the basic premise of unicast vs. multicast. Multicast has
multiple streams, as the name implies, so you get your own "personal" stream
when you fire it up which you can now control (pause/ff/rewind). Unicast has
one stream which everyone jumps on together, so no one user gets to control it.
In essence, if you jump off the train you have to run back to the station and
catch the next one. Unicast takes up considerably less bandwidth which is why
most managed switches/routers do not allow multicasting by default.

Tim

Multicast will allow for pausing/ff/rew, but you have to have in enabled on
your switches etc for it to work.

If anyone knows of a good forum/list for this I would be grateful to know.

I have Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 32bit and am using Windows Media
Encoder to record audio and video content from a capture card. This is content
is being recorded to the hard drive and not pushed to Windows Media Services.
Then I have an On Demand WMS publishing point set up to use the recorded file
as a source. As far as I can tell, this is how you must proceed if you want to
use the pause/FF/RW feature of WMP. I can connect from other computers using
WMP and view the content.

My problem is, I can't pause the content if the recording is still in progress.
I only have stop as an option and if I do that I must start over. If I stop the
encoder and reconnect from one of the clients, I can pause and fast forward.
I'm recording a live meeting which is simulcasted to our location. In case we
start a few minutes late, I want to be able to pause the player at the
beginning and resume when ready.

I'm I doing this wrong?

Why Shookie, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me! :-)

To the OP: Ken gave you a great answer. If I were going in as a
consultant
for this type of engagement, the first thing I would do would be to
survey
the existing Notes environment - how many servers, what capabilities of
Notes are being used, how much workflow is being used, whether iNotes is
in
use, etc. etc.

Then, you crunch the numbers and decide what pain level you are willing
to
absorb. ;-)

In this case, pain includes the dollars to spend on automation, the
dollars
to spend on SharePoint development, user training, etc. etc.

Now, if your company has 10 people, that's a really different discussion
than if your company has 1,000 people or 10,000 people.

RE: Major DNS protocol issue effecting most implementations of DNS

2008-07-10 Thread Joe Heaton
Well, I used the tool that was referenced on the site below, and it
seems my upstream name server is susceptible to this problem, so
hopefully they will be patching too. I have already patched my DNS
server, and I'm working on the client side patch now...

And what if the cache of your upstream is a victim of this attack? :-)

So, yes, internally you probably don't have much to fear (unless you
have a malicious employee, or someone else has already come in via some
other means and this is a second part of an attack). But you either need
to refer back to root servers or upstream DNS servers for other zones,
and it's possible that they might be compromised (well, probably not the
root servers)

Cheers

Depends what you're migrating (Mail, Apps)

Depends on the complexity of what you're migrating

Depends on how much you want OOB and how much elbow grease you want to put
in yourself.

Microsoft has free tool (dunno if it's only available for partners, but
it's free to sign up as a partner). Quest has a good paid-for tool. We
(Avanade) have a much more sophisticated multi-threaded tool that runs
alongside the Quest tool. And so on.

All depends on what you want to do, and how quickly you want to do it. :-)

RE: User Login

2008-07-10 Thread Ken Schaefer
No - we have around 7000 users internally, and several hundred thousand users
we are working with worldwide.

I would suggest that you employ the normal troubleshooting tools to determine
what is the root cause of the issue (e.g. tests around network connectivity,
name resolution for DCs, corrupt profiles, errors in Event Log etc). You don't
even give us the actual error message that is being presented - so it makes it
a bit hard to speculate on what the problem might be.

Also, what is "Windows Live Update"? Windows Update perhaps, but if you are
updating Microsoft Live components, I don't see why that would affect AD login.

Cheers
Ken

I had the same problem a number of months back.
Turned out to be bad metadata on the disk and controller for the raid set. I
wound up ghosting the partitions to images, deleting the raid set,

Yeah that would be a major pain. Since this is HP hardware have you looked

RE: Raid restore help advice????

2008-07-10 Thread george rovithis

controller looks to be ok, at least that what all the software is telling us,
but then again it did not tell us that the hard drive was dying or about the 1
dead hard drive.

Unfortunatly i am in greece and computer is in england.

Before I got SCOM (which I couldn't do without now) I had mixed success with
solutions using things such as dumpel.exe and EventSave. Primarily these
were used for archiving rather than perusing, although they could be viewed
through Event Viewer as they were saved in native format

SAS70: how to collect EventLog entries

2008-07-10 Thread Buchenauer Christian
Hi List

We need to get our network SAS70 compliant and are looking for a solution to
collect our EventLog entries. There are two data centers with about 50 W2K3
Servers in each location.
A Google Search returns mostly PR stuff about Event log monitoring tools so I
would like to ask you guys and girls about how you did it. We have no MOM/SCE
yet but use Nagios and SysLog to collect/display some information.

Any pointers to some guides or do's and dont's would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Antigen also. If you're running Ex 2003 you need to purchase MS Forefront then

Just curious what others use for AV on exchange.
We just have one exchange server and we use Postini for spam, but we were
thinking
about possibly adding something to the exchange server for possible threats
from Webmail and/or Mobile Phones.

Is this a real possible threat to the exchange server?
I know there won’t be just one answer, but what are some products you all use?

Thanks

7zip And GPO's

Is there a GPO available that would allow the lockdown of 7zip Manager

anyone knows about?

We allow users within a T/Services environment access to the 7zip

7zip
Manager allows the users to see more than we want them to.

Re: DNS flaw plugged by vendors

2008-07-10 Thread Jon Harris
I would think if you get it done before the Black Hat meeting where the
researcher is going to make public the details you should be fine. In one
article it was mentioned that it was expected that several attempts to use
this vulnerability would be made within a week of those details being made
public. I don't know if that is true or not but there are enough examples
of people using details of or reverse engineering of patches to make
worm/Trojans/viruses that use the patched vulnerability to make that
statement plausible.

I found Symantec AV caused this issue with the full suite installed. I moved
to "only antivirus and antispyware" and that killed it off. Maybe worth a
look if you use SAV, if you don't, try using procmon to see what processes
are "hanging on"

Re: DNS flaw plugged by vendors

2008-07-10 Thread James Rankin
I was wondering whether this was the sort of vulnerability that needed a
patch pushing through outside of the normal cycle, but having reviewed it as
much as possible I don't think it is. I think all the hype is centred around
the fact that it is a vulnerability affecting multiple implementations from
different providers, but that makes it more of an interesting anomaly than
anything else. We will be updating our DNS in the usual cycle.
